“-The quality of the fish is very good and tasty. They know how to combine and play with the ingredients
- the price is too expensive for what you get
- the service is average. Our server is very friendly. However, we arrived a bit early for our appointment, the server told us to wait for 10-15 min for them to get a table ready since the customers at that table about to pay.We waited for more than 30 min outside, watching new customers came in and out. The server knew we were waiting outside at the door. Then we went inside just to see why they took new customers and saw there were multiple empty tables. It's quite weird when they have available tables and still let us wait outside. It took us a while to get the server attention at the door and also at dining.“

“Unassuming- soon to be addictive. So just about the best kept Secret on Union Street- I am sure to come back, again and again and it is just hiding in plain sight! restaurant. If you can't get to Japan try this- Excellent quality, unusual rolls and exceptionally fresh- crunchy and tasty. High quality. High end details. Like the chef and his no nonsense approach. One Wish- that they would include side of wasabi though with to-go orders.“

“Love the convenience and quality of their sushi. The setup of this place is odd; people don’t know where to stand and there’s a past of the shop that is totally unused. It would be nice if they redesigned the space and could have more things or allow people to not block others trying to look at and grab food.“

“An astonishing 18-course omakase, expertly prepared, sourced in the finest sushi chef tradition of impeccable quality.
Warm and comfortable welcome with a happy-to-share chef who told us stories about his choices in making what has to be one of the finest Japanese experiences stateside.
Tiny space, superbly arranged.
I cannot recommend it enough. Not cheap but value for money if you struggle to “have something you’ve never had anywhere else” (and don’t want the 9+ hour Tokyo flight).“

“This is the best sushi restaurant on Pier 39 in California. The prices are not expensive and we only use fish supplied that day. This is the only sushi restaurant run by a Korean, and you can even eat kimchi if you speak well.
Parking: Paid street parking is available at the end of Pier 39th Street, but is not recommended.“

“Nigiri combo is excellent! I can’t wait to try the sashimi combo next. I came just before they were closing for lunch and people were steadily coming either to pick up or eat-in up until their closing time. It seemed they were regular customers who are keeping this place a secret and happy to say, I am on it already. Can’t wait to go back.“

“A wonderful evening at Okoze with Jason, doing a vast taster session for us organised by some amazing friends.
Some of the freshest ingredients I’ve ever tasted!
From crab, to tuna, to prawn, to scallop, to wagyu, to pickled plum and a wild array in between this was a fantastic evening and wonderful meal. A special shout out to the prawn tempura we started with, so crunchy but so light! Plus the wagyu that melted like butter!
Highly recommend a visit to Okoze for truly beautiful and tasty food.“

“I really like the sushi rolls and the calm atmosphere at Sumo. Hot tea and miso soup to start on a rainy evening. It was my first time having the GoGo roll, with shrimp, avocado, cucumber and DF asparagus... give it a try! The baked scallop roll is a warm savory treat as well.“

“Small shop with warm food and an open fridge section of sushi. There was also a wall of snacks. Prices are very reasonable. No verbal communication which I think is fine but the woman dropped my packed sushi upside down and then tossed it into a bag. Sushi rice was a bit too hard for my liking.“

“I came here with my friends while we were on a field trip and the atmosphere was super cozy, they had good R&B playing and it was lowkey aesthetic. I had the dragon roll, my friend had the sushi bae roll and we both shared the philly roll. We really liked the sushi and we finished it super fast. The staff was super sweet and super awesome, then when they told us about the pictures that they took for their poloroid wall, my friends and I were super excited. We had a really nice experience here and it was very hospitable. I will definitely be back when I have my next field trip in Oakland. Loved it!“

“The rolls come in 8 pieces. We ordered 4 rolls for two people, it was too much! They are super big! And with a good amount of filling. The salmon was super fresh!
We ordered takeout, so we waited just 10 minutes for it to be delivered to us.
We will really come back!!!
Parking: It has free places in front of the restaurant.“

“Great food, great service, great atmosphere with reasonable prices. We had a couple of specialty rolls which were superb. Also the chirashi was not only delicious but artfully presented. The tempura was just right, not greasy at all and also delicious. Are you seeing a pattern here? The plain old salad had a wonderful take on the classic American Japanese restaurant salad dressing over crisp hand torn leaves and was accompanied by a perfectly prepared miso soup as starters. We will be back to this wonderful neighborhood restaurant!“

“This place takes the “& vegetarian” in their name seriously! So many sushi places have “vegetarian” options that turn out disappointing or limited, but not here. There were more vegetarian and vegan rolls than anywhere I’ve ever seen, and those options were just as interesting and delicious as any roll you could get at another sushi place. Plus, the nigiri was delicious - clearly high quality fish, and well made rice.
Vegetarian options: Most of the rolls were vegetarian or vegan, and they were great! Highly recommend the appetizers as well - the stuffed shiitake mushrooms were great.“

“The best sushi I’ve ever eaten (huge pieces!), the lowest prices I’ve ever seen ($5.50 for sake and hamachi), and the most friendly family staff I’ve ever experienced. It’s no wonder this place has been operating for 25+ years. So good I have to go back the very next day.“

“I've been coming here since it opened years ago and it's one of my all time favorite spots. It's not my every-day sushi pick, it's my "I want the good stuff" spot. The fish is incredible quality. I typically get the chirashi because it's a great way to get a sample of some of their great fish, including some you may not typically get at other restaurants, plus they often include some of their incredibly tasty pickled veg and some shiso. This place is so good they make my least favorite things (Ikura) taste incredible. My partner got me their omakase for my birthday one year and it's still one of my absolute favorite birthday dinners. And while the price is by no means cheap, it's also not overpriced. Many lesser quality restaurants charge the same price for substantially inferior fish. I just love this place so much, the charming ambiance, the delectable fish, and the sweet and speedy staff. Everything about it is top tier. Truly a gem of north Berkeley.
Editing to add I was there the same night as "Dan potash" and yeah, it was a loud group, but it's a small place. The vibe is mostly pretty chill and the ambiance is usually pleasant. I would not begrudge the restaurant forever for an unexpectedly boisterous group of diners ONE time.“

“Simple and uncomplicated restaurant. We were on a visit to the Ferry Building and had lunch at this restaurant with quick service, affordable prices and fair flavor. Everything agrees. Nothing pretentious and a very good quality-price ratio. Recommended for quick lunches of sushi or Japanese food.“

“It is rare that I say a sushi restaurant, much less in Oakland, is good but this place is hands down the best sushi spot I’ve tried in the bay so far. The cute waitress was friendly and was very attentive with everything I asked for. The sushi itself felt really fresh and the hand rolls were very tasty.
My only critique is that their spicy mayo is too much mayo and not enough spicy. I would like it to have more of a kick.
The bathroom was immaculate. This would be a great date spot. I’m a single guy but this would be a great place take a date. The interior is cozy and intimate and the sushi area has a cute pink color.
I’m very impressed by this place.“

“We tried both Happy Hour and dinner in one visit—two very different experiences. Overall, the food was solid. The beer was nothing special, but the cocktails were great. Happy Hour is a better deal, while dinner prices are on the higher side.“

“I ordered a tuna poke bowl. It was tasty fish and tuna. Unfortunately it had no rice, not sure if they ran out or that’s standard for them but I’ve never heard of a sushi restaurant not putting any rice with a tuna poke bowl. I’ll come back but recommend that people mention rice if they want that in the dish.“

“Small shop, great food, prompt service. If you're lucky you can dine in. Don't let that turn you away it's a great restaurant. Their sushi is delicious, hand rolls hit the spot, and they're combos will satisfy any craving. My go-to's are the Chicken Katsu, Dragon Roll, and their California Handroll.

“I value consistency and get the same thing everytime: miso soup and double order of shrimp tempura rolls. Always freshly prepared and easily best of the bay worthy. “The oakland hill roll was surprisingly good. We mostly ordered bento. One was shrimp tempura and katsu bento. We came here to celebrate a birthday for a party of 8 and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. They even let us bring cakes and they also helped us light the candle on it. It was a sunny and hot day and we were surprised that they didn't have an AC but the customer service is very good. Will definitely come back.
Parking: Parking space is just behind & beside the store.
Wheelchair accessibility: It's wheelchair accessible. Store is on a single level building.“
