“When we sat down outside, with the blue hour sun hanging low across the city, the tray of gluttony and sugars sat so perfectly on our tray. Then a group of Patagonia-clad men stumbled in saying “with OpenAI” and I was reminded that we’re in San Francisco. The crookie was good, albeit not crispy. While the coffee vanilla mousse looked amazing on the outside, it was a tad too sweet. However, the highlight for me was the Imperial; paired with an iced cold brew, the decadent layers filled with a crumbly bottom and a sweet white filling inside was my favourite.Pretty good!“

“The ham and cheese croissant is the best of ever had in San Francisco. Oh my God. I did get a black coffee which maybe was a mistake, cuz it was not that great. But honestly that doesn't matter. Every single pastry looks amazing, I will be back and will be getting espresso instead of drip.“

“Cute shop with a good selection of pastry. If you’re looking for traditional French patisserie, this is definitely a more “modern twist” kind of place. The flavors of the pastries are delightful but we felt the ham and cheese as well as the chocolate banana were lacking in the texture of a buttery flakey croissant, as they were a bit soggy. Otherwise good spot with good service“

Patisserie on California Bakery • $
6833 California St, San Francisco

“If there is one positive thing came from the pandemic, it is Philippe Delarue’s ingenious idea to open up a bake shop here in front of his flat. It’s one of my favorite places to invite friends on Saturday or Sunday morning. You can’t go wrong with any of his goods, but my personal favorite is the bread pudding. Delarue will generously add his “adults only” whiskey sauce upon ordering. He is too humble to bring up the story himself, but ask him about his journey here – including stints in Le Mans, Paris, London, and Montreal. I can’t locate the article anymore but I think he once had the honor of baking for the queen! ☺️“

“This place is a must when visiting San Fran. I do my research before going on a trip and this place was recommended by a few people. I know that you often hear more about the Golden Gate Bakery but there was a long line and I was not going to wait to try their egg tart. I'm glad I didn't sit in that line. We grabbed a few items to go and of course we tried their egg tart. It was warm and crispy. We also order some gelatin looking pastries, matcha cake, and sweet bread. Everything was great.“

The online portal is more effective at giving you options if you have dietary restrictions, but staff is knowledgeable and efficient. The store is colorful, and the donuts really are unique - you're not going to find the generic ones here.“

“My favorite bakery for pastries in the Bay. And I feel like I've been to a good swath of bakeries and pop-ups in the Bay. (See my Favorite Bay Area Bakery list if you're curious for a list of bakeries and pop-ups that I love or liked and that I don't think are overrated b/c of tiktok/insta.When it comes to technique + asian/fusion flavors that actually come through in the right balance, Grand Opening can't be beat. We're so lucky to have so many fantastic bakers in the Bay Area, and I've had so many delightful pastries, so I was blown out of the water when I first tried Grand Opening. If you are a pastry that likes interesting flavors, and things to not be too sweet, you definitely have to give Grand Opening a try. Some of the way I gauge a perfect pastry is flavor of the pastry dough, is it greasy?, lamination, how the layers stand up to the ingredients, does it highlight the ingredients included? Are the flavors balanced? Does the pastry work as a whole. In all of these areas Grand Opening comes out on top. The flavors are where Grand Opening wins, many times when I'm having pastries, I want the unique flavors black sesame, ube, fruits, matcha, to be stronger or better balanced, I often find that's not the case. Grand opening knocks this element out of the park. They now do pop-ups on Saturdays and Sundays out of Mister Jiu's. Check their instagram for menu + hours.I think their blood orange wife cake is one of my top favorite pastries that I'v ever tried!“

Hahdough German Bakery Bakery • $
509 Laguna St, San Francisco

“Hahdough offers a range of sweet and savory baked goods in a small takeout stand in Hayes. All of the options were authentic and not too sweet. The berliners are perfectly light and airy, with custard filling with just a touch of sweetness. The seasonal one with fresh strawberries is a perfect combination of the airy donut, lightly sweet custard, and fresh slices of juicy fruit. The strawberry jam one is packed with tart jam and really brings the flavor. The Black Forest cake is authentic in that it has that chocolate richness with the added flavor of cherry kirsch, but the texture is light and uplifting rather than heavy. All of the pastries that I've tried have a satisfying flake and distinct layers, and aren't too sweet. The pretzel sandwiches (both ham and mozzarella) options are small but delicious, with the pretzel roll itself so light and chewy, and with fresh and tasty fillings. Overall highly recommend if you're in the area! Just be prepared to take these to go since there's no seating“

“This an Asian bakery. The food was delicious, just not something I'm used to. I could go for it again. I was celebrating a mix of Palm Sunday and Purim when I went. Jews celebrate Purim, which is a celebration of Queen Esther's rescue of the Israelites in Persia. They would go all out in their celebration. My celebration of Palm Sunday was anticipating Good Friday in 6 days, which tinged my celebration with proleptic melancholy. This was lighter and still felt festive. I dined outside. Outside birds are very adventurous there. Some may not like that.“
