“South Shore Grill has been part of my routine for close to 20 years. It’s a family‑run business with a lot of heart, and I’ve watched the owners’ kids grow up working behind the counter. The food is consistently good, the prices are fair, and there’s a great variety to choose from. It’s an easy stop before the beach or park, or the perfect place to refuel after a day in the surf. My go‑to is always the fish burrito. The cajun seasoning and macnut pesto are always on point. Truly one of those local spots that feels like part of the community.“

We had a weird takeout experience Monday night where the burgers just weren’t right. It happens. Food is food, kitchens get slammed, and sometimes something comes out wrong. But the part that matters is what happens when you bring it up.

And honestly, I was nervous to even say anything. There’s something weird about takeout where it feels harder to complain. If you’re sitting in a restaurant and something is off, you can just say, “Hey, this doesn’t taste right,” and they fix it. But when you take food home, suddenly you feel like you’re about to walk back in looking like you’re trying to pull some scam over a burger. It’s a strange little social pressure we all just accept for no reason.

But I didn’t need to be nervous at all.

I went in, explained what happened, and they immediately handled it with zero attitude, zero questioning, zero weirdness. They were genuinely apologetic and replaced the burgers right away. That says a lot about a place. Mistakes happen everywhere, but not every restaurant handles them like that.

So yes, I still love this spot. My girlfriend still loves this spot. And after how they handled it, I honestly respect them even more.

“Been here for breakfast couple times... was actually good... so good I went back... today I went back for lunch. I ordered 2 plates, short ribs and garlic shrimp. I am a pretty good cook and like that when people prepare food good as well. The place a hole in the wall... no frills the service!!! Real good... the food. Hmmm. Let me tell you the plates were off the hook!! The short ribs great taste flavor soo good cook just the way I like it... Garlic Shrimp... o rank it up there as one of the best I ever ate. “Originally recommended to me by my former boss, Island Sub is a classic, no-nonsense spot. I have to confess: in my opinion, they have the absolute best onion rings in Hawaii. They don't make them from scratch—they are pre-cooked, frozen, and shipped—but whatever they do in the kitchen to fry them makes them unbeatable. Hands down, the best.

While I've tried a few different items over the years, my absolute go-to is the Meatball Sub. I usually order the half size, but this time I treated myself to the full. It’s a beautifully simple combination of tomato sauce, melted cheese, and meatballs, and I’ve never had a single complaint about it.

It’s a wonderful family-owned business where the husband holds down the kitchen and the wife manages the front of the house. They’ve been running it this way since well before COVID. The restaurant itself hasn't changed at all in the ten years I've been visiting, even though the surrounding strip mall has undergone some modern renovations. The interior does look a little run-down and dated, but that's alright—I usually take my food back to the office rather than dining in anyway.

Menu had tons of good looking stuff, so I went with the first combo meal. Their teri beef is very tender, and the hamburger steak was great! But the standout for me was the chili, very unique and satisfying flavor. My friend had the steak and garlic shrimp, and both were cooked perfectly and incredibly delicious.

“The restaurant is somewhat small and very rustic, perhaps a bit more rustic than I anticipated.
Five of us for dinner and everyone was completely satisfied and very happy with their dinners. They even had specialty soft drinks for the kids.
I have never been a fan of smoked meats but I did have the smoked prime rib based on the reviews. It was amazing! Juicy, flavorful and tender. My son had the rack of lamb for the first time. He was also very happy with his choice.

He also gave me some advice on making a good batch of cold brew at home, which I always appreciate.

Food was made to order really fast: I don't remember exactly how long since we were chatting, but maybe five minutes? Deluxe burger was outstanding and made with fresh ingredients, without any frilly extraneous stuff: bun, thick beef patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion (your choice of cooked or raw on that last one). Condiment table is there if you want to add anything to your food, but I thought it was excellent as-is and didn't need anything. The waffle dog is a nostalgic and quintessential classic that was delicious, and that banana ono ono shake! You get a spoon, not a straw, and it's obvious why-- this thing was ridiculously thick and rich and smooth and the highlight of my order. I'm gonna try to go back tomorrow to get a chocolate shake next.

Combined with the fact that this is extremely reasonably priced food in the city, don't overthink it-- If they're open and you're nearby, just go and support these guys! You'll get a cheap and great meal out of it.

There isn't much seating, especially when it is Saturday at lunch hour, it took us longer to find a seat to eat than it did to wait for my food.“

This is what I imagine authentic Hawaiian BBQ for the working man is like. When you go to a BBQ place and see the orange construction either shirts, is probably going to be good and it was. The girl at the register recommend the beef short ribs and they were amazing. My wife had the teriyaki chicken and it had amazing flavor, though a bit overcooked, I still finished it if for her gladly. My only warning: one dish is plenty for two hungry people! We were getting ready to head to the airport and didn't want any to go to waste, so we have half to a mother with four teenage boys. They were 😊. Their small kitchen limits the menu choices, but what they offer is tasty and reasonably priced. The pleasant customer-oriented staff has made it serve as a home away from home for us, and we have always felt welcomed. If/when they leave, they will be sorely missed.“
