50 Best Bakeries in San Francisco

“I can't believe I've lived in San Francisco my entire life and hadn't had Liguria's focaccia until last month. I came in right before 9:00am on a Tuesday and was able to get three slabs of the pizza focaccia ($9 each), which is what my colleague who grew up in North Beach recommended, to bring to the office. It was easily one of the best focaccia I've ever had! No wonder they typically sell out well before they close for the day. I'll definitely be back to try the other kinds. Note: they're cash only.“

“As others have said, it really is good. I got the plain and almond croissants, both had great taste and texture. I don’t think it’s worth the $6 tag for each and the 30-40 min line that I normally see but if you are able to get it fast, I would say try it.“

“The morning sun shines on this neighbor coffee shop. Everyone raves about their cookies, which of course I didn't get this time since there were other baked goods that caught my eyes. The scone, sunflower & pear galette, and granola called for me louder than the cookies. I will be back soon for a cookie and freshly baked bread. “Wildly popular and mostly lives up to the hype! Although, I think the Breakfast Sandwich and the Morning Bun are overrated. IMO, the Smoked Salmon Tartine and the Pressed Ham & Gruyère Sandwich are the can't miss highlights of the menu. The standard baked goodies like the Almond Croissant are also v solid. The big open seating space give me "easy like Sunday morning" vibes that you can keep going by swinging by Heath in the same building or just taking a stroll through the neighborhood.“

“When we sat down outside, with the blue hour sun hanging low across the city, the tray of gluttony and sugars sat so perfectly on our tray.Then a group of Patagonia-clad men stumbled in saying “with OpenAI” and I was reminded that we’re in San Francisco.The crookie was good, albeit not crispy. While the coffee vanilla mousse looked amazing on the outside, it was a tad too sweet. “Historically I'm not much of a baklava person. They're fine, but often too sweet and the texture isn't my favorite. Baklavastory is a different story. Their baklava is perfection, with a light and crisp dough, top quality nuts, and just the right amount of sweet. We walked past and went in on a whim, and walked out with a tray. The owner is very kind and told us about his obsessive process to make the best possible product. We'll definitely be back!“

“This place is the bomb. They know how to make the desserts and they’re not afraid to showcase that! I’ve tried the pistachio eclair and it was so unbelievably good. I am very happy. “Oh my wow!!!! This cake was so delicious and perfection! Not too sweet or sugary. The ingredients are so fresh and organic. We finished the entire cake of 12 servings among 6 people! I’m definitely ordering from here again and they have a location and deliver in San Jose! It’s so pretty too.“

“This has become our go-to cake for our birthdays, and we love it! The chocolate imperial cake is our favorite and it is a chocoholics dream. I never share it with anyone because it so darn tasty!It is pricier than a lot of other cake places, but well worth the money for a special occasion.“

“Ive been going to this bakery since 2018 and it's nice to see that they've grown a lot since. I personally recommend getting the OG pineapple bun with butter hot and fresh. This is truly the best way to enjoy it. This time I got the pineapple butter sampler to try the different butter options available. I love the cute container and size but it would've been nicer if we got to choose the butter options vs. the preselected options they had. One important tip- make sure you eat these buns warmed up/toasted. It makes a huge difference to the taste and turns it from something bland and cold to a beautiful crispy light fluffy bun.“

“Arsicault did not steal his prize for best croissant USA. All the pastries are good without exception, the baguette is also one of the best in San Francisco. So if you are French, you can certainly think that there is better in France, of course... but clearly not in SF. Yes it's a bit expensive but those are the prices. I was sold croissants for $1 cheaper but frankly not good. I'm not giving it 5 stars because I still don't understand why there are no more baguettes at 10:30 a.m. on the weekend, no new batches coming (according to the sellers). When we close at 3 p.m., do we try to have stock at least until 1 p.m.? Finally, it seems to me? It's a shame that you can't order in advance and pick up the next day. That would be great.“

“An iconic dessert/cake that our family has been enjoying for many years. The flavor is amazing- I love toffee crumbles! One slice makes you want more but is enough for one person (considering the amount of sugar). We love to support this local small business in Japantown. FYI- cash only!“

“In a city filled with famous bakeries everywhere, B Patisserie lives up to its reputation. While it's not the "best bakery ever", it's quite good and nothing really disappoints. They have a good selection of baked goods one would expect from a patisserie, and everything was quite good. Tasty kouign amanns and flaky croissants, nothing to complain about. If you're looking for great baked goods without the crazy lines that some other places in the city have, B Patisserie is a great choice.“

“I only tasted the pain au chocolat and the choux and I was won over. The cabbages are super good, the taste is fine and sought after. The pain au chocolat is worth a French one. The place is pleasant and the staff welcoming. Only remark: the tea served in a small half-full mug, a little too light for my taste, even if I am used to European portions.“

“I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!! Krispy Kreme who? These donuts are beyond words of delicious and delightful. I drive from the East Bay usually late night when my husband and I are craving phenomenal donuts. The donuts are extremely fresh, the times I've been here there has been an older gentleman making them and racks of donuts ready to be bought. Yummmmmmm. Just incredible tasty donuts. You can tell the oil they get made in is also very fresh, no after taste of old oil. Donuts are not super greasy. The service is magnificent! The first time coming here the woman was extremely helpful and kind. The second time a young man helped us and he had a great personality and energy. He was telling us some of the stories of the donut place. Really enjoyed his service! The ambiance is an old school donut shop with closed off seating area but looks very vintage. Grab and go type of donut shop right on Polk St. RECOMMEND THIS PLACE 100% :)“

“The flat white was quite good, and best of all, it didn't burn my mouth when I first took a sip. That's how you know your barista is great! I also got the banana bread, which was delicious, as well. All around worth the trip and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town. The only thing is I wish the chairs looked a little comfier and I might be more inclined to stick around and enjoy my coffee.“

“Always a line out the door, I got the fresh beignets and a naked biscuit as I had eaten a big bfast already. The beignets were deliciously light and tasty (fried dough- what can be bad?!?) but I was initially suspicious of the biscuit until I toasted it and spread butter and strawberry jam on it. Heavenly flaky and tasty. Cashier was nice and order took a little longer but the beignets are made to order .“

“Do you know how fortune cookies are made? This fun little visit will show you. A free sample and lots to choose from. I never knew there were different kinds of fortune cookies. And you can get flats ones, too. No fortune, but great with your coffee! They even have some fortunes in French.“

“The buns here are really good. The bread was incredibly soft and airy with such a delectable milky-sweet flavor. Beef curry filling was okay but BBQ pork was excellent. Decent amount of filling, no red dye, and absolutely delicious. Pork floss bun is also amazing if you're looking for something more savory.“

The sea salt sprinkles were a nice touch because it creates a very balanced flavor. I'm in love with the gooeyness and texture of the cookie. “A great bakery house with a wide variety of pastries. I got $12 curry chicken sandwich. The bread is on the hard/ chewy side like french baguette and the filling is flavorful. The other bakeries I got are also noteworthy like the morning glory bread, the tomato basil scone, and the crazy cookie. I would say the crazy cookie is the most satisfying to me. Would love to try more things next time I visit the neighborhood.“

“My wife and I had the pleasure of working with Hahdough bakery to supply the cakes for our wedding. They were wonderful to work with and helped us to pick out the right 4 different cakes. Delivery was seamless and they worked with the venue for a timely drop-off. Our guests could not stop talking about how delicious the cakes were! It was a great way to offer our guests multiple options while being super affordable compared to traditional wedding cakes. Not to mention that the cakes were beautiful (see photos).“

“The cakes are very good. My favorites are their tiramisu and Black Forest cakes. This place has been around for a long time and has been one of my favorite bakeries of all time. I get all my birthday cakes from them. The service is good too. They are so helpful.“

“Belly is pretty lean with not much fat in terms of extras to entice. But what they serve, they do well. It has a young start up vibe with good precious offerings, a limited interesting menu for a bakery that also does lunch. It’s pretty much outdoor seating only sans the shade and expect a line. We are told by the counter staff it takes eight minutes to heat the savory mushroom pie or corn pastry with an egg inside. Everything was tasty.Personally I prefer muffins containing an egg to be soft boiled rather than hard, such as the morning muffin at Post Script on Jackson street which can’t compare to anything else. It was a fun place to try and I brought a couple of cookies home to try. The matcha latte was excellent, sweetened with brown sugar. I like that they use good ingredients on their spare cuisine. I do think they might expand the menu a tad.“

“A cute Russian bakery cum coffee shop in Richmond district. I tried their veg Piroshki and it was delicious. The coffee was also great and I’ll definitely be back for other flavors. Great option if you are interested in exploring some Russian delicacies.“

“Went to a fun chocolate tasting "date night" event at a local chocolate shop in San Francisco. Got to learn more about the effort that goes into every step of the chocolate making process, from sourcing chocolate made from the rare heirloom variety of single origin cacao beans, to the structural integrity of the chocolate, to the creative symphony of flavors and textures. Carol, the head chocolatier and founder of Kokak Chocolates, has managed to bring all of these details together into delicious, fine chocolates and sweets. The chocolate outer layer is made with 70% chocolate. It's very smooth and well balanced. We got to try their most recent batch, called Hearts on Fire, and they were tropical and delightful: -Guava Crisp -Passion Paradise -Cafe Au Lait We also enjoyed a yummy champorado shooter, which is a Filipino chocolate rice porridge. Their brownies were melt-in-your-mouth good.“

“Oh man the egg tarts here truly are the best which is why whenever the bakery is open, there's a line out the door. Literally a line out the door since you can't go inside. It's definitely a unique little shop so know what to expect. What to expect? A long line, pay cash and the owner cracks the door open and gives you your delicious egg tarts and takes your cash!“

“I was very excited to visit Jina on my trip, but I wish they had more interesting vegetarian friendly-options like the injeolmi croissant.The black sesame and matcha cream puffs are pretty classic, safe Asian flavors, and I was very confused by the sweet roti croissant.The lemon sesame wheel was pretty unique, but $10 is pushing it for a pastry IMO.Visited on a Friday morning an hour after opening and there was a small line that moved quickly. All the items were still in stock. Only 2 customers are allowed in the small shop at a time. They take cash and card.“

“I still give this place five stars for their gluten free baked goods and take home lasagna but overall four stars because their service still sucks most of the time. I went by here recently on a Sunday morning before a meeting to grab something hot to eat. I love their hot pockets. However, it was 9:30 am. A number of people around me and I started to form a line. Some people asked the staff questions about the pastries and they answered while putting stuff out. None of the staff thought to tell us that they didn't open until 10 am on Sundays. After about 5 minutes of being ignored, I saw the small sign for their hours. I pointed it out to others and we all left. That was a horrible experience as I was hungry and now didn't have time to get something else before my meeting. On Pi Day, I came by and was pleased they had a number of pies available in different sizes. I picked up a small Chocolate Pie that was low in sugar and a small Cherry Pie. They were the perfect size for the three of us though they could have fed more people. We didn't finish the pies ourselves. The Chocolate Pie was yummy and perfect for me but my husband said it wasn't sweet enough for him. We all loved the Cherry Pie! We went back recently and picked up their pizza dough. It came with two rounds. They were awesome!!! We put on our own toppings and popped them into the oven. They came out delicious. I love their food. I just wish the service was better.“

“Great selection for great prices, but not super differentiated from other Chinese bakeries I have been to. The pastries were high quality and the woman who helped me was super nice. I got an egg yolk custard tart, an egg white custard tart, and a pineapple bun. The egg custard tarts were good, though the crust was more like shortbread and not very flaky which I prefer. The egg white custard tarts were interesting, though I did not like them as much as the traditional egg yolk ones which I found to have a stronger flavor. The pineapple bun was good, but nothing special. I will likely be back to try some of their other items.“

“the staff are super friendly and recommended me their favorites. I got the strawberry matcha croissant which was light and flaky inside with the perfect amount of filling and generous toppings. I can tell it was made with high quality butter as it held together well without breaking into a greasy mess. it also wasn't too sweet and was complemented by the tanginess of the strawberry cream. the financier was not dry and still soft despite being buckwheat based. the menu is super exciting and I will definitely be back to try other pastries (especially the Sunday menu)“

“If there is one positive thing came from the pandemic, it is Philippe Delarue’s ingenious idea to open up a bake shop here in front of his flat. It’s one of my favorite places to invite friends on Saturday or Sunday morning.You can’t go wrong with any of his goods, but my personal favorite is the bread pudding. Delarue will generously add his “adults only” whiskey sauce upon ordering.He is too humble to bring up the story himself, but ask him about his journey here – including stints in Le Mans, Paris, London, and Montreal. “Best bakery in the city! Got my husband a carrot cake for his birthday and it was so delicious, hands down the best cake i've had. They wrote happy birthday on it for me in any color i wanted too. It was $50 for a 8 in cake which fed all 20+ adults and is incredibly affordable when you compare to the chains like susie's. I'll be back any time i need a cake!“
