But there I was being assailed by the flavors and softness of their cornbread. I spent a few years living down South, and I can’t get southern food this good down there.

Their fried chicken was flavorful and crispy.

The Mac and cheese was maybe a little drier than ya mom’s mac on Thanksgiving, but if she brought this out you’d still have seconds.

And that Southern Twang was the Twangiest.

“This place is excellent. I bought my friend from Japan with his family and was happy to take them to Cornbread for some authentic soul food. Needless to say my friend and his family loved the experience. They were finishing a road trip throughout the US and they thought the food at Cornbread was some of the best they had in their month long journery. The turkey wings were particularly good and I'm saying this as a person who is mostly vegetarian. Service was also excellent with attentive help and the servers were conversational and friendly with my friends and I. Bathrooms were also very clean. I wholeheartedly recommend Cornbread Montclair as a solid business and a great place for delicious Soul Food.“

“I am giving the soul food experience here a 5 out of 5. Or a 12 out of 10. Each platter is Huge- enough to feed 2 people!!!! I ordered the fried Whiting with potato salad and candy Ames. It came with 4 to 5 pieces of fish, 2 pieces of bread, generous sides and cornbread. It was delicious!!. I would not recommend the curry chicken if you are looking for a true, jamaican curry period that curry here was dark and thick, like other caribbean islands, possibly trinidad, make it, and that's not what we like. You definitely want to order in.advance.. as each order is made fresh- IT IS WORTH THE WAIT!!!... there is no seating or indoor dining. Straight take out.“

“It was a little bit overrated if considering the price. Everything was fine but nothing stood out.

The signature soup rice was mild. For me it was a little bit watery, like the meat/ bone was not cooked into the soup.

Kimchi dumplings were delicious. The skin was pliable even it was thin. Kimchi has a nice flavor too.“

“I finally made it to Katie O’s Soul Food, and everything I ordered was amazing. I had two pieces of fried catfish — crispy, seasoned perfectly, and fried just right.

My sides were all full of flavor and tasted homemade. My plate had:
• Fried catfish
• Candied yams
• Collard greens
• Mac & cheese
• Potato salad
• Cornbread

For dessert, I had their banana pudding, and it was absolutely delicious. I washed everything down with a strawberry lemonade that was refreshing and sweet.

When I say I came home, made my plate, ate, took a shower, and went straight to sleep? That’s how you know the food was GOOD — seasoned to perfection, fresh, and made with love.

To make the experience even sweeter, I later found out the owner is actually my good friend’s niece. The hospitality and courtesy were on point from the moment I walked in.

“I've ordered take out from the location on 117th Street twice and their food is delicious! First time I ordered All Fish. It was nicely seasoned and fried crispy. Second time I ordered the Fish and Shrimp dinner with Collard Greens and Candied Yams. The meal definitely hit the spot! The Collard Greens are quite tasty (I could order them as a side minus the Fish and Shrimp). I swear by their Collard Greens, they have a slight smoked flavor! I give them two 👍🏾👍🏾! The Candied Yams were delicious with a hint of sweetness to them. They get a 👍🏾 as well. Fish and Shrimp were tasty. Service was fast and professional. I would have liked them fried just a little harder so you'll have to make that request, if you're like me. On the day to order, they completely switched up on me and made me come in to pick them up immediately and when I got there, they didn't have my order ready at the time they insisted I be there. I ended up waiting another 30 mins for my order. It cost me 1.5 hours total and I was really late for my party. I will try not to hold this against them because it was really busy for them. “Big Al’s is one of the few authentic soul food spots on the Island. I ordered through Uber Eats, and the pickup process was smooth for the courier. The food was packed well and showed up still very hot.

The ribs were super tender and fell right off the bone. They had this good mix of barbecue and peppery flavor. The wings had a nice little crisp to them too, not super crunchy, but not greasy either. Some hot sauce would have made them perfect, but they were still solid on their own.

The yams were soft and not overly sweet, with a strong but not overpowering taste of cinnamon. The mac and cheese had a slightly dry top layer, but once mixed together, it was rich, creamy, and velvety.

Portions were good and the prices were fair for what you get. Definitely worth checking out if you’re craving soul food in Staten Island.“
