“The best little wicket pub with such an atmosphere and a great bartender. Was there on a Wednesday afternoon got some GF tots and my daughter for the country tots and the husband for oysters and some top shelf whiskey! So much fun and some really great people. Can wait to head back!!!!“

“Wow, a top New York City type restaurant in Newport. Forget the losers comments from years ago. Dress like you’re going first class. Atmosphere here is awesome…2nd floor is special. Drinks are reasonable and delicious. Our server PATRICK WAS AMAZING. They explain specials and drinks. Most attentive and all foods were perfectly presented. Wanna another drink, ask and within 2 minutes it’s there. We had wild mushrooms and salmon that were incredible as appetizers. Caesar salad was fresh and lettuce crisp. Scallops special had my wife shaking her head. My seafood linguine was overflowing with fresh seafood. The dessert of “Snowball from Hell” can be shared. Our 54th anniversary was unreal. The fries and mussels with curry sauce is my new favorite dish and I had this dish a week ago and I’m pretty sure I’ve thought about it once a day since.

“We had a wonderful dinner during Restaurant Week. Without question, it was the best combination of value and we experienced. The $30pp 3 course meal was delicious. We had mussels and crispy tuna eggroll. For the main we had cod/polenta puttanesca and pasta w/white clam sauce. Both big servings and cooked perfectly. Dessert was crème brûlée and gelato. Service was friendly. The only negative was the noise level, a little loud and close. Still a very enjoyable evening. We will be back.“

“We found Scales & Shells while meandering around Newport, it is convenient on Thames St. We were very pleasantly surprised to find some of the best lobster bisque we've had, with a rich creamy broth & big chunks of lobster. “This was the BEST RESTAURANT we went to in Newport!! All of the seafood dishes were excellent, fresh and tasty. If you’ve ever been to the famous Oyster Bar in Grand Central station, this place is just as good. Definitely NYC prices for oysters $3.50/ oyster but that seemed to be the average price for a lot of the places in Newport.

The scallops were extremely fresh, sweet and perfectly cooked. Also highly recommend the linguine pasta with calms, along with the lobster bisque. The bisque has HUGE pieces of lobster and was the perfect appetizer. For drinks and dessert, recommend the mojito and the chocolate mouse.

“Our meal was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced for seafood. We were pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of seafood in our pasta and quesadilla dishes. The service was outstanding, but what truly made our experience exceptional was the care and attention given by the General Manager, Rhonda. She went above and beyond to ensure our child—who has severe allergies, including shellfish—was safe and felt included in our dining experience. Rhonda took the time to mingle with guests and has a fantastic rapport with everyone. Her presence truly elevated our visit. We didn’t have a reservation, and the restaurant was quite full, but they still managed to accommodate our party of five within a few minutes. Overall, a wonderful experience we won’t forget!“

“They were able to accommodate me on a busy weekend, even let me choose my seat even though I was alone and they had people continuing to arrive. The hostess and waitress were friendly, the food was delicious (pesto shrimp pizza), the view was nice as it's right on the water, and I chose a table that allowed me to see it properly. The band I was particularly happy about- I thought they were fantastic- they played early rock n roll, and I wish I asked their name.

It's a really relaxed atmosphere, not fancy, think old patio furniture. My table was not steady and rocked when you moved, the chairs were plastic, but I didn't mind. If you want a good meal on the water and are not picky about that, I'd recommend this place.

“We came in Sunday evening for a small dinner and dessert and sat at the bar. The bartender was attentive and filled our drinks quickly. It was pretty empty when we got there but packed when we left. The food was AMAZING. We shared the short rib special and it was so good! For dessert we had the chocolate mousse and bread pudding which were also sooooo good! The restaurant itself was beautiful. “The food here was delicious! We were a bit disappointed that they were not able to accommodate a group of 5 to sit by the window despite the fact the restaurant was basically empty. Most of the tables by the window were for 2. They could have easily pulled up another table. Instead we were seated in a semi circle type booth which isn't ideal for a fancy dressed up dinner and having to scooch in and be stuck unless you're on the end. The food was amazing so I will be going back but the service throughout the night was subpar at best.“
