“We had not been to The Shanty in years, but are so happy we decided to go back. The food was delicious and the service impeccable. Karen was the ultimate professional. The TV dinner was absolutely amazing and my son had the summer pasta, which was fresh and delicious. Maybe the highlight of the night was the Snickerdoodle Ice Cream Sandwich which was easily shared by three. Honestly, I can't wait to go back.“

“Delicious food and genuinely great service! I ordered two Walt Jrs., and both were incredibly tender—melt-in-your-mouth good. I also got fries that looked fresh and delicious, but honestly, the sandwiches were so good that I completely forgot I had fries and never even touched them.

The service was just as impressive. The cashier greeted me as soon as I walked in and was quick and friendly taking my order. I could see the kitchen staff start making it almost immediately. There were two or three people working in the kitchen and, since there weren’t other orders at the time, they all jumped in together to get mine completed. That may seem like a small thing, but as someone who works in food service, I notice it. It shows good training and a team that is paying attention to the guest in front of them.

I do want to mention one issue, mainly because I hope it reaches whoever is responsible for the building itself. There was a very strong and unpleasant smell inside the restaurant. I normally use the drive-thru, so this was my first time actually going inside, and the odor was strong enough that I noticed it immediately.

I saw another review mention a sewer-like smell, but that wasn’t what it smelled like to me. I honestly couldn’t identify it—it reminded me more of damp or deteriorating wood/building materials than anything coming from the restaurant itself. I even looked around before ordering because the smell initially made me concerned about cleanliness, but the restaurant, kitchen area, and equipment that I could see all appeared clean and well maintained.

That’s why I don’t think it’s fair to hold the Walt’s staff responsible for it. I’ve worked in businesses where the tenant had building or property issues that were ultimately the landlord/property owner’s responsibility, and this struck me as something along those lines. I’m mentioning it because the odor is strong enough that I think it deserves attention and could definitely affect a customer’s first impression of the restaurant.

Most importantly, I’m glad I stayed and ordered. The food was excellent, the staff was great, and I had absolutely no issues with my meal afterward. In fact, I’m planning to go back today—I’ll just be using the drive-thru this time!

Five stars for the food and the team. I just hope someone can figure out what’s causing the smell inside, because the staff and the food deserve an environment that matches the quality of the experience they’re providing.“

“I had a birthday celebration at this restaurant. We sat near the cozy fireplace on a chilly night. The cheeseboard (varied cheeses, focaccia bread, honey, blackberries, nuts, jam, greens) and Pt. Judith calamari were beautifully presented. Excellent bottle of Pinot Grigio from Tuscany, Italy added to food, Staff was very accomodating. I enjoyed mussels, scallops, little necks over pasta in scampi sauce. Others had the salmon as well as the bolognese. It's a very roomy, quiet setting near the water. Staff came out to sing happy birthday with a luscious ice cream dessert with a candle on top. I was pleasantly surprised. We will return to this place for sure!“

“I wanted to come back and leave a review for this unique and cozy restaurant. Me and my husband dropped in and honestly had one of the best dinners we've ever had. The vibe of this restaurant in general is great. It's quiet, cozy dimly lit Aunt. I couldn't stop staring and everything. The food was amazing and tasty. I had the Mozambique mac and cheese which was suggested by our lovely pleasant waitress. It was so tasty, one of the better dishes I've had in years. The chicken wings, are the best chicken wings I've ever had. They were the Sriracha honey wings, crispy and incredibly juicy and tender. We also had the deconstructed s'mores dessert which was so good and I'm not a huge dessert person and even I was amazed by this. We would definitely come back again and I highly recommend you come here for dinner.“

“I came here to celebrate my boyfriends birthday and everything was phenomenal. The food and the drinks were both incredible. We both got one of their homemade sodas, the ginger and the lemon lime, and they were both so light and refreshing. I got the summer squash fettuccini and the noodles were incredible and the sauce was so comforting and delicious. My boyfriend got the soft shell crab to start and the duck, which he said were both incredible. The atmosphere of the restaurant was so calming and cozy and the staff were great. Will return.“

“We hosted our daughter’s first birthday at Portside Tavern, and it was truly the best experience from start to finish. The event space was spacious, clean, and perfect for a private celebration. Set-up was easy, the staff was incredibly attentive and friendly, and the food was excellent. A special shout-out to Caroline, who was wonderful to work with and made the entire process seamless and stress-free. “Location/decor/ambiance: the owners have tried to turn the spacious brick and beam interior of a former factory building into a ghetto-ish inner cityscape skateboard park using graffiti-style airbrush graphics, little skateboards that serve as bar chair seat backs, concrete floors painted with Providence manhole covers, etc. Visually, the effect is mixed. I “get” what the owners are trying for, but it isn’t for me an “attractive” dining decor. It looks much more like a dance club for young twenty-somethings. I quickly adjusted to the inner-city grunge decor, but what we couldn’t adjust to was the VERY loud rap/hip-hop music blaring out of some very robust speakers non-stop. Talking was difficult. Yes, I’m an older person, but I don’t begrudge anyone their musical sensibilities… provide its not full of “***** and “nigga” and roaring out at at least 90 decibels. Whatever they’re trying to be, they need to remember that they are l (at 10 am) a restaurant, not a dance club. Food & service: unexpectedly, given the above criticism, the food was outstanding, I mean really good. Caught us off guard. Just beautifully imagined and realized. Would I return? Probably not. Even the great food cant quite overcome the soundscape. Interesting place, though“

“The place where you can eat real soul food“

“This is probably the best place I have ever eaten. The food is magical and makes you wanting more. Ive been telling everyone about this place. The menu is diverse with something for everyone. This has been my new restaurant to take people to impress them. I’ve brought my whole family here. They were extremely impressed and they are a tough crowd to please….trust me. I’ve also had my whole office go out here one night and they were blown away. My friends from out of town told me that next time they come this is the first place we are going. That’s how blown away they were by the food. I can keep going on about how great this place is. Basically if you have not tried it yet run. This is by far the best new restaurant in Providence“

“I came here for taco Tuesday and the food was very good. I wasn't impressed at all with the service. Upon arriving , there was no host to greet even though there was a sign that said wait to be seated. Once the bartender took notice she seated us. Our service was very slow.
We sat outside, where there is plenty of bar and table seating along with indoor seating. I will come again but service needs improvement.“

“TRAFFORDS TESTIMONIAL Perhaps once in a lifetime you find someplace really special for you and your spouse. Seven years ago we went to Trafford’s for the first time. What we remember about it was how it made us feel. Both of us work hard in our professions and to go out to dinner and find wonderful food, excellent and attentive wait staff, and relaxed environment simply made our day. We then came every month at least once mostly twice to enjoy the excellence and serenity at Trafford. Sadly we lost this when the fire occurred for several years. Then absolute joy when Trafford’s reopened and we found the same wonderful food, wonderful staff in a simply beautiful rebuilt building. The joy we felt and the absolute calm and serenity is all back for us. Recently we celebrated my 76th birthday at Trafford with my entire family. It was amazingly special for me and we had our special event upstairs with the entire place devoted to us . Chrissy our server did an awe inspiring service for us making it perhaps one of the most special birthdays I have ever had I have attached a picture of this special moment. I work in the computer software business doing quality assurance 10 hours every day. Being able to calm down and relax completely at Trafford’s is simply a joy for us. “Ordered the Juevos Rancheros. The sauce was EXCELLENT, the cotija cheese was EXCELLENT, the beans were EXCELLENT, and the corn tortillas were the BEST Ive ever had! Pretty sure they were homemade. The only issue I had was the tortillas were on a side dish where Im used to having the eggs, beans, sauce etc on top of the tortillas! Still excellent!
Also came with plantains which were very good, Im just not the biggest fan of them.“
