“I met my friend for breakfast yesterday morning at 8:30 am. Since it was so early, we were able to grab a four-top table on their patio, just outside of the open-air, stylishly beachy restaurant.

We both ordered coffees, a latte and an Americano. She had the overnight oats bowl, which looked delicious and filing, and I had the avocado toast on sourdough. So fresh and good!

The staff were very nice and friendly, and this is a great, laidback place to have breakfast.

There is a large parking lot in front of the restaurant; paid parking only.

“Ordered the off-menu Pomodoro pasta and it did not disappoint. The tomato and petit basil sauce was bright, fresh, and perfectly balanced. The wax beans were a standout - snappy and bright with serrano chile, toasted hazelnuts, and a tangy Frenchie vinaigrette. The garden lettuces were crisp and well dressed with radish vinaigrette, fresh dill, walnuts, and shallots. Good vibe, happy staff, great mix of flavors. The orange wine pairing tied it all together. “I came across Playa Provisions when in town for business. It was a short Uber from the airport, so I figured I'd give it a try. This place is an absolute gem! It is a unique setup that has everything you'd possibly need from morning until late at night: Cafe in the front for coffee and fresh baked good, as well as full breakfast menu. Later in the heat of the afternoon, take a break from the beach (right across the street) and enjoy hand scooped specialty ice cream cones and shakes. Oh look, it's dinner time... and Playa Provisions opens their dining room and bar, some of the best, most relaxed ambience you'll find for miles around. But don't let the casual setting fool you, this is some incredible, elevated cuisine. Chef owners Nick and Brooke (who you might recognize) crafted a menu that's I've been eating my way through, and have yet to find a dish that's not delicious. You've been eating and drinking all day, and are exhausted? Don't leave yet! Wander into the back 'secret' whiskey bar, (Grain Whiskey Bar) and enjoy hand crafted cocktails from award winning bartenders (no, literally), in a gorgeous wood laden atmosphere. I consider myself a foodie, and try as many different restaurants and cuisines as I can. And yet, Playa Provisions remains my favorite restaurant in LA (and that's saying something, considering the amazing places in LA). Run, don't walk, to Playa Provisions. You'll thank me.“

A chef stepped out with a dish and was taking photos outside, and on his way back we asked if it was new. He offered us the plate and told us it's coming onto the fall menu in a couple weeks. Super fun to try a new dish. We spent a couple hours of hanging, munching, and working here... will return!“

“After our Altadena house burned down, we relocated to Barker Block and absolutely love being so close to Manuela. We used to have a fire table like yours, so dining here always carries a sense of home. Last night we brought friends, and they said, ‘This makes it hard to go out to eat in Monrovia—our restaurants cut corners with cheap ingredients and fast turnover.’ What your chefs create is the opposite: dishes with not just incredible flavor but extraordinary texture and detail. Their expertise is off the charts, and I highly recommend.“

“Tonight we, my husband and I, with our dear friends, the Crays, dined at Tomat for the first of what will be many times. The restaurant features a dining room and a roof top patio. A welcoming, comfortable space. The staff were all friendly and very knowledgeable about all menu items. Our server Miley took excellent care of us throughout dinner and dessert. She assisted us with choosing items that would pair well with each other. She was never too busy to stop to see if everything was to our liking. She brought the chef to our table so we could let him know personally how much we enjoyed his creations. He gave us a bit of background on his plan of sustainability and creativity for his restaurant. The food was amazing. We had several appetizers. The tuna carpaccio was amazing, light and dark tuna with the freshest tomatoes. The welsh rarebit was so delicious. The weiser melon with strawberry kimchi was a delicious surprise. The house milled saffron rice was amazing. Our mains did not disappoint. The trout and chips were excellent. Everyone at the table said “best trout we have ever had”. The vegetable chips were outstanding. The vaca vieja ribeye was perfectly cooked. The pork three ways with chamoy was also perfectly cooked. Dessert was madelines, warm from the oven, with the strawberry sorbet and the saffron ice cream. All were outstanding. Overall, this was a fabulous dining experience. Great food with great service in such a comfortable atmosphere. And, we have already made reservations for next month!“

“We had a very nice dinner here inside on a Tuesday night. I loved the whiskey cocktail which is brought smoking to your table. We shared the cheese plate and gen ceasar and the servings are quite large and perfect for sharing. The BBQ scottish salmon is a real standout and the fries and blistered spinach great sides. They also have a very nice selection of wines by the glass. The staff is very attentive and we enjoyed the night thoroughly.“

Was in Hollywood for a conference with a few colleagues and we were all craving Indian food. A colleague's friend told us, go to Badmaash, you will not regret it. The name got me curious. Badmaash is Hindi for naughty, so we had to try it.

Even the Uber ride was fun. The driver, a Syrian immigrant who runs his own VIP car service, was a lively, chatty guy and somewhere along the way asked me for a garam masala recipe. I gave it to him and he was super thankful. Giving out garam masala recipes on the way to an Indian restaurant, the cephalic phase of digestion was already in full swing.

Walked in and the first thing I saw was Sharifon ki Nagri written on the wall in Hindi, which means City of Angels. Naughty in the city of angels. I couldn't stop smiling.

We ordered papdi chaat, onion pakodas, cutting chai, saag aloo, aloo gobi, dal tadka, chicken wings, chicken biryani and kulfi. I stuck to the vegetarian stuff. The chaat was average but the pakodas were crispy and done right, like the ones from a shop in north India where the guy does nothing else. The aloo gobi hit me the most. Exactly how my mom makes it in a typical Punjabi household, jeera tadka, no tomato, nothing complicated. Just simple. Dal tadka was the same, simple and good. Saag aloo was low on oil and very lightly flavored, done just right.

I don't know the chef and didn't get to meet him or her, but I want to say it, you are a master of your craft. Running a modern, smartly designed place and still keeping the food this simple is not easy. I have no idea where the name comes from, but my guess is someone who loved the owner called them badmaash. The food tells that story. If you are in the area this is a must, even for an everyday meal.“

“Backbone was an incredible dining experience from start to finish. I started with the tuna tartare, which was incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and had an amazing balance of flavors and textures. From there, I had the corn agnolotti, which was easily one of the highlights of the night. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the delicate, flavorful sauce complemented the sweetness of the corn beautifully.

For my main course, I had the steak and fries. The steak was cooked perfectly, incredibly tender, and packed with flavor, while the fries were crispy and seriously addictive. Everything on the plate worked perfectly together.

I finished with key lime and scoop of coconut sorbet, which was just as impressive and the perfect ending to an already fantastic meal. Every dish was beautifully presented and tasted every bit as good as it looked.

What made the experience even better were the people. Every employee I interacted with was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The chef was also incredibly nice and personable, which added such a special touch to the evening. You can tell there’s real passion behind what they’re doing, both in the kitchen and in the way they treat their guests.

The attention to detail at Backbone really stood out to me. The atmosphere was stylish and inviting, the service was exceptional, and the entire meal flowed perfectly from one course to the next.

Backbone is absolutely a restaurant I’ll be coming back to. From the tuna tartare and corn agnolotti to the steak, dessert, and amazing hospitality, the entire experience was outstanding. One of the best meals I’ve had in a while and an easy five stars. Highly recommend!“
