“Life has its bittersweet moments, and I’ve found one of the sweetest right here on Magazine Street. I’m in New Orleans for medical treatment for the next several months, and while my journey hasn’t been the easiest, I’ve discovered that kindness can be as comforting as chocolate.

A few dear friends ordered a dozen cupcakes from Bittersweet Confections, and when one of the owners, Cheryl, heard I was sick, she personally added me to their delivery route, just because. I can’t promise that kind of door to door service for everyone (I happened to live a few blocks away), but the gesture itself meant more than words can say.

I opted to pick them up and eventually, I ventured out for some fresh air and walked to the shop myself. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the kind of place where you instantly feel like a regular. Jake and Grace treated me (and everyone else) with genuine Southern hospitality. You can tell they love what they do, and it shows in every cup of coffee and crumb of cake.

Now, technically, sweets are off limits for me right now but let’s just say resistance crumbled after one look at their cupcakes. I took a few bites of the Red Velvet and chocolate with a coconut frosting, and they were so good. The rest I shared with my nurses, who agreed that Bittersweet’s confections are pure medicine for the soul.

For now, I’m savoring the occasional breakfast and the comforting smiles that come with it. When I finish my treatment, you can bet I’ll be celebrating here one perfectly sweet bite at a time.

“First time in and tried the s'more bar and the almont petit four. I liked the toasted marshmallow on the s'more. The chocolate layer was unexpectedly light and mild. I expected a darker flavor and a denser texture. So this is a delicate, melt in your mouth s'more. The thin graham cracker base was soft and it's contribution was lost in the overall velvety experience. It is a very good elevated pastry, and I discovered I'm a bit of a traditionalist who prefers the more familiar textures of a traditional s'more.
The almond petit four was recommended by staff and it was exceptional. Great texture, aromatic almond and petit enough for its sweetness to not overwhelm.“

“We stopped into O’Delice French Bakery for a snack. The atmosphere is very neat and fun, similar to a French Bakery. The nice lady behind the counter explained which pastries contained tree nuts. The lemon tart was delicious and we were very pleased with our choice.

My dad lived in Germany for 8 years in the 70s, and was excited to see a place that served the food and beer he missed so much. A plus was the outside seating and the beautiful day. “I was in Tremé for four days, and I ate and drank coffee at Fatmas each and every single one of those days. The coffee was amazing. The food was delicious and their pastries were just beautiful. I loved the atmosphere and the outside seating. There’s even a couple of open windows where you can just stand and look out and feel the breeze while you’re waiting for your food.
