50 Best Sushi Bars near Kensington

“When people say a place is 'a hole in the wall', it can go two ways. In this case, it means intimate, small and you hope it's not crowded when you go because there are more fans than seats.

We got lucky, and went before (5pm) the crowd flooded in immediatelyafter we ordered. There was only one Hamachi Kama in the house, and we were the fortunate ones to have tasted it. It's clear this fish wasn't previously frozen, (if it was, they knew how to mask it) it was flaky, super fresh and flavorful.

Each piece of the Kensington roll was SO large, I'm embarrassed to share a photo of me cramming it in my mouth, because it was impossible to be graceful.

The beer with a hint of peach was a must try, it perfectly paired with everything we ordered.

All of the great reviews of how good this place is, were true, including mine.

“We've been here twice and enjoyed it both times. The sushi was fresh and well made, and the Hey Girl roll was our favorite. We'd order it again in a heartbeat. The flavors were balanced, the presentation was beautiful, and the portions felt just right.

“We celebrated my brother’s birthday here, and it was our first time dining at Akikos. We had one of the best omakase experiences and would highly recommend it!

The atmosphere feels luxurious and perfect for a special occasion or fine dining experience. I loved seeing how the entire staff worked together as a team, and the chefs were very detailed in explaining each dish and how it was prepared. The nigiri was exceptional, with noticeably high-quality fish and ingredients.

We also met one of their hostesses, Shaina, who was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and made our experience even better.

Overall, it was definitely worth the price. We had such a great experience celebrating my brother’s birthday here, and we would absolutely come back!“

“The customer service is outstanding and the quality of sushi serves were delicious. The Chef prepared the plates well. I don’t think I can return to a regular Japanese restaurant after this experience. 😁“

“I think the 4.7 Google rating for this place is too high. Four stars is more like it. The food was mostly good, but there were a few items that were not so great. We got the sashimi sampler. The barracuda and tuna sashimi were excellent and flavorful even without soy sauce. The aji and sea bream sashimi were fine, but had less flavor. The yellowtail sashimi was downright sour and not fresh. We also ordered some small plates. The agedashi tofu was very nice. The grilled scallops featured an impressive presentation (scallops in their shell cooking in a bubbling broth over a small fire that died down right when we finished the dish) and a tender texture, but ultimately the taste was bland. The assorted tempura was fine although I thought the batter could have been lighter. The house salad was large and fresh – a good deal. We finished with some skewers – shrimp, chicken, zucchini, and mushrooms. The skewers ranged from solid to good. Beyond the food, we thought the service was friendly and competent. The atmosphere, however, left something to be desired. The restaurant reeked of cleaning fluid and the floor was sticky.“

“While pricese were a bit higher than I expected for the portion size, the quality was surprisingly good for take-out sushi. We spent over $60 on two omakase selections, 1 tiny uni don, 1 tiny toro don, and really small seaweed salad.

I wish they sold the scallop nigri a la carte because that was one of my favorite omakase items! Also liked one of the salmon in the omakase better than the other salmon (it looked like 2 different salmon were used). Husband raved about the toro pieces in the toro don and I enjoyed the uni don.“

“This was a surprise dinner my friend invited me on. The hand rolls are so fresh and delicious. I had 5 amazing rolls that come out one at a time for freshness m. The server was super sweat and helped me pick out what I wanted. The menu does also have set options, but I decided to do individual rolls. I definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in the Oakland area.“

I ordered a caterpillar roll, Fortune roll, Giants roll and a Sake avocado making roll. Everything was delicious and I want to return and try so other items. “Cute location in Northbrae, friendly and family oriented location. Sometimes you're lucky and find parking in front, don't park at the grocery store across the street and walk over. The wait for a table is never long, I usually come in dinner on a weekday so there's no wait. Weekend dinners can be a 10-20 min wait, better than many Japanese restaurants. The wait for your order is short too, the ost I've waited was a little less than 15 min. The food is great, the portion is great, the prices are fair, you can be happy with several appetizers to save money. A mixed vegetable tempura plate and house salad is filling. Everything is a win here, haven't had a bad meal yet.“
