California’s Mexican Restaurant has always been one of our family’s top three go-to spots for Mexican food when we’re in town. No particular order — just consistently great food that keeps us coming back.

The portions are generous, the food is fresh, and the flavors are exactly what you hope for from authentic Southern California Mexican food. On top of that, the employees are always amazing — friendly, welcoming, and the kind of people that make you feel glad you stopped in.

If you’re trying to narrow down authentic Mexican restaurants in the Vista area, this is absolutely one you should put on your list.“

“I can't even tell you how many time I've driven past this place. I finally decided to give them a try. Had a chille rellano burrito and some rolled tacos. Loved them. The tacos were crispy and the burrito was very flavorful. The fresh salsas were very fresh and tasty. I like a little heat and they definitely provided that kick. Definitely will be back“

...but it's worth the work to find it!
The barbacoa Taco was one of the best things I've ever eaten!
(It's made from lamb meat and as a Greek, I know good lamb ...and this is some of the best!).
The owner is an absolute sweetheart, and gave me a complementary Aguas Frescas to try. The green one was out of this world yummy!
I will be here many more times.

“This place has amazing food—everything I’ve tried has been incredible. It truly feels like a home-cooked meal from a grandma’s kitchen. You have to come try it! They serve pozole, tamales, birria, caldo de res, and caldo de pollo. The homemade tortillas are unreal, especially with their bomb salsa. Don’t miss the champurrado—it’s one of the best I’ve ever had. They also have choco flan and other delicious desserts. Highly recommend!“

“Had a really nice experience during my first visit. I completely misread the menu and ordered a green chile chilaquiles burrito. It’s not a menu item but they didn’t turn down my request or even say it wasn’t on the menu; they just made it! I only realized afterwards that it was not a menu item but the burrito was delicious! All the ingredients were fresh, the rice was very flavorful and well seasoned and overall very enjoyable. I’d definitely go back to try more stuff. It was really nice of them to make me an item that wasn’t even on their menu and the staff was very friendly and welcoming.“

“Food is amazing. I don’t speak much Spanish but I speak food. I always have the aguachile rojo or viejon tostada. The coctel is great too but probably for two people/servings. Tacos are huge as are the burritos. My husband always gets the asada tacos and burritos. A burrito is basically two portions.

The ambiance is honestly the best part of this place for me. You always have what seem to be old friends or family seated next to you picnic-style. The woman I’ve always seen there working brings out consome while you wait and it’s so flavorful, warm and soothing. It’s next to a liquor store so grab a pacifico and enjoy. There is Mexican music playing that’s popular and everyone knows and tonight the woman who was cooking was singing to herself and it was infectious joy for my casual date with my husband. Very wholesome and fun.

The service is prompt and the food comes out to you fresh. I’m not a regular by any means but I am really going to miss this place when I move out of state.“

“We’ve been going here for about a year. The food is absolutely delicious. My favorite is their carne asada. It’s a casual environment that is fun, clean, and elevated. While they have TVs showing games they’re not too loud so you can still have a conversation. They have large glass surround for the kitchen so you can see them make your food fresh. Everyone is so kind and smiling. They literally put your drinks on ice before they give them to you?! Exceptional service and food. Grateful for this local gem.“

Surf & Turf Fries is an absolute must-try! This dish is a genius fusion of Mexican flavors with a hearty American twist, and it completely blew me away.

The portion was huge, making it great for sharing (or not—no judgment here!).

What really stood out was the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The shrimp tasted buttery and well-seasoned, every element worked together in harmony, creating a mouthwatering experience I’ll definitely be coming back for.“

“I’ve been coming here since they opened. This place is my favorite. This is not a typical Mexican taco shop, if you’ve never been PLEASE ORDER THE GORDITAS and if you’ve already had the gorditas ORDER THE CORN QUESADILLAS. Literally. (With a name like ‘La Gordita’ how could you NOT order a Gordita?)

Hubby orders the flour carne asada quesadilla it’s good it’s his thing he likes it (what I enjoy is that somehow the meat isn’t dry and somehow lasts him two meals), it’s night and day to the beef corn quesadilla though. The quesadilla is essentially the Gordita just different shape (half moon) and it’s melted cheese with sour cream (in addition to the typical Gordita toppings). The beef is the absolute best for quesadilla or Gordita but be warned it’s wet so don’t order to go, eat it there. Sure I look like a monster when I’m eating it but it’s so delicious once you start you just can’t stop. I know they have other items on the menu, I think my husband mentioned these are the best breakfast burritos he’s had (flavor wise). I literally go only for the beef corn quesadillas now, the masa is crunchy the melted cheese and sour cream with the meat juices and the lettuce make it oh so yummy and you have to add the salsa (I go for the green one). Anyway if you went there and got a burrito or rolled tacos it’s like you didn’t even visit the establishment, the quesadillas are crack, the gorditas are bomb. When I lived close by I would have to restrain myself from visiting all the time but honestly I will still make the drive for the beef corn quesadilla. If you’ve ever been to this establishment and did not get the corn quesadilla, give it another shot-you might just become their next addict.

This is not to say that their other food is not good, I’ve seen my parents try the huaraches, tacos, etc. I can assume that the flavor is there and they’re bomb too but it’s like coming here and not getting the corn quesadilla would be like cheating on it. I try to not eat out much so if this is my one shot I’m going for the absolute best. Maybe if someone feels as passionate about another item in their menu as I do about the beef corn quesadilla I’d probably give it a try. The service is fast, the food is delicious and I hope anyone visiting gives the beef corn quesadilla a try-you won’t regret it!

Edit: I can eat two gorditas(I’d be stuffed), but I can realistically only finish one corn quesadilla (I can finish 1 and a half but hate throwing food away so I stop at 1), I would assume other folks could easily finish two corn quesadillas though. The quesadillas are slightly bigger than the gorditas albeit different shape.“

“I was just looking for a wings place, I did not expect such a varied menu. I ordered the carne asada fries, the chipotle fries, buffalo wings, and a carnitas quesadilla. Everybody loved their food!

I had the quesadilla and this may be my second favorite carnitas. Well seasoned, soft, and not oily. I also had some of the chipotle fries. Everybody was right, they were amazing.

It's criminal that there wasn't a line out the door. The prices were reasonable and service was very quick. We definitely will be visiting again.“
