“Incredible food and world class macarons, to be sure. One thing that can be said for Essence is that the food is wonderfully consistent, high quality, and reliably good.

But over the past 5 years, the service at the cafe has diverged in the opposite direction from the food. Servers are either overwhelmed, generally slow, or, as they were today, genuinely disinterested. Half of my order simply didn't arrive, including something as simple as a drip coffee. I mentioned to the server who brought my breakfast that I still hadn't gotten any coffee. Her response was that they were being made in order and left with no follow-up. By the time I had finished eating, I just went and got my money back.

It's the food that brings me back to Essence, but the inconsistency of the service is a huge drawback. I remember when it wasn't like this at Essence, and I wonder why things have changed. I want the old place back!“

I was lucky enough to arrive as bagel came out of the oven. I ordered an Everything Bagel with Cream Cheese. She let me know they only use fresh ingredients and I was amazed by the sheer size of the bagel. I was fortunate enough to share half with a workmate and he agreed that it's the freshest bagel we've had in the valley. Will return for bagels and to try the amazing parties in the cases there!“

On what will be my first if many visits I ordered a Cubano sandwich and cannoli, both of which were terrific. The melted cheese on the sandwich united and amplified the savory meats, which were toasted to perfection. The cannoli bread was flaky with a subtle sweetness and the custard was rich and creamy.“

The service was excellent, very friendly and accommodating. They have a nice outdoor porch for eating with misters that help with the summer heat but don’t drench you. Seemed a bit pricey at $19 for the platter. But I guess the prices have gone up substantially at every restaurant in the Phx area.“

The employee who assisted us was Tino and he immediately greeted us when we walked in. Also the chef’s did an outstanding job with our food and the presentation was wonderful.
