I honestly didn’t have any expectations for an udon place because I’ve had udon at the Marugame Udon chain and expected something similar. Let me tell you that this place elevates their udon to the next level. The mentai udon was easily one of my favorite meals during my trip to LA. The sauce was creamy, savory, and sweet with the perfect balance. The umami from the mentai and shrimp complements the sauce so well. It wasn’t too rich and was just right. “What can I say? This neighborhood sometimes doesn’t feel like home but it’s places like Joy that really help change that. First of all the cashier is attentive, the servers are friendly, fast and efficient. This place has amazing staff and food. The prices are also reasonable and their menu is relatively easy to understand. I had the joy special which came with an appetizer, small soup and a sandwich and iced tea. I chose the pork belly sandwich and it was so delicious the bread was so soft and I wanted to buy a roll of it. I also got the wonton soup which was so flavorful as well. I wasn’t a fan of the seaweed salad but everything else exceeded my expectations. I want to come back to try different menu items but this place is definitely top tier. The price is lower than most pho places in 626 but the meat portion is less. It makes me satisfied that I was able to finish the bowl though. The proportion is just perfect for people who just want to feel satiated. The service is great! The man who serves there is always smiling and friendly to their customers. He even explained that they don't put MSG on their broth which is even better for me! If you want to try the Oxtail Pho come early because they sold out at night. “If you haven’t been here before the setup might be confusing. You should head all the way to the back, go to the cashier, tell him the number of people, get a table number from him, and then get a bowl and start putting stuff you want in the bowl. The bowl is weighed and charged by the pound, but you don’t pay until you’re done eating. Then you hand the bowls to the cashier to order what type of soup you want. They hand you order numbers and you go to your table and just wait for them to bring you food. You can also make sauces at the sauce station. When you’re finished, bring your bowls back to the front and pay.Also note that you get one tong for picking up all the foods, so if cross contamination is a concern or you have food allergies, this might not be the best place to go.The lady in the front was not helpful and just shouted Chinese at us and acted like we were in her way for not knowing the rules. Some of the customers tried to help us too, but they should really just post the rules outside the store or in front of the front door to help newcomers. I think if you look East Asian, they will assume you speak Mandarin, so you should mention that you don’t speak it to clear the air. The rest of service was fine and nice, just the initial confusion didn’t feel very good.“

Clearly a big focus on deliveries, but there's plenty of tables. We each got a steak banh mi and WOW was it good! I would come here right after they open to dodge the wait. I overheard roughly 30 minutes wait when I was leaving so not sure how bad it could get. If i was to return I just get noodles straight up, I feel like the other stuff just distracts from the main event. Bae couldn't eat hers because she comes from a place (new england) where people say stuff is too spicy because there is PEPPER in the dish. Like, the pepper you have at your house. I cooked a dish with pepper once and her mom wouldn't eat it for that reason.Also the service was good, they actually called us because they were out of something we ordered and wanted to make sure they gave us a refund or something else.Unless you are a monster two people can split one dish here, any dish. There also isn't many tables inside so that is why the wait times get so long. Luckily, we came at a good time and didn't have to wait. However, the portions are a bit on the smaller side for the price. One dish is barely enough for one person. But I guess the size is good for trying different dishes with friends.“

When walking in we were greeted and seated quickly. The place was not so busy for a Friday evening but later more customers did arrive which is a good sign. We were seated and the menu was simple and prices were in the range of other soup restaurants in the area. We got our water and tea quickly and the servers kept our water glasses full. Very attentive staff. My wife ordered the gyoza and the Tonkatsu ramen and I had the Shoyu Ramen. Food was delicious and if you don't like your food too salty, get the more creamier Tonkatsu Ramen. My Shoyu ramen had spinach which was surprisingly delicious.The food portions looked small but once we started eating they were very hearty portions.
