“Fig's Corner – A Second Visit That Completely Changed My Mind

This was my second visit to Fig's Corner, located on the corner of 30th Street and Figueroa. My first visit was about two years ago, and it was actually my first time ever trying hot pot. Unfortunately, I made the rookie mistake of taking a bite too soon and burned my tongue, so I never really got to appreciate the flavors. Because of that, I left feeling unsure about the experience.

I'm glad I decided to give it another chance because this visit was completely different.

The restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere that's clean, modern, and welcoming. The service is simple but efficient. They hand you a menu with checkboxes, you mark everything you want, and the staff brings it out to your table.

To start, I ordered the cucumber salad, and it was fantastic. It was crisp, refreshing, and tossed with what tasted like chili crisp, soy sauce, and other flavorful seasonings. I also ordered the lamb skewers. They were small, but they packed an incredible amount of flavor. Every bite was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned.

For my main dish, I ordered the Signature House Beef Hot Pot, and I can honestly say it was one of the best soups I've ever had. The rich, savory broth was absolutely delicious. It came loaded with different cuts of beef, beef meatballs, quail eggs, tofu, mushrooms, vegetables, and several other ingredients that blended together perfectly. It was also served with a bowl of steamed rice and vermicelli noodles on the side, making it a hearty and satisfying meal.

To top it all off, I tried two of their specialty drinks: the grapefruit jasmine tea and the peach jasmine tea. Both were outstanding. The drinks included popping boba that burst with flavor in every sip, making them some of the best specialty teas I've ever had.

Overall, this second visit completely changed my opinion of Fig's Corner. Everything—from the appetizers to the hot pot and the drinks—was fresh, flavorful, and memorable. If you're looking for an authentic and delicious hot pot experience, I highly recommend giving Fig's Corner a try. Whether it's your first hot pot or you're already a fan, this place is absolutely worth visiting.“

“I’ve been coming to Yamaya for years, back when dinner was the reason to visit. The quality of the beef has always been solid and while I still think places like Manpuku are a little more memorable, Yamaya has never really disappointed me.

These days, though, it’s lunch that keeps bringing me back. In a city where fifteen dollars barely buys a sandwich, Yamaya somehow serves one of the best lunch specials in the South Bay. It isn’t trying to impress you with theatrics. It simply gets the fundamentals right.

The yakiniku is grilled just enough to pick up a little char without drowning in sauce. A few thicker pieces can be slightly chewy, but the flavor is consistently balanced. The salad is simple, the miso soup is comforting even if it’s usually closer to warm than hot and then there’s the rice.

The rice deserves its own paragraph. Perfectly cooked, unlimited refills and paired with unlimited mentaiko and house pickles, it’s the kind of combination that makes you slow down and wonder whether another bowl is really such a bad idea. It’s simple food executed with enough confidence that it doesn’t need to hide behind unnecessary complexity.

The service has been a little inconsistent over the years, but on this visit it reminded me why hospitality still matters. Our server was warm, attentive and genuinely welcoming without feeling rehearsed. The restaurant was calm, a Japanese family chatted quietly at the next table and for an hour lunch felt refreshingly unhurried.

Is this the best yakiniku I’ve ever had? No. Is it one of the best values I’ve found in Los Angeles? Absolutely.

Some restaurants chase spectacle. Yamaya earns repeat customers instead. That’s a much harder thing to build. One of the lunch deals I recommend most often in the South Bay.“

I went in blind I work nearby and I love hot pot, I walked and was helped quickly even tho there was only one guy helping a whole family - I only had 40 mins for lunch but he got me everything except for water but i forgive him bc he was so busy lol anyways the broth was tasty and I got the beef omgggg it absorbed the broth and melted in my mouth. I’m sad I didn’t have enough time to enjoy my food since I was on my lunch but I would definitely go again :)“

My Japanese friend recommended this place, so I knew it would be legit but it’s quite mind-blowing. The Boba teas are good my daughter loves the Taro flavor. It's affordable and they provide a generous amount of food.“
