“Weird that there are so many negative reviews. I eat here at least once a year when visiting and the experience has been pretty consistent over several years. The most consistent negative thing I could parse out from other reviews that I agree with is the looseness of the rolls. The nori is not tight and sometimes is broken, which results in the roll partially falling apart. While not something the restaurant would want to happen, it really only detracts from presentation. The fish is always good - never had anything that was old, slimy, fishy, or anything else some of the other reviews say. I get a huge variety of platters including nigiri, specialty rolls, and poke, so I feel like it’s an adequate mix of their offerings. The menu is varied and should have something for everyone. There are no written descriptions of the rolls or platters. They rely on pictures on the menu (which I uploaded as of September 2023), but they’ll explain it all if you call or enter the shop.In summary, if you’re in the area and have a hankering for some good sushi, Waipuna Sushi is a great choice. If you want poke, the Food Land down the road is a better choice, but Waiapuna’s (limited) poke choices are serviceable.

“Found this place on Google maps while looking for a dinner spot. Was able to get a reservation for a time we wanted. The place was great. We at outside were able to look at Ko'olau during our dinner. All the food we ordered was great. My Chirashi deluxe finally came out after everyone else had finished their meals. Which was a bit disappointing. But the manager did comp our drinks.“

“I read the bad reviews first just to have another point of view prior of my visit.
Obviously all this review are points of views and I respect that. My personal experience in this place was awesome, I found this place really tasty and delicious. Of course I get my favorite California Roll and I request unagi Sauce, the amount was very generous, I get a Salmon avocado roll, mmmm very very delicious, if my first time trying this one. My friend he get a lot of food. I don’t know what he get but he eat everything ?
If I go to Waikiki I definitely I can stop by because the location is at the entrance of Waikiki. I don’t know if they have parking just because I don’t drive so is something to check is some visit this place and arrive by car

“It was a genuine privilege to watch a master at his craft. The food was fresh and delicious, uniquely prepared in front of you. The restaurant is a discrete and intimate experience with only 10 seats (6 at the counter to watch the chef).
We had the 21 piece option and it is truly worth it.“

“I don’t know why it had the bad comment about this lunchbox that it is going to be my favorite so far from now on I expect that the sushi rice is gonna make from the red vinegar but actually is kind of like regular rice with white vinegar maybe and a little bit sweet but still tasty I got otoro uni ankimo a lot of ikura and a lot of kind of fish every pieces so fresh and tasty
The fish may be coming in small pieces but this is what chirashi box supposed to be
May you feel this box is not to big but for the girl I eat a half box and I feel full already and leftover I keep for My Husband
Guys and this box just 40$ after tax around 44$
I feel like I have small omakase from this box so don’t miss it when u come to hawaii????
But location of the restaurant really hard to find so it’s gonna be in the lobby floor so your support to take the elevator and when you come out, turn right be careful to pick up in time 4:30 PM they’re gonna keep your box until 5 PM after that they have to throw it away, because it’s a fresh fish
Staff, smiling and really polite
I would buy this-box again and this restaurant gonna be my restaurant for my anniversary with My Husband for sure❤️“

“This was a birthday dinner at sunset. We had the prime table with a view of the sun setting over the ocean. Our server was upbeat and helpful with menu items. He recommended a much better red wine in a similar price range. The food was fantastic. While expensive, it was very much worth the cost. This capped a wonderful day.“

“Very small, take out only place. With fast and excellent service. I enjoy my visit every time I'm here from the mainland.
Parking: Location is in the windward shopping center near foodland. Lots of free parking. The only negative is the parking stalls are very small. Seems every stall is designed for compact cars only.“

“We had the lunch menu, and it’s great value at only $150! The upgrade didn’t seem necessary since it only included an additional abalone steak. The service was excellent, and we loved the hot green tea—it paired really well with the omakase.“

“This place should be rated WAY higher. The rolls were FRESH, the rice was HOT; they even used real crab in their rolls! (I don't think I've ever had sushi made with real crab before)
I WILL SAY-- they're only cash. But that doesn't matter when the food is that great.
Perfectly filled my bf and I for lunch for $13.“

“I discovered this restaurant while playing in the water with my family at the Hilton Lagoon. The Korean owner was very kind and customized it to suit the customer, leaving out the wasabi since he said it was for children. “Update: So I ordered again to give the place another try. I ordered a salmon bowl again. I asked again for no sauce, in much more specific terms and hoped for the best. They came through this time and I was able to enjoy the food without worrying, so I'm very happy. It was yummy, but I did notice the sprouts and cucumbers were missing. These were listed in the base ingredients for the bowl, which is why I didn't request them as an add-on. It's a pretty pricey meal, so please remember to include everything next time.
Original review: I just ordered a bowl from here. In my order, I explicitly asked for no sauce on or in my bowl, both by choosing the "no sauce" option and by writing "no sauce" in the request section. Also asked for no fried onions. I can't have the sauce or the onions because I'm on a strict, doctor-ordered low sodium diet. The food gets here and it's slathered in sauce, fried onions everywhere.“

“The best Seafood Tempura in Hawaii! Scallops, calamari, shrimp, crab, ahi & assorted veggies. Light, crispy and cooked to perfection. Highly recommended!!! Ask for lemon & salt for all the seafood, if you want to take it to a higher level. I learned this from a tempura bar in Japan.“

“I wonder why they serve human food but have the name “fish food”? hm, the world may never know. anywho, i had the spicy ahi bowl (?) that came with rice, some fish, and 2 pieces of gyoza with sauce. the fish was good and had the spiciness of a 3.5 on the caucasian scale of spicy; has a little kick but won’t make you cry out for jésus or anything. the convenience of having poke on base was amazing but the portion size was not! $15 or so for a small bento sized meal is a little pricey as poke bowls at foodland are about $5 cheaper and they give you more fish and rice as well. For the size of fish food hawaiis spicy ahi, i have attached a pic to show the size with an ice breakers ice cube gum for a scale (didn’t have banana for scale)“

“I recently rediscovered Sushiya on Waialae Avenue and it's quickly become my go-to sushi spot in the neighborhood. This family-run gem exudes warmth and hospitality, making each visit a delightful experience. What I love about Sushiya is how convenient it is. There's always easy parking right out front, perfect for those days when I'm in a rush and need a quick grab-and-go option. It's also ideally located for a stop on the way home.Their menu has a great mix of classics and their own special twist on local favorites. My favorites so far are the Crunchy Spicy Ahi Bowl and the Spicy Dynamite Maki - both are packed with flavor and the portions are super generous.Plus, they're currently running a fantastic promotion – $10 off on orders over $40 with an American Savings Bank debit card, which is pretty much a whole free roll every time you visit. If you're looking for a friendly, convenient neighborhood sushi shop with amazing food, Sushiya is the place to go. Can't wait for my next visit!“

“Omakase is special here. Everything had an extra element of nuanced flavor and treatment that is uncommon if not rare to find in most other sushi restaurants. You can tell by the first plate you're presented as starters. Tiny place, so plan on getting to greet and chat with others. But the dinner I attended here we ran into only cute families with cute kids.“

“Found this small restaurant as I walked around the area. Prices have increased from the menu I saw posted on here. Most are three dollars higher. There is a small seating area and I suppose you can eat there but this seems more like an order and go type of place. Food is decent. I found the portions to be spot on. I couldn’t finish my bento box and I took a bite of the poke bowl my wife ordered. Both were good. Fresh stuff. I’d recommend for sure.“

“I liked that the owner and staff were very friendly. The kimchi udon was really delicious... The salad was also delicious, and a great dressing restaurant?? They also recommended a menu and when I was disappointed that the menu had disappeared, they said there were ingredients left and gave it to me as a service. I was impressed... The roll came out as requested, so I ate it up without leaving any food behind. . We finished the meal neatly by providing dessert ice cream as a service. I come to Hawaii often enough to go every year, and I will visit again next year! I am proud that many foreigners came to visit. May you prosper :)“

“Absolutely love the home-like atmosphere. The gentleman in the front was very comforting and relaxed. He even took the time to take my food out of the bag when he realized I was dining in for lunch. He even gave me a bowl of Miso The sushi is good - Spicy Ahi comes finely cut, not cubed like foodland... and to me, it's a winner. I also got their grilled salmon Maki which was tasty, not drenched with unagi or anything like that, just finely drizzled so you could still taste the fish. Overall lovely place to come if you're trying to get away from those big box brand and food courts.“

“This is a better omakase than in NYC, and like many others commented it is on par with Japan. I very much enjoyed here every course, and I highly recommend it. I also appreciated that the premium course had abalone and abalone liver, because that also speaks to omakase traditions.“
