“We decided to try Va de Vi Bistro & Wine Bar after reading about it online. We arrived in the mid-to-late afternoon without a reservation and were fortunate to get an indoor table before the dinner rush.

We started with a Cacio e Pepe Biscuit and wine. I wanted to explore their Spanish wine selection, so I tried all three options in 3 oz pours. We also shared the Beet Salad, made with golden beets, quinoa, and sherry vinaigrette, and the Ceviche Tostadas with mahi-mahi, mango salsa, and avocado. Both were delicious, although my wife managed to claim the third tostada!

For our main courses, we ordered the Paella and Linguine Gamberi. The paella, with saffron rice, seafood, chorizo, and shrimp, was particularly flavorful, and we thoroughly enjoyed the linguine as well. Despite being quite full, we couldn't resist the Dessert for Two, featuring key lime pie and three other small desserts. We managed to sample everything, although finishing it all was another matter!

Service was excellent throughout our visit. Our server was attentive, kept our wine glasses filled, and made sure we never waited long between orders. Other staff members promptly cleared our table after each course.

The indoor dining area was comfortable, and the outdoor garden seating looked beautiful and relaxing. Overall, we had a wonderful experience with delicious food, excellent service, and a pleasant atmosphere. We'd happily return.“

“One of the best places to eat, have eaten here at least 100 times and had just about everything on the menu. Everything is fantastic, but do yourself a favor and come here for brunch sometime and get the huevos (egg) taco (or 2 or 3). It's one of the most delicious things you'll ever taste.“

“The fried chicken salad is perfect. No too much sauce, the right amount of texture. I can’t decide if the size of the nugget or the breading is better. I sat at the bar watching the perfect avocados spooned and cut with remarkable speed for how consistently ripe they were. I overheard at leave 3 people talk about how incredible the burger was, the woman next to me said she “was speechless”. They are pulling this off w/o a grill or a flame or a timer. By sight and very fast. The casual atmosphere is friendly.“

“Nach drei Wochen „Roadtrip“ durch die USA haben wir uns gefreut dass in der Nähe unseres jetzigen Hotels dieses Restaurant/dieser Biergarten ist. Gut zubereitetes, ehrliches Essen. Ich bin selber leidenschaftlicher Hobbykoch in Deutschland und muss sagen: gut, wirklich gut. Das Sauerkraut könnte ein wenig „knackiger“ sein, aber es war trotzdem lecker. “I am slowly working my way through the whole menu the sea bass was excellent today so was the salmon my friend enjoyed I've had the braised beef and we both had the chicken tenders we will continue to enjoy what is offer especially those new items that just came in. chef Raul and the crew know what they're doing very lovely outing every time“

“This is a small, friendly, casual cafe in downtown Berkeley. The menu is extensive (although not SOS-free, if that matters to you) and the dishes are fresh and well-prepared. They were quite busy when we were there but managed to provide excellent and quick service. The portion sizes are good - it's near the University and there were students there when we were. We all look forward to going back again soon.“

“Excellent banh mi, & must try the smoothies! Tasty, fresh, and not too sweet (no added sugar). They come with soy milk by default (high protein for the lactose sensitive). I really enjoyed the lemongrass beef banh mi. Note, we went here in the summer and it was pretty warm - we stayed for about 30 mins.“

“A new contender for the best kalamata olive bread (4/5 Green Stars). It’s Day 3 of Shelterfest, sponsored by Coronavirus, and I was feeling kinda satisfied (i.e., less guilty than yesterday) after making an earnest attempt to work remotely. So I took myself off for an afternoon stroll and, landing in the vicinity of College and Alcatraz Ave, decided to pick up some bread if there was any to be had. La Farine was quiet and there was plenty of bread left, even at 4 pm. (So pop in to support them if you’re in the area!) I usually get their rustic baguette but this time bought a loaf of olive bread. The servers were super friendly and one asked me if I wanted some free pastries. Ya-ha I did! I scuttled home with my bag of goodies and heated up one of the freebies – a chocolate croissant (toaster oven, bake for 3-5 min). The croissant doesn’t look that amazing, I have to admit, but it tasted wonderful. Buttery, flakey pastry and just the right amount of good quality chocolate. Later I had the bread – I’m a big fan of Semifreddi’s Kalamata olive bread so the bar was pretty high. I have to say that it was up there with my favorite bread – it was a little fuller than the Semifreddi’s loaf, but that wasn’t a bad thing as I sometimes feel that I’m eating a lot of air with the latter. In summary, I can’t believe I’ve never reviewed La Farine before because I’ve gone there many a time. I recommend the three things mentioned above and also their Irish soda bread is really good and pretty authentic. I just found out that La Farine started out in this location in 1977 – almost as old as I am, said Bilbo. I'm also giving La Farine 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: • It seems that they use conventional white flour and organic whole wheat flour. • Their website is lacking on information on ingredient sourcing (compared to, say Acme). I’d like to know more about their flour, eggs, butter, chocolate, etc. • La Farine donates leftover products to area food banks and senior centers • They also support Bay Area schools and other local causes • Their bags are made from post-consumer recycled paper and printed with water-based inks. • Most of the menu is vegetarian and some of the breads are vegan. The Posole Verde is the best I've ever had, Haurache Asada will out you into a joyous food coma, the Caldo Tlapeno is a go to anytime I need comfort food, and there are so much more here. “Walked in on a Tuesday evening and the thin-crust pepperoni looked textbook — almost translucent in spots, with the cheese browned just right at the edges from a gas deck oven. The sausage came fennel-forward and crumbled, not pre-formed, which made a noticeable difference with each bite.

Prices sit around $17-18 for a 14-inch specialty, which is fair for the quality. The counter service was quick and patient, even when I asked for half-and-half toppings. The seating is simple — a few booths and tables with a clean, uncluttered vibe. No gluten-free crust here last time I checked, just the regular dough and a solid sauce that leans slightly sweet.“
