50 Best Bars in Calgary

“First timers in Calgary, on holiday from England. After scanning the area around our hotel for places to eat and drink we found The Prohibition Bar and decided to give it a go.
Well...we absolutely loved it and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
The atmosphere was great, we booked for 6pm so it was fairly quiet. Our server, Mitch, was absolutely fantastic, very friendly and helpful and seemed genuinely excited about some of the cocktails my wife was ordering.
Food wise, we had the Nonna's Meatballs and Spicy Mango Chicken Nachos...both were great.
Wonderful experience, so glad we did it !!!

“It was a perfect breakfast for the three of us before we dropped out daughter off at the airport. I had my traditional two eggs over easy with toast sausage and bacon. The two others had some wonderful eggs-benny. My eggs were perfect, the toast was perfect, the bacon was crispy, and the sausages were spicy and succulent, making for a delicious meal. Arlene was wonderful throughout the whole meal so thanks to her especially!“

“Really like it here. Good casual and unpretentious vibes, accompanied by solid food and drinks. Service is the same, spot on and low pressure without missing a beat. A great place to spend an evening with friends or family. My only wish is that they’d push the “no minors” to 9pm from 8pm, as 8pm is fairly early on a nice summer night to take the family home. Would result in me being there with my (pre)teenage kids more often.“

“Let me start by telling you about the buffalo chicken mac and cheese poutine - absolutely delectable. Some may say scrumdididilydumpsious. The mac and cheese was ooey gooey, cheesy greatness. The acidity from the buffalo chicken sent electric currens through my body. Don’t get me started with the gravy… ay papi. Eat here if you want to feel your soul touch the heavens.“

Original Joes, I hope you know how lucky you are to have this legend behind the bar serving *the best* vibes and anticipating our every need while doing 1,846,980 other tasks to make a super busy World Cup game day run smoothly! Zach is genuinely kind, so calm amongst the chaos, and such a hard worker yet made it all look effortless.

Other aspects we loved - great location, loved the great choices of seats (at the bar / high tops / booths) and big screens everywhere so there’s not a bad seat in the house. Great drinks, good food and overall fantastic experience… but seriously, Zach is so next-level – come here just to watch this fantastic bartender work some magic :)“

The Champagne section reads like a grower champagne social club: Agrapart, Roses de Jeanne, Delamotte, Roederer (practically a grower).

Quite a lot of rare wines here, including a Suenen Robarts - how did this rarity travel all the way from France without anyone having drunk or stolen it?

Cold cuts, sardines and cheese served, the place is full of young young, smiling people listening to unobtrusive music.

She checked in on us often and made us feel well taken care of. I have several food allergies, and Chef Robbie went above and beyond to accommodate them. “Absolutely loved this place. Everything on the menu is vegan, which is already amazing, but what really stood out was the quality of the cocktails. Honestly, some of the best cocktails I’ve had not just in Calgary, but in Canada. Every drink was beautifully balanced and clearly made with a lot of care and creativity.

Josh, the bartender and owner, is incredibly talented and passionate about what he does. You can really tell he puts a lot of thought into every drink. Katie, our server, was also wonderful, super friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better.

“The good: The food was delicious. Thoughtful, well constructed and balanced plates that felt substantial but delicate at the same time. Their seafood forward menu may scare some, but everything we ordered was fresh and felt like it was carefully procured.

The bad: I had made a reservation and when we arrived they seemed to be confused about the reservation and the manager implied that she was doing us a favour by giving us a table. Despite the reservation I had booked which had taken my credit card, and the had confirmed with me.

This made us feel not as welcome in the restaurant.

“A good place to go in Calgary's Malbrough area near the station itself. Their house ciders are great, not loaded with sugars, and they sell Mexican and latin-inspired food which is both healthy and delicious. I go there often after excercise at the gym across the street.

“Calgarys most popular dive bar. This is a place that tends to be a good spot to socialise and meet strangers. It tends to attract a slightly more older (I won’t say mature) demographic which is nice if you are trying to get away from the places more popular with the 18-23 year old crowd. Anyone from 25-50 can feel pretty at home here.

The biggest issue is that it is somewhat a victim of its own success and there are often long queues to get in as it has a small maximum capacity. It can also get a bit crowded and loud, so if that isn’t your vibe then only visit on a weeknight or during the day on a weekend.

The security guys here are all pretty good natured and friendly to talk to but they won’t tolerate people making trouble so be nice and you will be fine.

The $1 Stan’s hot dogs are amazing, great value and they serve them (and their other food) anytime of the night. The poutine here is also surprisingly good.“
