“Never had I imagined eating a hot dog with Kalua pig amd onion rings on it or anything else as I eat my hot dogs with only mustard and relish! Decide to give this place a try and must say the hot dog I ordered called "common kings" was very delicious! Definitely gonna go back for more! It isn't a regular bot dog bun that they use either, which make this hot dog so tasty and unique! The only warning is that it is a little messy due to the size, but totally worth the mess!“

“Oof. What can I even say about this place that hasn’t already been said. The food is fantastic, the service is lightning fast, and the people are great. This was the best kahlua pig I’ve ever eaten in my life. Hands down. Their fried butterfish is also incredible. I love that you can get small portions of everything so you can try all the different dishes about getting super full. The coconut custard is also delicious. This is the best Hawaiian food in town. No doubt about it.“

“Bob's BBQ has character, a small shop with good food. My brother-in-law was craving meat and they have it. Great pork ribs, beef ribs and chicken. Comes with rice and mac salad. We also had burgers. Crispy bacon made it perfect. The fries were piping hot. Service was nice and efficient. Other customers ordered fish, if we have time before we leave, we csn do another stop.“

“If you are REALLY HUNGRY, this place will serve you well. I ordered a bbq chicken dish, there three large chicken meat with some veggies, macaroni, two scoops of rice. Quality wise it was OK, not very special but not bad at all. Just a bit salty...“

“This is as local as it gets. Not like rainbow drive-in...?
Opens early (like 5am), lots of food, good prices and is a mom and pop shop.
Breakfast combo, see Pic, is two link sausages, two portagese sausage, two to three pieces of bacon, 1 spam, 2 eggs (any way you like it) over rice. For like $8 plus tax. For years, they kept the price fair with low over head. Other places would have made this $20 by now. Lol
The other items like mix and bbq mix plate is good too. They are flexible, if you want to change the two items, you can. They are poplar among locals and conveniently cheap for kakaako...one of OGs still here...by only open till slightly after lunch
Service is as you expect. Nothing special, go their enough, she knows your order...haha
Atmosphere is okay, you are NOT there to sit for 2 hrs and enjoy. You eat, and you leave, or take it to go. Some would say it's very mom and pop like. Whatever the case, it's worth going to a local drive-in that doesn't inflate prices or ask you for an additional 3% for all credit card payment.
Parking is all on the street. Hard to get, luckily I just walk over. Some are free, most are metered parking stalls.“

“Quite honestly it was one of the best food experiences of my entire trip to O'ahu, even though it was just an emergency dinner after a very long hike - I was very hungry. The place has a local climate attached to it with friendly people you can talk to and listen to their stories. Prices are really good for the amount of meat you get and its very tasty. Only the mac n cheese wasn't that great for me but I guess it's just not my thing.“

“Penny's has been a family favorite for decades. We are addicted to the roast turkey plate (get the onions!).
When my wife was recovering in the hospital after our first born, her meal request was a Penny's roast turkey plate.
We stop in whenever we can.
No better low-key, family run grinds on the island!
Kid-friendliness: The staff is so sweet. Our last visit, they gave our kids little fun bags with crayons, coloring pages, etc.
We'll keep returning!“

“Caught them at Windward Mall this past Saturday, April 9. Best Shoyu Pork….Ever! Prime Rib was da bomb and sooo tender! Very friendly too!“
“As first timers at hawaii, we loved the food and the huge servings! The lady who took our order was warm and friendly as well, she was fond of my son Joel, who greeted her. Cannot beat the price ($ 10-13 for a meal!) and huge serving all over the island! I couldnt finish my food i ate it until dinner haha. They are drive in and take out food shop, cash only and 4 indoor tables only though, nothing fancy but its budget + family friendly, because this whole strip/building are small food businesses side by side.“

“A local eatery there since 1952. We went for lemon chicken but they had none. Got instead, mochiko chicken and BBQ mix plate. Expected better flavors and bbq meats little more moist. We'd prefer the lemon chicken dish. This is June 2024, our meal cost $30.
Historically, if my memory serves me well and if I recall correctly, the location was once an electricity trolley style bus stop, then a taxi stand before it became L&L.“

“Fantastic place. Came here twice with mainland visitors.
FOOD: I agree, the best Mac salad on the island, nuff said. Awesome huli huli chicken. Perfectly grill; not burnt; great flavor; juicy and tender. Can't go wrong with ordering the chicken plate. I really liked the smoothie, but it was not worth the price.
PRICE: two plates, smoothie for $35ish. Pricy, but the chichen and Mac were worth it.
LOCATION: Plenty of parking and easy to find, but it is located away from honolulu.
OVERALL: I will definitely return for the chicken and Mac“

“Note that there is a sit-down restaurant side and a fast food/bakery side. We ate at the sit-down side. We really enjoyed the food. We had many other recommended dishes at restaurants that were supposed to be great but many of them were frankly worse than Zippy’s. The fried chicken and the chili cheese fries are great. The baked goods were a bit too sweet for us. The zip pac was good.“

“1st time visiting from California and my husband's 1st time trying sushi (which took a long time to finally get him to try it). We just happened to find the new place traveling around the island. Evan was working and was exceptional, very friendly and helpful with making selections off the menu. We Loved the atmosphere, especially the Christian music playing. Very clean and a good vibe. We loved it so much we had to buy some t-shirts. Thank you for a wonderful experience! We'll definitely be returning.
Kid-friendliness: Family friendly
Wheelchair accessibility: Our daughter is in a wheelchair and we were very comfortable dining in the restaurant“

“Amazing food and amazing service. This is a small hole-in-the-wall takeout-only restaurant serving up high quality dishes that do not disappoint. The mochiko chicken was phenomenal, the garlic ahi was super flavorful, and the tataki was great as well. Highly recommend.“

“I might go so far as to say this is the best true takeout restaurant in Kailua. Pretty good selection of Hawaiian fair. Generous portions of ahi, and good selection of tasty grilled beef and chicken. The three skewer special was very filling and I felt a great value for money- I think your average couple could probably share this among themselves.“
“This place is great. People are wonderful you have to have the Aunt Anecia (nene) frito chilli pie. Can’t wait to go back. All the love and mahalo“

“Wanted some Island food for a quick lunch before heading to beach. The menu was varied and plentiful. I got the lau lau pork (first time) and it was good. Husband got seafood plate with chicken katsu. The amount of seafood was same as the katsu (he’d hoped more seafood, given the name). Said the seafood was good, katsu was better.“
