Anson Restaurant 12 Anson St, Charleston American • $$$

“My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary having a “staycation” in downtown Charleston. Our plan was to put our name in at 167 but the wait was just too long. We stopped at a few bars and looked up local restaurants and landed on Anson, which had a reservation available for 2. We’d never heard of the restaurant but the reviews spoke for themselves. We had such an amazing time. The atmosphere was great. We put down that it was our anniversary on the reservation form and the team at Anson went above and beyond to celebrate - an amazing upstairs table, and a bit of champagne, berries, and whipped cream to wrap up the meal. Peter, our waiter, could’ve sold us on just about anything on the menu. We went with the she crab soup, shrimp de johnes, blackened snapper, and the filet with bone marrow butter. Every bite was incredible. We’ve found our new favorite place in a city full of “the bests.” Thank you Anson!”

They were perfect, you could not improve these dishes, absolutely impeccable. Lastly, we ordered the Duck Fried Rice with a poached egg; it was so luxurious. It was crispy, fatty, savory, and just a great indulgence. I will never forget this meal. Thank you 167 Sushi Bar for your mindful menu, and perfectly executed food.”

“High Cotton is one of the more prestigous locations to enjoy brunch (as well as lunch or dinner) in historic Charleston (note: it's part of the Hall's group of restaurants). At the corner of East Bay and Cumberland, it is comprised of four large rooms three of which have lots of natural sunlight while the fourth is a bar in the interior with dark wood paneling trim. The menu offers a pleasant mix of Southern style brunch classics (Chicken & Waffles, Shrimp & Grits and the like) but you are paying a bit of a premium for the name and location. For our meal, we started with yummy Cinnamon Rolls in a skillet (very taasty and sweet, especially the center portion), then a Brunch Burger (excellent... really like the egg, meat, bacon, cheese and sauce mix togther surrounded by an egg brioche bun...the only way to have a burger), and the Crab Cake Benedict (also very good).Service, as you'd expect, was professional, friendly and on point. We had an additional pleasure to know that we sat in the exact same table as Ryan Gosling and Rachel Adams did in The Notebook (it's the small 2 person round table in the corner facing East Bay and Cumberland Streets). Nice...and we had no clue about it when we arrived, it just so happened. Enjoy!”

Beginning with checking in with the hostess, my husband was greeted with birthday wishes from every member of the staff that we came across, punctuated with a signed card waiting for him at our table. The only reason I did not give the food a full 5 stars is that my main course arrived extremely over salted. They were very quick to redo the dish, accompanied with multiple apologies. “I love the coffee I make in my own kitchen- and I also savor the 20 min or so sitting at home drinking my delicious coffee in the morning before I get into my day. It takes a lot to get me to break from that routine. I prefer to meet someone for almost anything else other than coffee- to protect that time for myself in my own kitchen with the wonderful coffee I make at home. That was at least until I tried the coffee at Bottleneck. I had it for the first time several years ago at a local farmers market- the Vietnamese coffee (as another reviewer mentioned is mind blowing). I loved it but I tend to be a coffee purist- don't add anything. I want to taste the coffee. Now Bottleneck comes to MUSC- where I work. I will now forgo my coffee at home for a coffee from Bottleneck. I mostly get the Nitro- cool, black coffee infused with nitrogen. No ice. The varietal changes regularly so I know I am getting a world tour over time. Sometimes I switch it up and get hot black coffee, sometimes iced black coffee. No matter, it's always delicious.”

“Great food, great service, beautiful decor. Be prepared for an unusually loud interior due to hard surfaces everywhere. Marinated olives with orange zest and pizza were awesome. Probably need a loud atmosphere to turn tables because the pizza is so good and so many people order it, but just don’t expect a peaceful atmosphere. In a hurry and want great pizza in a place that looks super cool and feels lively and loud with incredibly friendly staff? Go for it! Sometimes that’s what you want to celebrate something and to keep things upbeat. We prefer to be able to have a conversation and relax, but it’s probably great for young people who are on dates and nervous because they don’t know how to have a conversation yet or people who like drinking at dinner and cackling and hollerin’ at each other.”

Enjoy!”

A little pricy imo, but then again what is’t ??‍♂️.Nothing special about the drip coffee, but it is relatively cheap compared to other stores so that’s a plus.It would be a great place to study, read or have a small meeting. The employee was very nice, recognized it was my first time, and provided me with additional information about the store, ie curb side pick up.”

“We couldn't figure out where we wanted to eat late last night and didn't want to spend too much money since we'd already had an appetizer somewhere else. We walked by here and thought it would be good. The restaurant isn't exactly the cleanest and to food isn't exactly the highest quality that you may be used to in Charleston but it was pretty good, especially for the price. My husband and both ordered a drink and entree and shared a roll, all for about $50. It's almost impossible to get all that anywhere else. I even opted for the duck, which was a thigh portion but I really liked it. The curry was good and the vegetables were fresh. The roll wasn't very fancy but they had some that sounded really good to choose from. At under $10 for a roll, the price was right. Our server was nice and the food came out pretty quick. This looks like one of the hot spots for the college kids, probably because it is so affordable and it's pretty darn good. I'd definitely recommend and if we were local, we would definitely be back.”

“One Dish kept this from being a perfect meal Our waiter, (Dexter), was great. We started this meal with Mussels and frits. The frits was prefect vessel to soak up butter, coconut lime broth For our second appetizer we shared softshell crabs. This crab was served on a bed of corn, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers and gnocchi. The corn medley was so good, I think Nico should incorporate it into their daily menu. If I could do it over, I would have taken the option of adding a second softshell and made this my main dish. The wife's Scallops were perfectly cooked served on top of an excellent coconut rice with snap peas and a green curry beurre Blanc. My Duck L'Orange, was the single miss step in our meal. The dish was a bland and the duck slightly undercooked. Compare the picture I posted with this review, to the picture on Nico's Facebook page, and it is clear this isn't the same dish. We finished with 2 deserts: Mine was a very nice Crème brûlée that was fired table side.”

Uniquely fabulous combo of the sweet-savory-slightly spicy wings and a smooth and savory blue cheese sauce. And then there's the Vietnamese Coffee. Amazing. I exclaimed about it out loud.”

“This is a cute, friendly, and intimate Pakistani restaurant in the historic area of Charleston. It has a cool and cozy vibe, with dark lighting and colorful decor. Service was very engaging and friendly, and the server was helpful in helping us pick some dishes we hadn't heard of elsewhere. The food was delicious. We'd planned to share the aubergine pakora chaat appetizer, but our night they were substituting yellow yams and kale, so we switched gears and got the masala bhel, which was fantastic - spicy and flavorful, especially with a little tamarind chutney and raita. For entrees, we had (of course) butter chicken, which was as good as any I've had anywhere, and chapli kabab, which is ground lamb patties cooked in a tandoor. My wife loved them. All in all, it's perhaps the best South Asian food in or around Charleston.”

“Do yourself a favor and eat here! I happened to locate Bearcat on a whim and my wife and I decided to eat here for our 1 year anniversary. From the food to the cocktails, there was not one item that we disliked. We started with the Grilled Oysters, Smoked Maitake Mushrooms & Duck Liver Toast. The oysters were perfectly cooked and had an incredible earthy/savory taste. The maitake mushrooms were tender with a hint of smoke & the duck liver toast was point blank the best I have ever had in terms of quality, texture and taste. We then moved on to the Hamachi Crudo, Crab Rice & Pork Belly. My wife could could not get enough of the Hamachi Crudo & Crab Rice with the uni hollandaise. The pork belly was perfectly cooked with a fantastic amount of fat cap that made it melt in your mouth. For cocktails, please do yourself a favor and order the "That's My Jam" as every sip will make you feel like you are biting into a PB&J (if you are into that thing). Thank you again Bearcat + crew for making our 1 year anniversary dinner nothing short of perfect!”

“There are places you go to eat and the food is good, the service is attentive, and the atmosphere is perfect. Then there is Muse in Charleston…We mulled over the menu for maybe 20 seconds when Donny dropped in on our table (after checking in with regulars, ensuring people saw the step on the way in and greeting total strangers like they were bffs) and altered our evening from a nice night out to a next level experience. He asked us about any dietary “stuff like allergies, vegan-“Me: “yup, we’re vegetarian.”Donny: “I’m getting you the Fettuccine Carbonara but I’ll make sure there’s no meat. It’s what you want. Anything to start? The beets and carrot plate is amazing. How about wine?”Me: “Red…”Donny: “I got you.”I haven’t tasted a pasta dish like that. Ever. Everything is prepared in house (including the fresh noodles), the wine was on POINT and just order the Beets and Carrots. Donny would approve…Donny: “dessert?”My wife: “we were thinking about it but we can’t remember the menu” (cuz we hardly even saw it!)Donny: “Trust me? I got you” and capping (until then) our Muse experience with Pomegranate Liquor soaked ladyfingers topped with a pistachio crumble alt-tiramisu apres’ unlike any dessert I’ve tasted. Now for the amazing part: we leave our credit card behind on the table. I get a phone call/voicemail that I don’t answer/check until 10:59pm. It’s a lovely woman from Muse informing me about our card saying the close at 11pm. We fly out the next morning… I call them, crossing my fingers.Donny answers, problem solves really fast by way of “I’m swinging past your hotel on my way to drinks with a buddy who’s in town. You’ll never know if that true, but I’m dropping off the card anyway…” So I run downstairs and three minutes later, he’s jumping out of the car with a take-away box grinning “you didn’t think I’d come empty handed, did ya?!”Donny, you made our trip. Thanks for being a rad human, serving tasty food and for the extra slice of pistachio heaven. May we all channel a little more of THAT in this world.”

“Blind Tiger has always been one of my go-to spots in that area for lunch, or a weekend drink in the courtyard. The food is always consistently good, and the service never disappoints. The only downside, sigh, is that over the years the cheese curd portions went from "dang, how the heck can two people eat all this" to "hmmm, it costs more, but now it's a tiny side dish now, so get your own". Supply chain, inflation, who knows, but at least we all know that cryptocurrency will save us and make the cheese curd price inflation less impactful.”

“The only reason I’m giving this 4 stars is because I was a frequent customer and their food was always hot, delicious, and fresh!!! I am also giving it 4 stars because the owner fully refunded me after I didn’t receive my food and he/she clearly knows how to treat people who patron his restaurant. I was a little early for pickup, so I understood that my food wasn’t ready. But there have been times where I have done the same and it was, so I didn’t think anything of it. The manager at this location told me that I would need to go through Chow Now who I originally ordered through. Ok, understandable. AFTER I left and contacted Chow Now, they called and she told them she will only be issuing me a partial refund because my fries were ready and not my sandwich. She failed to tell me this in person, “because she’s not gonna sit up here and argue”. Yet proceeded to just that almost blowing out my ear drum out with all her yapping like a rabid dog! The fact is, she knew exactly what she was doing. In fact, the other young lady at the counter told me they were just starting on my order, so of course I’m going to think nothing was ready! I didn’t make a fuss, nor was I angry because it wasn’t their fault that I was early. I just simply asked for a refund. After finding out that her intentions was to never fully refund me. I called up there and spoke with her in what started out as a calm conversation. She then got EXTREMELY rude, raising her voice, and started yelling and over talking me. Very nasty! Worst customer service I have literally EVER received and as someone who has been in customer service for years, this experience was mind blowing. I live far from this location but I come here for work and planned on bringing my kids here to enjoy food and ice cream one Saturday because it’s seriously one of the best locations quality wise and because our location closed down. But it’s safe to say I won’t be a returning customer. I don’t do well with nasty and mean managers who talk to people like they don’t care if they receive their business. Good luck to that lady, because one day she will talk to the wrong person like that! Thank goodness I have changed, I almost drove back up there and asked her to speak to me just like she did over the phone but she isn’t worth it and never will be. I hope whatever she brought on her shoulders to work with her today, gets better! Because she’s usually really sweet, I don’t even have to ask for condiments because she’ll make sure they are in my bag. Sad. Thank you to the owner for refunding me fully. And to the General Manager for taking care of this on my behalf. Blessings.”

Our table was a high top in the main area between the bar and kitchen, two oddly shaped tables that were too small for three adults, food and drinks. You can expect the per person cost to be $50+ if ordering a drink and shared appetizers for the table.”

Virginia's On King 412 King St, Charleston Southern • $$

“Virginia's on King was excellent! As visitors to the area they won my award for best fried chicken. Although I'm not a local so you can only trust me so much. But truly everything we had was delicious and hearty. Cooked to perfection and delightfully tasty.Service was quick and staff were kind. The restaurant itself was simple, cozy and clean. I wouldn't hesitate to tell you to go eat here! If you can trust a tourist... Enjoy!!”

Eli's Table 129 Meeting St, Charleston Fine Dining • $$

“This place is a gem! When it says they are pet friendly, it is no joke! The staff and the manager were so kinda to us and our two dogs! We only stopped in to get a snack and a drink to get out of the rain but we found a place that we will go back to anytime we have our dogs downtown and need a bite to eat!!! The fried green tomatoes were some of the best I’ve ever had! The ahi tuna special was amazing! Omg and the coconut cake! Do your pups and your stomach a favor and check this place out!”

Oak Steakhouse 17 Broad St, Charleston Steak House • $$$$

“My sister came to town to visit me for my husband's 3rd anniversary for his passing. And since we never got a chance to eat here. I gave it a try. Food was good. Our waiter Sam just wasn't Attentive to us, like what I am use to at a high scale restaurant. So it makes me not give 5 stars. The manager checked on us and thanked us for coming in.”

Rodney Scott's BBQ 1011 King St, Charleston Barbecue • $

“This place is TRUE southern BBQ! Delicious. When I first moved to SC, all I could find was mustard base sauce (which I HATE), until I found Rodney Scott's place. So happy we tried them! It was strange having to go to the counter to order, but heck it saves money....no tip. Lol. All I can say is the food was awesome!”

“First time diner, and was extremely impressed! I loved the vibe of this shop as soon as we walked in. The menu is unique, and packed with flavor! Had the porcini rubbed prime rib with mushroom conserva and it was heavenly. We also ordered sides of the rotisserie drippings roasted potatoes which tasted like they were right out of your grandmas best pot of stew, and the cremini mushrooms that were delicious! So happy we found this spot!”

“Just visited this deli for the first time and the food is absolutely excellent. The bread is fresh and the meats were delicious. Very high quality sandwich and I absolutely plan on going back. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. The store is full of various imports so it was fun to browse while I waited for my order. Definitely will be back to try some of their homemade polish sausages. 5/5”

“Went by for pastries for the weekend. Not at all sad about it!! While I truly enjoy good pastries I don't like anything too sweet. I got a pecan bar which was delicious and not sweet as pecan pie- thank goodness! Would get it again. The pop tart was fun. Never cared for those in the store or other bakeries but liked this one. The coffee cake was Devine! I love cinnamon so was excited there was a lot of cinnamon in it. Now, I got a whoopie pie expecting it to be too sweet. Started eating it before I got out of the parking lot and almost went back for more but I had other treats to eat. Thank goodness I don't live nearby! I will be making the drive many more times though! Excellent experience!”

The Bomb Bar 466 Savannah Hwy # B, Charleston Health Food

“I LOVE The Bomb Bar! This place is so cute and cozy. It is really beautiful inside, and a great place to hang out to get some work done. The location is extremely convenient and Ive never had an issue with parking even during peak hours (next door to HYLO) Staff is always quick and friendly. The smoothies are fresh and delicious. They add their own house made almond butter and The Bomb Co Blender Bombs which really helps keep me full throughout the day. Also, you can never go wrong with their OG Avocado Toast. Sooo good! Definitely check this place out!”

Checkers 3690 Ashley Phosphate Rd, Charleston Fast Food • $

“Food quality is to be expected but I don’t like the robot that takes your order. For the average person they won’t know how to talk to the robot to get their order correct. Especially since there is no sign in how the robot will expect to take your order. But overall everything was good. Would highly recommend a screen that shows you what you ordered at the very least.”
