25 Best Coffee Shops in Hilo

“It may be a food truck, but trust me, these folks take coffee culture to a level that makes Starbucks seem like kindergarten. My only complaint: how do you decide what to order when you literally want to try everything on the menu? Orange blossom or Black sesame latte? Thai iced tea (made with coconut milk) or Lilikoi Cheesecake frappucino? I finally went with the Vietnamese iced coffee. Never had it before, but knew that it would be crafted competently here. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this was the BEST espresso beverage I have ever tasted! Super bold espresso flavor tempered with exactly the right amount of sweetness and cream! Five stars is not enough for this business. I will definitely be a customer for life!

“It's literally the best coffee I've ever had...and consistently. I've been going since last year and it's blown me away every time. And I'm from Seattle...the coffee capital of the world. As well as went to coffee school when I became a barista in Seattle. I really think it has something to do with their like $25,000 machine because the actual coffere isn't specialty. It's really remarkable how crucial the machine is. Best coffee on Big Island, for sure. So much so that I felt I needed to write a review about it after a year of having it. ?❤️“

“This place makes the best shakes and coffees.. everyone is very friendly. If your looking for shakes or coffee that's thick and sweet, this place is amazing for it. I really love the workers there because their so sweet and make you feel like they've known you for years. Their tapas are fairly good. Small yet savory, great for breakfast and brunch. “Paul's place is a cozy spot especially for brunch!

As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by Mr. Paul himself with a bright smile and welcomed us into his place.

As we are in October, the place was decorated with fall decor.

The interior is set for 3 tables and a direct view as the chef cooks our meal right on the other side of the counter. It was a special experience as he explained each of his dishes on the menu and then interacted with us as he was preparing our meal.

We were there fairly early so was able to walk in but highly recommend to call in and set a reservation to ensure seating is available.

We ordered the smoked salmon eggs Benedict with his special aioli sauce instead of the traditional hollandaise sauce.

Also ordered the pasta de Marco which he stated was his signature dish for breakfast. It was a unique dish featuring noodles pan fried with eggs to create a light crispy base topped with salmon, bacon, tomatoes, capers, mixed greens. It was delicious and would definitely order it again.

There is limited parking so may have harder time to find parking.

Paul was a phenomenal host and highly recommend others to come visit and enjoy his delicious creations.“

“This coffee shop is actually connected to the general store its next to from the inside and I think is under the store as well. Prices are normal, coffees good, dude behind the counter is nice, what more do you need? We stopped here for some coffee on our way to the beach.“

“We went on the Kona orchard tour and it was amazing! The guide was entertaining and hilarious! I laughed so much! The chocolate was so delicious! I highly recommend this tour!“

“Got the root booch on tap, not too sweet, love the sarsaparilla flavor, would recommend!

Also loved the painted window in the bathroom (which was very clean).

They were playing lofi which lent to a very chill atmosphere.“

“I'm here now and I decided to leave this review right away. This is a courteous friendly crew that made me coming back to Starbucks. It may be me.....coming from Vegas where Starbucks employees are absolutely rude (then stick those payment machines with 15-20-25 percent tip buttons). I tried to tip here where it is well deserved but the cashier said "no tips but thank you for the thought". How's that for being courteous to a customer.“

“Winter Roll is my favorite dish to order. Nobody in Hilo makes this. The nice gentleman always deliver my take out order to my car. Everyone here gives excellent service, everytime I go there!

“Popover is our favorite donut shop in Hilo. Get there early in the day, all the best flavors can get snatched up before mid morning. Some of our favorite flavors are ube, lilikoi coconut, maple bacon and mocha. Save room in your box for some cream puffs- the haupia-filled pastries are three thumbs up!

Parking: Plenty of off-street parking available in their lot.

Kid-friendliness: Kids love the old-fashioned doughnut cases to ogle and choose favorites.

“Great little coffee shop in Hilo. Stopped in with my wife the other day and briefly chatted with the barista, who was a lovely person. I ordered the latte without any frills and it was excellent. There are other fun options for coffee with different syrups and some homemade food. This is a lovely little cafe!“

“Ordered the thai tea smoothie with boba, always tastes refreshing. They were offering a free sample of their tea Jasper Dragon it was delicioso ? and they always have samples of their mini Mochi which I LOVE ❤️ by the time I remembered to take a picture of the drink, it was drunk ?“

“Super tasty! Everything is made fresh to order while you wait, and it only takes a few minutes. We got all the different flavors, they were all excellent. We particularly enjoyed the passion fruit filled ones and the savory ones topped with whipped cream cheese and the herbs. Came back for seconds today. Hot, fresh as can be and delicious. Fast friendly service too!

“I live on a very tight budget. Walmart allows me to live a quality life without having to choose between essentials. I can find any and everything I need at my local Walmart, and with the delivery service and being a monthly member, all my needs are being met in ONE place. “First, food is excellent! They do a very nice job, make it fresh and the place is very cool...right next to two other food counters, also right around the corner from the market. One is Thai, very good as well and another acai bowl place which we also love. I took a star because of the hours, twice now we have gone wanting this and they are closed?? Both times were within what they say open on here, but nothing there but a closed sign, frustrating because we love the food.“

“I tried the Pineapple Mint. Did not taste any pineapple. The flavor kinda reminds me of hibiscus tea and mint. Like I was just chewing gum and swallowed it. The mint stays with you. It is strangely good, and refreshing. Give yourself self a couple swigs to get used to it. Different weird and strange. Gonna try it with Sailor Jerry rum.“

“Great drive through location, however, the last 10 or so drinks, the lid of the coffee smells/tastes like very strong cologne or perfume. Someone must be putting lotion on or some other very strong smell on their hands before touching the tops of the lids.“
