“I definitely like the way this place has been redone. By the new management. I enjoy the sub sandwich specials. Chicken caesar salad is really good on a late night. Very chill atmosphere. It's cool to have the option to watch TV here too. If you wanna catch a game and eat something: Good combination.“

“Lovely place- would come back and recommend! Good spot to read or work with plenty of outlets, free wifi, open bathroom, and table space upstairs and downstairs. I got the cheese/green onion scone and a warm date latte and enjoyed both. Service was great and atmosphere was calm & relaxing. Came in on a Tuesday from 12:45-2:45pm and was very quiet and not very busy. I essentially had the whole upstairs table to myself for a couple hours.
Note: it seems like oatmilk substitute costs an extra 75 cents.“

“Wonderful healthy vibrant food that is well presented…especially for takeout. 🩷. The person that took my order was super friendly and efficient. The food came out quickly! Loved the lemony green juice and organic chicken. The tahini cookies are giant and tasty but would be slightly better with a bit more salt in the dough or a bit of flake salt on the top. Also tasted my friend’s soup, and it was super yummy 😋 too! Note, this is a takeaway place with a few outdoor tables. Other than wanting more salt in my cookie, I loved everything.“

“Found them on DoorDash, but ended up ordering from the website. I was pleasantly surprised with how much food I got, that everything was accurate and yummy. For those like me who don’t know, this is an area where you don’t interact with humans but I had no problem. The service via text was nice so I knew that I could reach out to someone if needed. I will say it took longer than expected, but it’s not fast food so it was fine, given I’m getting fresh food. Keep in mind, TAKE OUT ONLY. Will get again!“

“Go. To. Tarocco. You. Will. Love. It. Everything is healthy and delicious, but in an indulgent way that doesn't compromise on flavor. The owner could not be friendlier, or more welcoming and gracious. The chef clearly cooks with heart and soul and lots of experience. The atmosphere is sunny, inviting and beautiful. And the daily salads are always a home run. Because the salads are already composed, and you order at the counter, service is immediate. They also have delicious coffee and tea beverages, as well as a daily agua fresca and some really delicious-looking desserts (one a day). I'm vegan, and they have yet to offer vegan desserts, but they always have at least 3 vegan salads available. This is my go-to spot to bring out-of-towners or to go with a girlfriend for a lovely lunch in a beautiful environment. [NOTE: Only open for lunch on weekdays. Weekends and evenings, they're busy doing private events.]“

“A Hidden Gem That Transported Me Straight to Italy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Where do I even begin? We came here to celebrate my birthday and left with a new favorite restaurant — the kind of place you want to keep a secret but simply have to tell everyone about.
From the moment we arrived, the ambiance was pure magic. Their patio seating is absolutely charming — the kind of setting that makes you slow down, breathe in, and just be. We even brought our dog Simba, and without a moment’s hesitation, the team welcomed him warmly and cooked him a chicken breast. That alone tells you everything about the kind of people running this place.
We started with house-made limoncello and an Aperol spritz — both perfect — and let the evening unfold. On our server Jennifer’s recommendation, we ordered the crostini, and what a call that was. Creamy stracciatella, roasted zucchini for brightness, and a satisfying crunch that made it borderline impossible to stop eating. Jennifer also brought us a side of Calabrian chiles (a thoughtful off-menu touch), and we ended up adding them to everything — the crostini, the pastas, even tucked into the focaccia. That heat and depth elevated every single bite.
Speaking of pasta — all of it is house-made, and you can taste it in every forkful. The ravioli and tagliatelle were silky, perfectly sauced, and genuinely transported me. For a fleeting moment, I forgot I wasn’t sitting in a little trattoria in the Italian countryside. The focaccia alongside it was pillowy and golden, and the olive oil that came with it was so exceptional it actually deserves a mention — which is saying something.
The owner came by our table to chat about the fresh ingredients and the origin of the Calabrian chiles, and it was one of those lovely, unhurried moments that reminded me why great restaurants are about so much more than food. He gave the whole evening a warm, personal feel that you just can’t manufacture.
Then came dessert — and if you think you’re full, you’re wrong. The strawberry dessert paired with house-made vanilla gelato was delicate, not overly sweet, and absolutely heavenly. The flourless chocolate cake was something else entirely — rich, deeply decadent, and so intensely chocolatey that I genuinely ran out of words mid-bite. And because we were celebrating, they surprised us with a panna cotta that was impossibly light and perfectly set. It was the most gracious, generous finish to an already flawless meal.
This restaurant is a gem — a real one. The kind that makes every other Italian restaurant feel like it’s trying too hard. I’m already planning my next celebration here.“

“If you're looking for a unique taco place, yet can't eat meat due to dietary restrictions, ima put y'all on Tacos Oscar -- one of the BEST taco spots in the heart of Oakland. This taco place is to NOT be slept on!
As I approached this place, the one thing I really liked was how hipster and how modern they made their dining experience. They're really with the political times, but besides that, they take making tacos on a WHOLE another level.
Their tacos are a little bit on the expensive side -- but because they're artisan made, that's what MAKES it unique. I tried their vegan broccoli taco, drowsed with their thick peanut and soy sauce. The tortilla was made out of 100% corn and nothing more than that. In addition, their agua fresca is on point.“

“I’ve only had their smoothies and tasted the ice cream . It’s pretty good haven’t been disappointed . Thai tea ice cream is fire 🔥 . They do close early , earlier than their posted hours though sometimes a half hour early so best to arrive over an hour before they close . I haven’t tried their banh mi but they do seem pricey at nearly 18 dollars each!“

“Food was really good and healthy compared to a lot of other places out there. Got like a bowl thing that was a little bit spicy but it was really good. My girlfriend got a wrap that she really liked.
Prices weren't bad either given how healthy everything was. All the veggies were fresh and delicious but the sauce was where it shined for sure.“

“I live in LA but my family is here in SF so I travel back and forth frequently. An LA friend blabbered on and on... about “Bob’s Doughnuts on Polk!” She came to believe that I had a deprived childhood because I had never experienced Bob’s! Ooookay... relax lady, it’s a just a doughnut shop.
Recently, I had been up in SF for an extended period of time and was driving back to LA. I decided to surprise my friend with a box of goodies from Bob’s. I had her box packaged up and then selected a couple of doughnuts to nibble on the 6 hour drive... OMG, she was right, I’ve had a deprived childhood!
I like sweets but I’m not normally a “doughnut person”. IMHO - The texture and flavor rivals Michelin star pastry chef status... I don’t know what they do to them, it’s “doughnut utopia”
The texture had a lovely crisp to the outside and a perfect softness on the inside with a buttery flavor. The frosting is excellent- good flavor, texture and sweetness without the grainy, sugariness of many other baked goods. Regardless of the type of sweet, I often find myself scraping off the frosting because it feels like I’m eating straight from the sugar jar.
Bob’s is well worth the trip, calories, carb guilt and “my parents didn’t love me” therapy hours.“

“When I think of a sandwich that has the ability to make my mouth water just thinking of it, few come to mind, but what the sandwiches they make at Southie is definitely one of them. I’ve had their Spicy Hog, steak with mushroom, a few Cubans, but the one that I always come back to is “The Balls” sandwich.
First off, this sandwich is massive, so be sure that you come here on an empty stomach. These beef meatballs are seasoned to perfection and bursting with flavor. The balls are covered in their red sauce with provolone and Grana Padano, which gives it that nutty and salty flavor that pairs extremely well with the meatballs and baguette. All the juices and cheese just get soaked up to perfection. The baguette bread they use is supplied by La Farine, which is just a few meters away from each other. Just putting out there that La Farine is hands down one of the best bakeries in Oakland, so it makes sense that this sandwich would be so dang good. I’ll be honest that I’m not a big fan of the chips or those chips in general and could be fine with just the sandwich. If you are going to have any sandwich to eat here first, I would highly recommend you try “The Balls” because I promise you will be disappointed.
I will always say that the dozen or so times I’ve been here, the staff are always so friendly, and the atmosphere is very down to earth. The price of their sandwiches is in the $20 range, but the quality and portion make it totally worth it.“

“My latte was an absolute delight: rich, foamy, and brimming with flavor, the perfect companion for a long catch up with an old friend. And the almond croissant…oh, the almond croissant! Flaky, perfectly sweet, and honestly the best I’ve ever had. Surrounded by greenery and the gentle hum of fellow coffee lovers, it felt like a tiny whimsical escape from the everyday.“

“A new contender for the best kalamata olive bread (4/5 Green Stars). It’s Day 3 of Shelterfest, sponsored by Coronavirus, and I was feeling kinda satisfied (i.e., less guilty than yesterday) after making an earnest attempt to work remotely. So I took myself off for an afternoon stroll and, landing in the vicinity of College and Alcatraz Ave, decided to pick up some bread if there was any to be had. La Farine was quiet and there was plenty of bread left, even at 4 pm. (So pop in to support them if you’re in the area!) I usually get their rustic baguette but this time bought a loaf of olive bread. The servers were super friendly and one asked me if I wanted some free pastries. Ya-ha I did! I scuttled home with my bag of goodies and heated up one of the freebies – a chocolate croissant (toaster oven, bake for 3-5 min). The croissant doesn’t look that amazing, I have to admit, but it tasted wonderful. Buttery, flakey pastry and just the right amount of good quality chocolate. Later I had the bread – I’m a big fan of Semifreddi’s Kalamata olive bread so the bar was pretty high. I have to say that it was up there with my favorite bread – it was a little fuller than the Semifreddi’s loaf, but that wasn’t a bad thing as I sometimes feel that I’m eating a lot of air with the latter. In summary, I can’t believe I’ve never reviewed La Farine before because I’ve gone there many a time. I recommend the three things mentioned above and also their Irish soda bread is really good and pretty authentic. I just found out that La Farine started out in this location in 1977 – almost as old as I am, said Bilbo. I'm also giving La Farine 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: • It seems that they use conventional white flour and organic whole wheat flour. • Their website is lacking on information on ingredient sourcing (compared to, say Acme). I’d like to know more about their flour, eggs, butter, chocolate, etc. • La Farine donates leftover products to area food banks and senior centers • They also support Bay Area schools and other local causes • Their bags are made from post-consumer recycled paper and printed with water-based inks. • Most of the menu is vegetarian and some of the breads are vegan. Interested in writing green star reviews? If so, contact me!“
