“This was a great lunch spot! We stopped in around 3pm on a Friday. An employee greeted us when we walked up to explain how everything worked. It's an entirely outdoor restaurant. The tables on the exterior look out into the central square. There is a ton of seating. You order your food at the counter, get a number and your drinks and sit down. People will come by to give you napkins and utensils.

We ordered a Park Burger, a beer and a double chocolate ice cream sandwich. The burger was cooked medium well (as I requested) and it was delicious! They put pickles and onions on the side. There was a generous portion of french fries to go with it as well. The beer was quite large (12oz I believe) and cost $9. The ice cream sandwich was rather small and cost $8 but it was plenty sweet to satisfy a craving.

When we were ordering, my husband couldn't decide on which dark beer to get out of two choices, so the person taking our order offered him a sample of each before we finished our order so he could choose one. We were really impressed by how friendly and charming all of the servers were. My husband and I unexpectedly decided to split the burger, and someone came by and gave us another plate to help split the food. I really enjoyed my experience here. If we lived in the area, we'd definitely be back! Great San Diego lunch spot. Highly recommend.“

“We are regular customers of South Beach. We had dinner last night (Jan 21st) around 6 pm. Service and table were fine. I chose the Voodoo shrimp/sausage dish off the special menu. It was sub standard and had little shrimp or sausage. Watery and really not remarkable. First time we ever had a bad meal. Usually anything you pick is magnificent. Spent 240.00 for a below average meal. Just thought you should know. Thank you.“

“The best spot for a beer after a nice walk by the pier! And, if you are lucky, like we were, you can get a chance to listen to bands rehearsing for the evening event at the Rady Shell. The service was great, we didn't get food... but everything smelled delicious, and the atmosphere and the views were amazing!! Must check it out if you're looking for a relaxing stroll by the ocean.“

“First time visiting, and I came with a friend around 7 PM on a Tuesday. Parking in the area was a bit uncomfortable due to the large number of homeless individuals nearby, and there was a strong odor on the street while walking in, which immediately took away from the experience. Unfortunately, with the restaurant keeping many of the windows open, those smells carried inside as well, making it hard to fully relax and enjoy a meal.

The restaurant itself was also very cold, so we had to move around to find seating away from the open windows. That said, once we settled in, the food itself was actually good. I ordered the black bean burger, and my friend ordered a “naked” cheeseburger wrapped in lettuce. We both enjoyed our meals.

The fries are ordered separately, so both got a large order to share. The portion size was generous—almost extra-large—and the price was very reasonable. We ordered the garlic fries with truffle Parmesan cheese shredded topping, and they were definitely a highlight.

Overall, the food and value were solid, and I would recommend it to first-time guests who want to try it out. Personally, due to the atmosphere and overall comfort of the location, I don’t think I’ll be returning—but I’m glad I gave it a chance.“

“Great little dive bar in Ocean Beach. Stop in for a cheap adult beverage and enjoy hanging out with the locals! I definitely felt in the minority here as a tourist but not in a bad way! The staff was welcoming as we're the patrons. I cannot attest to the food as I didn't eat but it looked and smelled great! Fans are running to keep you feeling cool even with the heat!“

“the food is always excellent very well priced inconsistent Even the salad just smells fresh even with no dressing on it. Lots of variety. Even their iced tea is freshly brewed there. Full bar which I don't drink much but looks like it's got everything anybody ever want. Fun to watch the airplanes with Jets take off your right on the runway this place has been here for years and years and years not sure how long but it's kind of a San Diego landmark. The hostess wasters has been there for a long time, always willing to assist you in your little quirky special request. I should remember her name but I'm so bad at that. “Very chill restaurant where you order at the counter, order your food and pick your seat. Liked how most entrees came with a side. Got one of the burritos with ranchero sauce on the side and fresh fruit and also got the scramble with fruit too. The ranchero sauce and salsa were good and the portions of both entrees were very good as well. The burrito fillings couldve been seasoned better, but it was packed with eggs, carne asada, and a little bit of beans. Loved the variety of fruit, appreciated it wasnt just melon and it was all sweet. Wasnt too packed for a friday morning so that was nice. They do add a 4% charge to every check which is written on the menu.“

“We only recently learned about Sal's Cantina and we were eager to try the food. The space is great (which is shared with Rosemary & Thyme in the morning), especially the very comfortable outdoor garden patio. Sal was very friendly and provided great, attentive service. And the food was delicious! I ordered a birria taco, a pollo asado taco, with beans and rice. My friend had a birria enchilada (not on the menu, but Sal fixed it up for us). All of the food was fresh and great quality. We also were greeted with complimentary chips and salsa, which was a great starter with our passionfruit margaritas. One high note, all of the food was lightly salted, which is something I very much appreciated. It's easy to add salt if you want more, but too many restaurants over-salt, and you can't do anything to lessen that after the fact. We will definitely be back!

Parking: Sal's doesn't have any dedicated parking. You can choose from metered parking along University Ave, or look for free street parking along the side streets. Pretty much the same for many Hillcrest restaurants.“

“I am so grateful that the locals shared this gem with me. The Smoking Gun has a very generous happy hour from 3 to 7 on weekdays, and the best hamburger in town. They call it the Butter Burger, and it is delicious.

The staff is friendly and attentive, and it is quite the gathering spot. I think they have a late-night happy hour as well for the people in the industry. It's sort of a sports bar with great TVs, pool tables, and ping pong. It's an absolute must when you're in San Diego. I love me some Smoking Gun XOX“

“This place is most certainly a dive bar in all the best ways. I heard they had amazing fried pickles and it did not disappoint. Probably some of the best fried pickles I’ve ever had. I also order a small nacho to go, I don’t know what they put in their “spicy” cheese but it was so hot I thought my gums were bleeding and I had to abandon the food. It was busy so unless you walked up and stood at the bar it was difficult to get service. They also give you a vibrating tag that lets you know when your food is ready and you have to walk down to collect it. I also heard someone say they do karaoke every day at 7pm.
