While I don't believe a chef's nationality strictly dictates their capability—by that logic, only French people could cook French food—the scarcity of these traditional spots made me search even harder. That extra effort led me to Toshi Sushi in Gardena, and it was entirely worth it.

I have visited twice now, both times for Saturday lunch. A huge plus was that it wasn’t overwhelmingly busy, allowing for a remarkably peaceful and relaxed dining experience. On both occasions, the ingredients were incredibly fresh, and every plate felt meticulously prepared. They even garnish the dishes with beautiful Hawaiian flowers, which the staff thoughtfully let us know are completely edible.

Sometimes, hyper-traditional spots can be a bit too conservative with their portions of wasabi and ginger, but Toshi Sushi provides a generous amount. It’s a smart, necessary adjustment to cater to the American palate, and it made the meal much more enjoyable without the need to constantly ask for refills.

However, the exact moment I knew this place truly cared about quality came down to a single, overlooked detail: the soy sauce. Real soy sauce should always be refrigerated to preserve its true flavor profile, yet countless sushi joints leave it sitting out on tables at room temperature for weeks, simply topping off the bottles. At Toshi Sushi, the second we placed our order, they brought out a chilled bottle of soy sauce straight from the fridge. Absolute respect. That standard alone speaks volumes about their discipline.

“A friend who frequents this establishment brought me for lunch today with another friend. Being a vegetarian I was impressed by the selections I would love to try. I ended up ordering the salmon, scallop, spinach cream pasta with capers. It was delicious! My friends ordered the pork katsu and hamburger combo and it looked awesome. The portions are so generous and it comes with soup and salad for the combo and mine came with a small salad and homemade bread. And the family run restaurant is very service oriented, friendly and a very clean and comfortable place. Highly recommended“

The answer was either the teriyaki bowl or plates, and the teriyaki burgers.. I got the teriyaki chicken bowl.. it looked and smelled great driving home.. After eating it, I didn’t understand the line of people waiting.. It was okay, but in my opinion, no big deal.. I tried the satay shrimp for the first time after a regular suggested it to me. Omg it was so good! Seriously, I might be hooked.

It's also worth mentioning that the egg rolls are a must every single time. ALWAYS Hot, crispy, and delicious!!!

The veggies they bring out with the pho are always fresh and crisp and the perfect portions. It's the ultimate comfort food on any day!!!

The tempura was fried perfectly—light and crispy, and honestly comparable to what I’ve had in Japan. The teriyaki steak exceeded our expectations, and the tonkatsu was really good too.

The seollungtang rivals that of hanbat without having to go all the way to korea town and they serve other things which i always wanted from hanbat. “My absolute favorite Japanese-Chinese restaurant in town!
Umemura truly feels like “町中華” — a warm, family-run neighborhood Chinese restaurant just like in Japan. Their Umani Ramen is hands down the best ramen in California… maybe even in the entire US. That’s how amazing it is!

I also love their Kanitama Chahan (fried rice topped with an imitation crab omelet). Everything is always super fresh, flavorful, and authentically prepared. This place is loved by all my Japanese friends, Japanese American friends, and even my American friends — everyone falls in love with it!

The servers are kind and friendly, and the cozy atmosphere makes every visit feel comforting.

“We’ve been coming to this Japanese-style pasta restaurant for over 30 years. The chefs are very dedicated to preparing delicious food. Even though we no longer live nearby, whenever we crave it, we still drive over to enjoy the same delicious flavors.“

Definitely a good dish to share. I ordered the soybean paste stew with the boiled pork combo and the pork was so tender and soup was very flavorful!

The side dishes are also so good, the kimchi is always the perfect amount of fermented and sides are the perfect amount of seasoned.

We always come to this restaurant when we are in town, been coming for a couple years now and will happily continue to patronize this establishment. “My partner and I arrived a few minutes after opening, and were seated immediately. It does seem like they prefer reservations, but they were very accommodating and sat us immediately. We will definitely be booking a reservation the next time we visit to make sure we have a seat just to make sure we are able to be seated. It does seem to be a popular spot among Gardena locals.

We ordered several dishes: sea bream sashimi, assorted sashimi, grilled black cod with salt, duck breast, boiled bamboo shoots, pumpkin boiled in fish broth, and pickled Japanese cucumbers. We had an Orion beer and dry sake to drink. Everything was served quickly, and absolutely delicious. Our total was around $135, not including the tip we left. My only regret was not taking photos of the dishes to share.“

“Update: I used to love and recommend this place but idk whats going on and its sad, the broth which is the main point is always 50/50 now. When its good its really good but when they miss sometimes its flavorless or super sweet as opposed to originally packed with flavor and all around balanced on bone flavor, spice herb packed, and sweet. Please follow old recipe or something. Still the pork spring rolls are a must have with the peanut sauce no matter what!“

I assumed it would be a dessert or some kind of special touch, so I was excited and waited for that perfect ending and birthday picture to capture the experience I had planned so far in advance. Unfortunately, that moment never came. Our waiter completely forgot, brought us the check, and that was it. No birthday acknowledgment, no dessert, nothing. I know it may seem like a small thing, but when you spend months planning a special evening, those little details matter. I left disappointed in the one thing I had been looking forward to most. My tip reflected how the evening ended. The food and drinks were absolutely wonderful, but I wish the experience had ended on the same note it started.“

The fish are all fresh, and the omakase dinners are great as they add special sauces to each fish so it isn’t just normal sushi. We ordered the 12 piece dinner, we got a small house salad, two appetizers which included a soy sauce butter mushroom dish and a seaweed salad with octopus and conch. The meal came with 6 nigiri pieces and 6 sashimi pieces. Price is not the cheapest, but it makes sense because of how fresh and how high the quality is.“

“Solid, reliable Korean eatery specializing in stews. This is nearly a trusty stop for lunch after an evening of drinks and staying out later than usual. I’m a fan of the spicy beef broth w noodles (pasta) - it looks volcanic spicy but it’s more on the savory side.

Have been coming here for some time now and the food is consistent and the service always quick/efficient. Recommend giving it a try if you’re in the mood for a stew/soup. The dumplings are solid as an app.“

“Here we go again! Another great experience!!!!! 9/5/2026 pick-up time approx 4:12 pm. I didn't get the lady's name but my thinks the receipt said Cindy.
My daughter and I just left from picking up our call in order. When we drove off, my daughter said, oh my God she was so nice. To which I responded, she really was. My husband usually does the ordering and pick-up. The last time I was there a couple of years ago, another lady was so kind and I had to leave her a review, as well.
