“I had heard great things about Fava and their ex Chez Panisse chefs. I got to try it for the first time. It was even better than I thought it would be. I got the lamb sandwich (with cabbage, yogurt sauce, and fresh herbs like Persian sabzi, in a lavash like wrap that they make themselves.) I also got some lentil and kale soup with yogurt. So yummy. It took me back home to Iran. So good!“

Customer service is excellent; and Fernanda does a wonderful job of making sure my order is made exactly how I like, even while working on another order! “One of the best restaurants in Elmwood (4/5 green stars) It’s so easy to walk right by Summer Kitchen without even noticing it. It’s a narrow shopfront with just a few tables outside and it’s easy to miss as you ponder ice cream and other offerings from neighbors. Well, take it from me – forget ice cream and get a baked item from Summer Kitchen instead! Or try a pizza, or an egg salad sandwich – possibly the best egg salad sandwich you’ll ever have. But if you are limited for time, try one of the fresh fruit pastries (galette) – they seem expensive at $12 but they are big enough for two and totally worth it! I’m giving Summer Kitchen 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. The positives are obvious – most of the ingredients are organic and locally sourced. Everything is made from scratch and there is transparent sourcing of the meat and fish (Mary’s free-range chicken, etc.). There are a reasonable amount of vegetarian options and you can definitely find some vegan dishes too (salads, sandwich, pasta). Summer Kitchen could make the biggest environmental impact by scrapping beef from the menu – replacing it with plant-based alternatives, ideally. Beef has a carbon footprint of around 10 times that of chicken and over 100 times that of pea protein, on average. If everyone one the planet ate 1 lb. of beef per week (the US average), total greenhouse gas emissions would increase by one third! I’ll write a post illustrating all of this soon on the Green Stars Project. So I really appreciate that Summer Kitchen makes more effort than the vast majority of restaurants on improving sustainability so that’s my suggestion for the biggest opportunity for improvement – cut the beef.“

“Good gyros. My favorite is the beef and lamb gyro. Ground meat kebab can be a bit hit or miss, but the texture isn't too fine, and the meat isn't sliced too thinly, which I like. The prices for all the gyros is the same, which is a little odd to me and makes the falafel feel like a bad deal, it's still good.“

We split a plate of 3 and got the short rib(x2) and the unagi. Very small inside the restaurant, very much a get your food and go type place, but there is some room to eat standing up. “I've been here twice. First time was amazing, second time was really good. Both times the sandwiches were 5 stars and plentiful. I would go here regularly if it was closer. The staff is pretty good and welcoming especially being a first timer and not really understanding their process or knowing the menu. I wish the place was more organized. If it's busy, I can understand that things get a little disorganized but when it's slow, toddy things up. Definitely plan to go back.“

“I have been a regular Tilden golfer since 2019 (especially on Tuesday nights...when the real pros come out!). The recent opening of The Overlook has been a fantastic addition to the course. They did a great job with the drink selection, with lots of local beers on tap. The outdoor space is so nice, with heat lamps and a fire pit. Also, if you haven't been out to Tilden before, you will love the views and serenity out there. It reminds me of getting a drink at the top of a ski resort in Tahoe. Bravo Tilden!“

Got my pizza well done and man oh man, better than jets with the quality of fresh ingredients. I can just tell it fresh and hot. They know what their doing in the kitchen I tell ya what!

I'm usually picky about quality of my meals. But this is a better option than being let down with a big rib or steak dinner elsewhere. Best pizza I had in a few years no lie.

“We live in this neighborhood and if you know the North Shattuck and Northbrae Neighborhoods, there is no shortage of walkable dining. We just love Jerusalem Organic Kitchen for a consistently well prepared meal, friendly staff, and really good ingredients! They serve a quick, casual, healthy, and absolutely delicious meal. Everything we have tried is great with balanced seasonings. My personal favorite is the Shawarma Platter. Don't miss the perfectly prepared salmon platter with a generous serving of salmon that won't set you back an arm and a leg. The salad with chicken shawarma on top is great too. And they, of course, prepare a great middle eastern platter and falafel platter. And if all you want is a sandwich or burger - you won't be disappointed. Get the idea? We like their food and for good reason - they don't try to be all things to all people - they do middle eastern cuisine and do it really well. Try it - you'll like it!“

“This was our first time here, and everything we ordered was delicious. My daughter had the beef ravioli, which was perfectly cooked and well-seasoned. I ordered a Caesar salad, and it was fresh and tasty. My son got the Margherita pizza, and we all enjoyed it. “I gave this location a try on Friday. I was the first one. My takeout order came out pretty quickly. It took 10 minutes. I ordered a spicy one and it had some kick to it. I wish the portions were a little bigger. Fortunately, I ordered a side item to help fill me up. For the price, I would say, it is above average... but not as good a value as Curry House when it was still around.“

“Delicious but somewhat expensive burgers in the Gourmet Ghetto that is in North Berkeley. Barneys is a small chain of hamburger restaurants that are primarily in the Oakland Berkeley area. We didn't know, but now we do.

For perspective, a Barneys burger costs $17.50, but it's a really good burger. Burgers are cooked to order with very good quality beef. Fries, onion rings, and other sides are ordered separately. Whereas the burgers were excellent, the onion rings and fried vegetables (their version of tempura) were on the oily side. Keep this in mind.

Their menu is expansive, and they offer salads and other items. We stuck to the burgers.

Service is friendly and efficient. Parking can be challenging, but there are metered spaces about a block away near Safeway.

The restaurant is clean and well maintained. The shiny sign out front gives a slight indication of the pride they take in the establishment... or maybe we're just being too generous.

In any case, on a nice day, try to snag a table on the patio and bite into a juicy, well crafted burger..all while soaking in the liberal elite vibe of North Berkeley It's a nice experience.“

“On June 22, 2025, it was the day my mother passed. My daughter and I had my aunt's and my cousin's support at the hospital. Later that evening after we left the hospital, my cousin wanted us to join him and my aunt for dinner and we headed to Alborz in Berkeley. Fantastic Kebab place. Dinner was delicious. I ordered the Koobideh, which comes with 2 skewers of kebab, rice, and a tomatoe. My daughter ordered the Sultani, which comes with one meat skewer and one chicken skewer, also with rice and a tomatoe. I have taken some photos for you to see how beautiful the platters are. Service was awesome as usual. My daughter and I have dined at Alborz before and we have never been disappointed. There is also music playing while dining.“
