“AKASAKA. WOW. I was on set and got hungry so me & G3 went to the sushi joint that’s literally tucked away and VERY IYKYK (if you know, you know). All I gotta say is that the Yellowtail Cut Roll got me dancing. The hospitality was great, we were given Iced Green Teas on the house because we were waiting for our to go orders. “Great local sushi spot with stone decent pricing!

Seating is very limited and the menu gives off a bit of a dated feel but you really can't argue the classics when they're done well.

Sushi rice had just a bit of tang and was light and fluffy.

Dishes were presented very well and our server was thoughtful and cautious enough to make sure our table wasn't overflowing. We ordered about 6 items and by the 3rd plate things were crowding up.

Blue crab avocado roll ($9) - A little heavy on the Japanese mayo and rice but it made for a great presentation on the plate it was on.

Tempura mixed ($9) - 3 pieces of shrimp and 3 pieces of veggies. I'm on the fence with this one since I really enjoyed the presentation but felt like the batter on the shrimp was heavy and the veggies were mostly extra starchy items.

Mini spicy tuna bowl ($9) - This was a pleasant favorite! Just the right amount of heat and a decent amount of tuna over that delicious sushi rice. The first couple of bites where the cold tuna contradicts the warm rice was like being able to eat that feeling of walking on the warm sand and letting the chilly ocean water cool you off.

Amberjack/Hamachi Tuna ($5/piece) - This was interestingly a lighter flavor than what we were familiar with. The cut was thin but blanketed the rice with just a small swipe of sauce and a dab of yuzu paste on top. Playing perfectly well with the tangy rice but also all being a star of the bite while being clean.

Grilled Tuna Belly ($12) - This was the star of the table. Lightly grilled with a bit of crispy edges, seasoned and topped with garlic and micro greens and paired with a dipping sauce on the side to choose how heavy or light you prefer to dip.

Tempura Ice cream ($7) - Couldn't leave our first visit without trying a dessert item. Classic fried ice cream that is wrapped with pound cake and rolled in their delicious tempura batter. Saving room for this is a must if you grew up demolishing these in the early 2000s.

Hidden gems are great to find and it feels like this place has a lot of classics that give you a homey feel where you don't know where to start. Just dive in and make sure you mark off the ones you've tried because there are a good amount of dishes that were of value and quality here.

I’m not usually a raw halibut fan, but this was incredible and my favorite dish of the meal! “I came here to check out their breakfast and let me tell you I was impressed. They had this toast with avocado, onions and tomatoes 10 out of 10 I even tried their breakfast udon and the broth was so delicious. I even got into their onigiri and I tried their California their crunch the tuna and the salmon, and they were all so flavorful. But their yogurt Matcha was my favorite as well as their torch spam musubi so so good definitely you’re gonna wanna come check out for their breakfast. It is such a cute little mom and pop shop. “We get lunch or dinner at Maruichi AT LEAST twice a week! The karaage and different types of musubi are really, really good. They sometimes run out of the karaage, so that tells you how much people like it. The karaage is marinated well and cooked perfectly. It's a bummer when they run out of the karaage because the options around just can't compare. Give them around 30 minutes to fry the chicken because it's made to order. You won't be disappointed... Speaking of which, I'm going to order some now. For the musubi, I highly recommend the tuna and kurobota (sausage) -- the sausage musubi comes with the perfect amount of wasabi. This place is an absolute gem.“

“Roll & Teriyaki is a good local spot for delicious, fast-casual Japanese food at affordable prices. The quiet and clean dining area will accommodate small groups or solo diners.

The menu boasts Japanese favorites that most people will be familiar with. The value-packed combos are a real treat. I've also enjoyed the chicken and beef teriyaki bowls, as well as the sushi and roll offerings. While they may not offer as many fish varieties as other places, the ones they do have are all fresh and satisfying.

For a small, mom-and-pop restaurant, I'm glad there's a place like this close to home and affordable. The service is good. I've visited many times and the owner is a man of few words. The other staff have been nice as well.

The house salad was healthy (not just iceberg lettuce) and had a generous portion for one person. My friend said it was super delicious - Sunset roll, blue crab roll, and miso black cod were on point flavor wise. Super decadent, generous with the sauce (you can request a small scoop of rice for free afterwards to finish off the sauce), great noodle texture, amazing taste!! The first bite was heaven.

“This place did not appear automatically on Google Maps and we just saw it in the area. But so glad we did! Got the donkatsu (Donkkaseu) combo with soba. Portions were pleasantly larger than expected and we felt contently full afterwards. The katsu was fried perfectly and had a nice crunch! The donkatsu had lots of meat, and there were also side dishes that came with the meal!

“I decided to order some Tonkatsu from Ginkgo Katsu, on a food delivery app based on the good reviews. Thankfully the reviews were on-point this time! The Katsu arrived in this kind of fancy, big box with the meal in different sections - the Tonkatsu, rice, cabbage salad, Katsu sauce; then separately was the curry sauce (I ordered extra), pickled veggies, dressing. “Saw a picture of the Yakisoba Katsu sandwich and I had to have one! It was awesome! The Katsu was crispy and the meat tender. In short it was perfect! (not dry at all!) the yakisoba noodles was a nice addition as it absorbed the tonkatsu sauce and the cole slaw dressing! I also loved the brioche bread! A perfect touch. The tempura was good, sauce was great too. Katsu was fried perfectly, sauce was tangy and fantastic, just wish the pork was more moist/tender. Karaage was just okay, probably wouldn’t order it again, most of the flavor came from the sauce. My dad loved his eel bowl set, flavored and cooked well. My katsudon bowl was delicious, again katsu was a little dry, togarashi is a must with this bowl. And the cold soba noodles were great, the sauce dip was perfectly seasoned and noodles were perfect texture, very refreshing to eat.

“Have been coming to Sushi & Roll for a couple of months. My son and i love the sashimi, Sapporo, and rainbow rolls. My wife and sister enjoy the gyoza, baked salmon, and chiken karagi. There services is real good and attentive. Great family restaurant. I have only eaten here but see that they get a lot of phone orders togo. Highly recommended coming here“

“I used to come here regularly and my first visit was back in 2001. The food and service has always been great. Mimi had quite the personality and perhaps some might've thought she was rude but I loved the character that she added. I'm not sure if she's still there but I know today I saw Yohan who has always been the most lovely pleasant server ever. I've heard some people tell me that it isn't the same and it has fallen down hill but today I went in with my father and I still enjoyed the atmosphere and the service. These are the THE BEST California rolls I've ever had. You can't beat the price on the quality of these rolls. Thank you for still making food I enjoy.“

“This place is GREAT! Not OK, not good… GREAT! I’ve been to all the teriyaki spots up and down Whittier Blvd, and you simply aren’t going to get a better deal than this. Very fair prices for very large portions, but which always means very happy customers.

Customer service is excellent, they have a soda fountain with Coke products (and cans for other brands), a few tables inside so good for a quick lunch/dinner or takeout.

This place is an absolute no-brainer for simple, great Japanese food. If you’ve never been, you need to come, and if you have been, you need to come back. Skip the Flame Broiler’s and Panda Expresses and be happy that you came here instead.“

“I ordered a vegetable tempura bowl, which was extremely generous! The pieces of vegetables were huge. It was pretty heavy with the grease and that’s what ultimately removed a star from my review. I also ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl. I asked to add vegetables and learned that it’s not an additional price because they do it by weight. I eat Flame Broiler regularly and this is similar. The sauce at this restaurant is much lighter and the chicken is probably not as intense in flavor, but the bowl is very good. I would order it again. They have a little table with condiments and they offer the ginger which is yummy but it is the pink dyed ginger, which is unfortunate. It’s very tasty, however. They seem to do a good business with a ready supply of people wandering in to enjoy their food. The young man behind the register was very helpful and patient. They have various specials and that seems to be a good deal if you wanna take advantage of a daily special or a combination. I think the price is a reasonable, which is nice these days.“

“I had came here for some to go terriyaki chicken before but this time was the first time eating at the restaurant.

It’s a cute little Japanese restaurant with a variety of options from rolls, sushi, warm plates/bento boxes.
I have definitely not explored a lot, but what we got was great.

We tried chicken gyozas, which were okay. We also tried the shrimp eggroll recommended by the owner as she told us the filling was made in house, which was good!
For the plates, I got the sesame chicken as I wanted to change from terriyaki. It was really good. Filling with the rice and salad. The miso soup was actually really good!

Overall, it was a great experience. We got to talk a lot with the owner, and I learned a bit more about that place that has been around for 20 years!
So, my only advice is: support your local smaller businesses. They need it and you get to enjoy nice food!“
