“What a pleasant surprise.

Few people come to Tahoe for the food, but Sage Leaf made this meal feel like a destination in itself.

The burrata appetizer was beautifully composed. The citrusy yuzu jam, perfectly toasted bread, savory prosciutto, and creamy Di Stefano burrata all worked in harmony. Every component felt intentional and contributed to the dish without overwhelming the others.

We also loved the Niman Ranch pork chop. The citrus brine kept the meat remarkably tender while giving it a clean, bright flavor. Paired with creamy polenta and perfectly cooked mushrooms, it was both comforting and refined.

The house-made pasta was another highlight. It appears to change with the seasons, and this version showcased a thoughtful selection of vegetables that truly felt like “eating the season.” The combination of balsamic and pesto was unexpectedly delicious—the acidity of the balsamic brought out the richness of the Parmesan beautifully.

What stood out most was the care behind the food. This is clearly a kitchen that cooks with intention and respect for ingredients. Our server, Brandon, was excellent and made us feel that same level of thoughtfulness throughout the meal.

If I could offer one small piece of feedback, it would be that a few dishes seemed to have many ideas competing for attention. A bit more restraint and a clearer focal point might make them even more memorable.

“The food was good overall, but it fell short of expectations. I love the eclectic combinations, and the ingredients were high quality. The scallops and Mac n cheese were elite. The tuna tartare and ribs were very good. The halibut and butter lettuce salad were ordinary. The cookies and cream sandwiches were offensive given the level of the restaurant. It felt like something out of a grocery carton, and ultimately pushed me to give a 4-rating.

“Let me first begin by saying the waitstaff is incredibly kind, attentive, and friendly. Furthermore, the atmosphere—outside in particular—is just lovely, especially when they have live music; it’s set amidst the Truckee River with heat lamps and a fire pit to keep you toasty and this gem is easily accessible from a bike path no less. Should you order the Strawberry Shortcake, it is enormous and delicious. For these reasons alone, the River Grill should receive 5 stars. The reasons it does not, though they won’t dissuade me from returning, are to follow. I ordered the Grape Martini—unique, intriguing, and my waitstaff gave it a good name. It was good I must say, but it, as one could expect but at the same time not really think to, tastes exactly like grape juice. I did initially have to send it back because it came garnished with cranberries (of which I am allergic) instead of frozen grapes as advertised. You could imagine my chuckle when I watched my waiter, from afar at my table, present it to the hostess and I watched her fish one of the cranberries out of the drink, plop it in her mouth, and hurry away disgusted. They remade my drink which was kind of them but it did take acquiring the taste to not think of Arthur on a Juicy Juice carton. For dinner I ordered the Beef Tenderloin—the asparagus was amazing, the whipped (mashed) potatoes were yummy especially with the Demi Glaze, and the beef itself was good but more on the medium-well side when ordered medium which is kind of getting into semantics I know, however, it was a little dry. I also ordered the Truckee Sourdough but it never came despite being charged for it until brought to attention. For a 20-something who doesn’t have $100 to spend on a fancy dinner often, this combination can feel a little disappointing. Should I have the opportunity to, I would come back to River Grill because it, overall, was a lovely evening.“

“I love pizza! Gathered here with a work group and had a very nice time. Atmosphere was relaxed. Staff was so friendly and helpful. FOOD - first the salad bar was delicious/fresh and so yummy! The pizza?! Amazing! I was really happy to bring some home to enjoy! Go and eat - you will not be disappointed!“

There are choices for each course so each of us ordered different items so that we could taste everything on the menu. Such interesting items like fir needle ice cream. “I was so impressed by the service at Dopo Pizza & Pasta. We made a reservation for our anniversary on the Saturday night of Labor Day weekend. The restaurant was packed and they were running behind. Our table was delayed by 20 mins. That certainly could have tanked our evening but the manager and wait staff went above-and-beyond to make it up to us, offering wine and an appetizer on the house while we waited and continually checking in with us. Some problems can’t be avoided in a restaurant, but the way you handle them and take care of your guests are within the establishment’s control and the management of Dopo exemplified the “right” way to handle these things. Oh, and the food was great, too! Highly recommend the burrata app.“

“let me tell you something. I grew up in Sun Valley. Tahoe is part of me. My sister called the night before. They didnt take reservations. But, we told them what was up. my sisters n I planned a weeks trip for my mother's 78th birthday. We hadn't all been all together since my littlest sister was 4... 36 yrs later we are all in one place. Our mother wanted to see her friends. Basically our second set of parents growing up. We pretty much pretended we were nonchalant about it. Their daughter n us put a scheme together to surprise them all. Weeks of planning. The night staff left a note for the morning staff. They open at noon. The party of three showed up at noon... us, the party of six showed up 10 minutes fashionably late. So we could surprise n give our elderly parents arrhythmia.The staff was awesome! Table ready, James our waiter was spectacular...the food.... awesome. Not many restaurants would be asking as people came in... are you the party of 9? lol my sister from another set of parents...as her mom confused said " no we are a party of 3" and her daughter leaned back and whispered ..." yes we are the party of 9. but they don't know shhhh!" it was spectacular! Thank you to the staff... you all rock! I hope if we ever make it back and you're still are rocking the vibe we got today, we will be there. You all take care of your staff. Today this place made our moment so special. We cant say Thank you enough.“

“I was searching for food that was not crowded, admittedly I was overwhelmed by the weekenders that flock from all over cities that were crammed in the shopping district. I spotted a church building with a small sign that said, cafe open, as I was making my way out of town with haste. Alas, I found exactly what I needed. Score, big time. It is a beautiful, tranquil space, and the sandwich I had, Ban mi (add turkey)...beyond exquisite. The lavender drink concoction was eloquent and refreshing. Our family of 18 had arranged ahead of time to have dinner here for my dad’s 80th birthday, but we were also hoping to surprise my dad with line dancing lessons after dinner as he’s always wanted to try it but hadn’t had the chance. Although TNBC has public line dancing events every 2nd and 4th Sunday evenings, we were only in town in between those times. “One of our favorite places in Truckee, both summer and winter. Very comfortable inside and outside, and always a nice atmosphere. They also have a really impressive wine selection, including some bottles that are not easy to find.

And definitely save room for the cookie skillet with ice cream! We get it almost every time and it’s worth it :)

“First time in... Food was good and the portion was decent. Not very busy and three servers were on. Service was slow I felt and the bartender was less than friendly, charming or outgoing. Maybe they were having an off night, I don't know. I would go back but maybe just for drinks? .“
