“Great Italian food and a decent menu, not much choice but not too much. It's located next to Post Office 34 and is very trendy. The view and service are great, but it's noisy as there isn't much to absorb the sound. We ordered focaccia, roasted peppers and pasta. Everything is great and super fresh.“

“Everyone told me to go here, and even though there was a long wait, it was so worth it. The hostess, Claudia was so friendly, and took so much care and making sure the ambience was on point and the wait was as tolerable as possible. While I waited, I watched her help guest after guest with charm and a smile. She made sure I got an excellent table. Adam was great as well. After sitting, my server provided amazing service and great recommendations. The pharmacy cocktail was spicy, sweet and smoky, and so delicious. I also got the lamb Ragu tagliatelle and scarfed it down along with the bread for the table. Ambience was on point, great staff, great service, hurry down here.“

“This is what we call “fine dining.” We did not reserve the main dining room, as one of our party did not care for prix fixe. We opted for the lounge as you can have from the menu or prix fixe. When you first arrive, you are greeted by a pleasant hat/coat check lady. We arrived early and said we would wait for the other couple and were invited to wait in the intimate cocktail area. The cocktails were superb and served with a house-made cocktail snack. When the guests of the party arrived, we were escorted to the lounge area. An intimate area with about six to eight tables. After being seated and greeted by the head server (maître d' or captain), who explained our options, we all opted for the menu. After looking at all the choices, we decided to split two appetizers. Even though the number of items on each choice was uneven, the server said, “Let me take care of it". And then beautifully presented plates arrived with equal portions. And it only got better from there. The entrées were each explained in detail, including their origins and how they were prepared. I could go on and on. The fish, beef, duck breast, and pork were everything we expected and more. We all commented, maybe the best we have had. The house made desserts were perfect. I had possibly the best cheese plate I have ever had. The entire staff of servers were professionals and enhanced the evening. The most disappointing part of the evening was when a guest entering the dining room (after removing his overcoat) came in dressed in Dockers and a short-sleeve polo. This is an insult to the owner, the chef, and the entire staff at this fine restaurant. But maybe he was an elite or a “special” person. We all said we would be back.“

“If I could give Helena more than five stars, I would. She was nothing short of legendary.
From the moment we sat down, Helena made us feel genuinely welcomed and taken care of. What impressed me most was that she was also managing a very large party right across from us, yet you never would have known it. She handled everything with incredible grace, professionalism, and efficiency—never looking rushed, never making anyone feel forgotten, and always with a warm smile.
She has that rare ability to make every table feel like they’re her top priority. Our drinks stayed full, our food arrived perfectly, and she checked in at just the right moments without ever hovering. Watching her seamlessly juggle such a demanding workload was honestly impressive.
Essex Restaurant is fortunate to have someone like Helena. Outstanding service like hers is hard to find, and she turned a great meal into an unforgettable experience. We’ll absolutely be back, and we’ll be asking for Helena every time.“

“Loved every dish- fluke with black tea, mint and peach(who knew raw fish and fruit went so well together?), amazing grilled artichokes and grilled eggplant. Barely touched my pasta with preserved lemon because I was full, but it was delicious. My daughter’s burger was iconic. The Platonic ideal of hamburgers. Coffee was also delicious. If we had not made a plan to go to La Cabral for dessert and more coffee, I am sure dessert would have been equally excellent.Service was excellent and our waitress was knowledgeable and interested in the food.The fluke reminded me of the first time I went to USC in 1988. I had a plate with raw marinated tuna, raw salmon and raw scallops. The little heaps of fish were so pretty on the plate with their contrasting colors.“

Each dish came out as it was made and each dish was absolutely delicious. A person in our party had a gluten allergy which was no problem and accommodated with ease. We come to NY every year and this will absolutely be a place we revisit again and again! Vegans, vegetarians and omnivores alike will appreciate the dishes and be amazed with the taste! Having dined at some of the finest restaurants around the world, we find that this spot rivals, and in many cases surpasses, all others. Our most recent visit was a mid-morning couple’s dining stop—our answer to a calling to bring pure health and exquisite taste into our bodies and souls. abcV was the perfect answer. We indulged in the unique “Pollen” smoothie (pollen, jungle peanut butter, dates, banana, almond milk, Himalayan salt). I can’t emphasize enough how delicious this chilled and creamy culinary delight was! Served elegantly in a cabernet-style wine glass, I could immediately feel my cells rejuvenate with this healthy creation. The warm vegan croissant was also lovely, with just the right amount of flakiness, perfectly paired with homemade apple butter—yum! Another ‘must-have’ highlight was abcV’s take on Avocado Toast, enhanced with Virgin Coconut & Argan Oils, Crunchy Seeds, Cumin, Sprouts, and shaved carrots. Wow! Thank you, abcV! “The tacos were delicious! I especially recommend trying the Nopal Taco if you’ve never had cactus before,it was one of my favorites. The horchata was also really good; it’s a sweet drink made with rice and cinnamon, and definitely worth trying. There was a line when we arrived, but it moved very quickly. We only waited about 7–8 minutes. Overall, it was a great experience!“

“I'm so glad I finally decided to come and try this restaurant.
The staff and the owner were the absolute sweetest and kindest, I felt right at home as if they were my uncles and brothers. The owner made me get free rice pudding on the house and I got to try their lentil soup as well, which was very cozy.
The owner let me try the hummus and as someone who is picky about hummus, their's had such a nice zing to it. It was thick and smooth, coated my mouth and gone in seconds.
As for the shawarma, it was amazing. I got the chicken to eat there but got a mixed platter to go. Every single item in the mixed grill was phenomenal. The beef kofta was great too. I loved the char on my chicken shawarma more though. You can't go wrong with any choices here.
The rice needs to have its own paragraph however. The owner asked which rice I would like to try as they have two kinds: Yellow rice or lentil rice. I asked for both and was blown away by both. I could not choose which one was better because both were that amazing.
The salad was great too. Perfect pickles and fresh lettuce.
I will say my only feedback is the food did start tasting a bit too salty as you keep eating. So make sure to have water or a drink to help cut through the build up of saltiness. Or maybe I came on a day where all the food tasted a bit more on the salty side, not sure.
All in all, I'm glad I finally chose to go here. This is a spot that you can never go wrong eating in. It's fantastic and dare I say, the best shawarma and Egyptian food I ever had!“
