“Gum Tree Shop & Café is a small café and shop just a short walk from the Strand in Hermosa Beach. It’s been around for a while and feels very much like a local neighborhood spot.

Parking was easy right out front, which made the visit even more convenient. The café has outdoor seating, and you can sit with your coffee and feel the ocean air, with a steady flow of people and dogs passing by.

We ordered at the counter and had coffees, avocado toast with fruit, and a breakfast burrito. The food was fresh and straightforward, and the service was friendly and efficient.

The attached shop is a nice addition, with a thoughtful selection of home goods, cookbooks, and small gifts — an easy place to pick up something for a birthday or housewarming.

It does get a bit chilly in the morning, so bringing a light layer helps. Overall, a reliable Hermosa Beach stop for a casual breakfast or coffee after a walk along the beach.“

“I don’t have a single bad thing to say about Cafe Bonaparte!! My boyfriend and I are spending the weekend in Hermosa for his birthday and we’ve come to this cafe 3 times and we plan to come again before we leave. Everything was so so good. The bacon, egg and cheese croissant literally made my eyes roll back. All of the pastry’s are fire. Everyone who works here is super kind but especially this one girl (kinda tall, body tea, blonde hair w/ low lights??? And black claw clip). I don’t know her name and clearly don’t know her at all but I could just tell she was a girls girl. She was great and her vibes were amazing. Okay love you bye🤍“

“I met my friend for breakfast yesterday morning at 8:30 am. Since it was so early, we were able to grab a four-top table on their patio, just outside of the open-air, stylishly beachy restaurant.

We both ordered coffees, a latte and an Americano. She had the overnight oats bowl, which looked delicious and filing, and I had the avocado toast on sourdough. So fresh and good!

The staff were very nice and friendly, and this is a great, laidback place to have breakfast.

There is a large parking lot in front of the restaurant; paid parking only.

I will come back and bring my boyfriend! Great location across the street from Venice Beach, too.“

Got their email with the new seasonal drinks including this Orange Blossom latte that I just have to try. Ordered it from home on their app as I head out for work yesterday, get there, head straight to the counter, it's not there. All good, I'm only 5 mins away, I see it's already packed in here this early in the AM, so it's just not ready yet. I sit to wait... tick, tick, tick, time goes past, commute out there's getting worse, time to clock in's getting closer, where's my coffee? One of the baristas calls me up to the counter and she's like: What'd you get? I tell her and she says I don't have a ticket for that. I tell her, No I ordered it on the app. I go to look, and Dang, still unpaid in my cart. Line at the counter's long so I reorder on the app right there on the spot, go sit back down. Tick, tick, tick... tick, tick, tick... Girl calls me back up to the counter: I still don't see your order... No, you saw me order it. Pull it up on my app and Fuuu, I ordered it for Hill St in DTLA, this is Slauson. I look up and she says: Don't worry about it, you don't have to drive all the way over there, I gotchu. I dropped $5 bucks in their glass tip jar on my way out. Ain't no way Starbux up the road would've done that. I wish I'd gotten her name, but if you're reading this, you have no idea how much you made my morning yesterday. Thank youuu! And that OBL was so good.“

“Lovely place. Unfortunately for us, we've been passing this restaurant by for years, as there is almost always a small crowd waiting outside for a table. However, today we took a chance, parked on the street near the restaurant & ventured inside. -- The decor is not fancy, but the atmosphere is friendly, light & inviting. And, the smells coming from the kitchen, as well as the custom coffee drinks was enticing.
-- Our waitress was very friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, explained several dishes, answered questions we had about drinks, menu options, made solid recommendations, and easily took our orders. -- The drinks arrived fairly quickly, followed a few minutes later by our requested orders. Our meals were hot & freshly prepared as ordered (& had not been left sitting under warming lights.) The items we chose were very tasty, the fresh fruit cups were chilled & appeared to be prepped shortly before the meal was served. Very nice. Long before we had finished eating, we'd decided we would be returning to this hidden little gem on PCH to adventure further into the menu & sample some additional treats prepared by the chef & staff. “I just moved into my apartment in Mar Vista, and I walk to work at Venice Beach. This bakery is on my way and very close to my apartment, so I decided to try it. Let's just say it's now my morning routine before work. The cheese danishes and pretzels are amazing, and the service is very efficient. Everyone is really nice, and there is a blonde girl who works there and she is super friendly. This is definitely a must try for anyone visiting or living in or near Mar Vista.“

At the beginning of our dinner, our waiter mentioned that he was going to do something for my husband's birthday. I assumed it would be a dessert or some kind of special touch, so I was excited and waited for that perfect ending and birthday picture to capture the experience I had planned so far in advance. Unfortunately, that moment never came. Our waiter completely forgot, brought us the check, and that was it. No birthday acknowledgment, no dessert, nothing. I know it may seem like a small thing, but when you spend months planning a special evening, those little details matter. I left disappointed in the one thing I had been looking forward to most. My tip reflected how the evening ended. The food and drinks were absolutely wonderful, but I wish the experience had ended on the same note it started.“

“Visited this establishment for the first time on a busy Saturday morning. Excellent vibe and welcoming staff!

​When one of my food items never arrived, I went inside and saw a 40-person line. I flagged down Steven M. at the espresso machine to see if he could point me in the right direction. Instead of passing the torch, Steven took full ownership of the situation. He was exceptionally polite, coordinated directly with the kitchen and register teams, and resolved the issue with a great attitude. This was NOT his job, and he did it all professionally with a smile. ​Customer service like Steven’s is rare.

“So much to say… but ultimately, Colossus in Long Beach is WONDERFUL!! The BEST BLT I’ve ever had. Because they use high quality ingredients! Their Soft-Scrambled Egg Toast is divine. And everything is beautifully fresh. I love their country bread, baguettes, olive cumin bread, dinner rolls… but I have so much more to try Their pastries are scrumptious: Pecan Sticky Bun, Cardamom Bun, Kouign Amann, Financier, Marzipan Croissant, Sea Salt Brownie, OG Chocolate Chip Cookie. It’s all amazing and I’ve brought a number of friends to show off this incredible Belmont Shore Bakery. On Friday nights Colossus serves pizza into the night. Again, high-quality ingredients make their pizzas delicious. Plus they have interesting and unique combinations. They are tip free because their starting wage is $21/hr. Great customer service. Cute little space with some lovely specialty spice mixes, food items, merch, and wine. Indoor and outdoor seating, and they serve tasty coffees and teas. Colossus feels like a little bit of Europe on 2nd Street.“

“Long layover at LAX but want to go outside away from the crowds and airplanes for an hour or so? Get an Uber and go here! (after Covid of course). You could also take the Beach Cities Express shuttle to Manhattan Beach, but almost none of their restaurants are RIGHT ON the beach like this one. Before going here, make sure your cellphone works because you'll want to catch an Uber/Lyft back to LAX because bus service is not good. If you have more time, walk to downtown El Segundo it's cute and easier to take a taxi or bus from there back to LAX.“

“We stumbled upon this little café by chance while driving from the airport — and what a hidden gem it turned out to be! I honestly envy the office workers who get to have this place nearby every day.

It's a small café, but everything they serve is top-tier culinary art — the sandwiches, coffee, and salads are absolutely delicious. And the soups… just wow! We tried the pumpkin and broccoli soups — both incredibly tasty and nourishing. My 7-year-old son usually won’t touch broccoli, but he loved their broccoli soup and ate it with great pleasure.

We've only been there a couple of times over the past year, but it’s definitely on our list for every future trip to Los Angeles. Can’t wait to come back!“
