“Went here for a somewhat large family gathering. While not the best Mexican food I've ever had the quality was good. Every one in the group seemed to enjoy their meals and my steak burrito hit the spot. Margaritas were pretty good too. Staff were friendly and attentive.
I would suggest you guys take orders at the table like a normal restaurant instead of making us go up to the front desk and order. I get that you are probably short staffed but getting our group of over 10 people to the front of the restaurant and ordered took way longer than was necessary, and we ended up making other customers wait while we got everything sorted.
While I don't mind paying for my meal before I eat it, if you are paying with a credit card it means you have to tip before receiving service, which just seems backwards to me (a tip should be a thank you).
Would go back again.“

“Good food, good service, and an excellent value. I've been going to this place for over 20 years and the staff know me very well. The salsa bar and fresh chips have always been a nice perk that set its apart from other places which have come and gone. It's always busy around lunchtime and parking lot can packed but they get orders out quickly. I usually get my food to go but dining in is a pretty comfortable experience. They've steadily upgraded the interior over the years and recently got all new tables/chairs.“

“The food is delicious. I love to get their beans, green rice, super fresh tortillas, guacamole and their delicious slaw! Everything tastes very fresh and flavorful! My husband also loves their Brussels sprouts. It is one of the few places in Marin that caters to omnivores, vegetarians, vegans, and people who are gluten free! The service is always great and I love the atmosphere with the well spaced and comfortable booths! They make a great margarita!“

“I came with my family here, very clean place, clean restroom, clean everything, good food. Fast service, but please ladies from the front (customer service) smile, you take care of the customer like robots, next, thank you , next, thank you next. I was looking at every single person that was receiving their orders to make sure that chips are given to some odres or to every order. We order two burritos, one pupusa and twelve tacos. We did not received chips at all. I saw people that purchase tacos , receiving their chips, this wasn’t my case. No one gave us our chips😟“

“Wow! This place is great. We had the Chile Verdi Plate and a salad with shrimp. The plate was a good size portion and both were delicious. I loved the vinaigrette dressing on the salad and the flavor on the shrimp. We’ll be back to try more- in saw the nachos as we were leaving and they looked devine.

The outdoor area was really pleasant as well. We had a very good meal here.

Edit to add- both the grilled chicken burrito and the butternut squash burrito were fantastic. The squash had a delicious char to it.“

“First Time Bite at La Chulada's Cantina - Pleasant Surprise!

I am not sure how long La Chulada has been in downtown Novato. I'd passed by the location many times, and grabbed breakfast next door, but never walked in. On his visit, however, that finally changed!

La Chulada itself offers a diverse marketplace, but I had my sights set on the little cantina tucked away beside it. Craving a quick bite before heading back to San Francisco, I ordered a couple of tacos: carnitas and "steak," as the friendly counter lady recommended. At just $3 each, I didn't expect much, but to my delight, these were pleasantly surprising!

Let me rewind a bit. This warm and welcoming lady (you know, the one I mentioned earlier) greeted me as I approached the counter. Uncertain about the second taco filling, I mentioned my carnitas choice and asked for advice. "Steak!" she said confidently. Since I only had my phone, she kindly directed me to the market side with my taco slip for Apple Pay processing.

Back at the cantina, I settled into one of their clean, small tables. The lady brought chips, salsa, and a refreshing glass of water, as I had requested. Now, here's where the deliciousness kicked in...

But wait! As I sat down, my eyes caught a small board showcasing the day's specials. Guess what? Birria! Over the past few years, I've become quite the Birria fan, and seeing that missed opportunity stung a little. Oh well, next time, for sure!

Overall, La Chulada's cantina offered a fantastic, unexpected gem at a more-than-fair price. While I missed the Birria this time, the friendly service, clean atmosphere, and delicious tacos left me wanting more. I'll definitely be back to explore their marketplace and, of course, try that elusive Birria!“

So, we decided to try it, and we are glad we did. Our meals were cooked fresh to order and they were delicious!
