“For some time I have been enjoying the calamari and plum wine. Every so often, I will stay for a full meal. Last night we were hungry and had salmon and red snapper. The red snapper was good, but the salmon was exquisite - cooked to perfection with a crispy sear . The creamy spicy sause that went on both fish was so flavourful and delicious, I nearly licked my plate. Come for the calamari, stay for the salmon!“

“This has been our go-to spot for oysters for a reason. The oysters are always fresh, flavourful, and consistently high quality. You can really tell there is care put into the food, and the quality has remained excellent. The staff are friendly and welcoming, which always makes for a great experience. We have noticed that some menu items seem to have gotten a little smaller over time, but the quality and taste are still there. We definitely miss seeing Greg since he retired, but this remains one of our favourite places to enjoy oysters and a great meal.“

“Bar Gigi is much more than a great meal—it is a small restaurant with a very distinct personality.

We sat outside on a cool early-fall evening and tried several dishes. The prawn toast was rich and buttery, brightened beautifully by yuzu. The Hokkaido scallop crudo was delicate and refreshing, while the charred cabbage—perhaps the humblest ingredient on the menu—was one of the most memorable dishes of the night. It perfectly reflects chef Sandro’s philosophy: “There are no boring ingredients, only boring chefs.”

What makes Bar Gigi special is the story and spirit behind it. Sandro Chinea, Jaden Kanomata and Kayla Blomquist left established restaurants to create something of their own, transforming an old fish-and-chip shop into this intimate 20-seat neighbourhood gem. The atmosphere is lively, relaxed and unpretentious, while the cooking is confident and highly creative.

It is small, crowded and a little noisy—and that is part of its charm. Bar Gigi feels less like a formal fine-dining restaurant and more like being invited to a very talented friend’s dinner party.

“I tried Modern Steak since my mom was craving a halal burger and they have a wagyu burger option. We were seated quickly without waiting even though it was busy. The wait time was a little long and it was a little hard to catch our waitress, but I don’t blame them since it was busy. I got a halal ribeye steak and it was cooked just right. The quality was also worth the price. The wagyu burger in my opinion was a little lacklustre, but wagyu is always best simple so it was alright. The star of dinner was the Baked Alaska. Absolutely delicious. I would come back just to eat the Baked Alaska again. Definitely recommend for steak and just to try the Baked Alaska.“

“As a treat, I picked up a tray of sushi to go from Ke tonight and when I got home, realized it was a different tray which unfortunately had an ingredient I can’t eat. Upon returning to the restaurant 10 minutes later (I live close), the supervisor couldn’t have been kinder, replaced the tray right away, even identifying one type with the ingredient unlisted and substituted the item, all within only a few minutes. Her response to the accidental mixup with the tray was top-tier and when we finally dug in, the sushi was delicious. Thanks again!“

Occasionally when I want to grab some Chinese take out and I'm in the area, this restaurant is a consideration. Their dinner combo is not too bad and is filling but it is pretty generic. The food here is average but I find the prices to be a bit higher than compared to some other Chinese restaurants. They have a large menu and you can find both Westernized Chinese food and normal Chinese foods here. The service here is standard but I find the atmosphere of the restaurant to be quite outdated.“

“Consistent for Cantonese Chinese family style food. Dimsum is decently priced for 2026. Dishes are usually tasty but feel heavier with grease & saltiness, but no more than restaurant food usually is—portion sizes are fair.

When the service is somewhat brusque and mean, the Chinese food will probably be good. Also in typical Chinese restaurant fashion there will sometimes be a wedding or event blasting music over your meal.“

Had a birthday party asked them to split the bill between the guests, lied and said they would but rather put the entire bill on one with a 20% gratuity. “My husband and I used Charbar as our reception/dinner venue for our wedding in August 2022. Besides a few hiccups, which are to be expected, we had a great experience with them! The food was amazing and all of our guests had nothing but amazing things to say about it! The venue is a beautiful spot, and minimal decor was needed. The bar staff that we had the night of were great and made sure we were taken care of. We were able to have a tasting before hand and our coordinators worked with us to come up with a specialty cocktail that fit our budget. The only thing that might have been lacking was communication between ourselves, the coordinator, and the staff working our event. We struggled to get answers back right away through email, but our wedding was around Stampede time. There were a few mix-ups the night before and the day of our wedding. For example: We were dropping off our cake the night before to be refrigerated and was told that the manager on shift would know about it. When we got there, no one had any idea what we were talking about and our cake was almost given to the wedding that was happening that night. The day of we did not have a charged microphone, and there were some technical difficulties with the sound system during our dances. It was also not communicated on our end that non-alcoholic beverages were charged @$4/drink. Our wedding party also got their food served to them last, so we had to push back our schedule with speeches. There was also supposed to be a separate table set up for our photographer to eat at, and as we were being served dinner, it was then realized she had no where to sit. These hiccups are minor, but definitely made it so there were some added stresses to the day. Besides the difficulties with communication, we would recommend Charbar for your wedding if you are looking for something that is small and simple, but still modern! I would suggest hiring a coordinator if you do choose to use Charbar, only for the fact that as a young couple who did not know the ins and outs of wedding planning, there were things that were missed through communication that shouldn't have been and a wedding coordinator would be able to avoid this with their knowledge and expertise.“

“We came here for a family dinner and ordered off of the menu instead of the buffet. This was far and away the best Chinese food that any of us have ever had. From the presentation, to the service, to the food itself, everything was exceptional! Highly highly recommend the Peking duck and the ginger beef!!“

“A Chinese restaurant that I stopped visiting for ages due to downtown parking cost.
The restaurant price is reasonable and food quality is descent. They now have free parking arrangement across the street, check with restaurant how their parking works.“

“I love trains.

I love everything about trains. The way they chugga. The way they choo choo. The way they connect our great and vast nation of Canada and enable tremendous commerce to occur as a result of their tireless pursuit of logistical excellence.

The only thing is, I get so excited about looking at the trains and thinking about the trains that I often forget to eat and as a result I become very hungry.

It was just my luck, then, that the Selkirk grill exists mere steps away from the location in Calgary where you get to look at trains and go on them and learn cool stuff about them even from the nice gentlemen in the round house.

Our server Ciara and chef Gill hooked us up with yummy food and lovely service, thereby ensuring that not only was my soul sated in its desire for train observation, but so too was my tummy sated in its yearning for a yummy steak.
