“When we first came to recess we sat at the bar and we met Dorsey who was the bartender. Who turned us into regulars quickly. Her balance of checking in and giving space while throwing quips is something that has been lost in nearly every restaurant I attend. The art of service is something that is alive and well in Recess. So now my wife and I have been go to Recess every Monday for the last 2-3 years. It is just our spot at this point and it’s hard to remember a time before it. Gainesville wouldn’t be the same to me without Recess. If you like the look of the menu stop in, if you don’t, ask about the specials. You will find something to enjoy. We will see you Monday.”

“I can’t compliment the staff at The Stag enough. We hosted a wedding rehearsal dinner on Thursday night and they executed to perfection. Avalon was a great host and the upstairs event room was beautifully elegant and perfect for our bride and groom. The food was great and selection of drinks were perfect for everyone. Avalon kept me up to date with where the open bar tab was at throughout the event which I greatly appreciated as we had a budget and she ended it below the spot I asked her to. Thank you all for a great event for such a special occasion!”

It’s sort of a sports bar atmosphere, but who cares when the food is so good and so reasonably priced. There are literally no decent restaurants in Gainesville in spite of the fact that it’s a rather large city and has two major college campuses so this is a welcomed addition. Finally, they have a robot that brings you your food during the week. It’s a lot of fun.”

The gravy was smooth and warm with the red hot giving a good amount of spice. Very curious to see what else was offered, I returned a few days later to get a burger to go as is advertised on their sign up front. The burger was surprisingly juicy and delicious. What even more surprising was learning that Mama Ruth’s has been around since 1975! With a diverse menu and friendly customer service, I can see why it has continued to thrive.”

If you're in the Oakwood area and craving some Birria Tacos, TIO LOCO is worth a visit! This nice little spot is tucked off to the side of the BP gas station on Hwy 53 (beside the COOKOUT), right off 985. The address might say Gainesville, but for me, this is Oakwood.

The Birria Tacos here are solid—juicy, flavorful, and sure to satisfy your taco cravings. They of course have your other menu items that you may want to check out, but I've been on a birria kick for a while now ? It's definitely a spot to check out if you’re nearby!

“I live in Flowery Branch but recently took over Auto Fitness in Gainesville and I have been looking for a place just like Sweet Magnolia's. When my daughter visited me for lunch I thought we would try it out and I am so glad that we did. The minute we walked in I thought the place looked great and felt so clean. Made it to the counter and was told that it was family owned an everything was made fresh. We were made aware of the specials, the bread and the soup of the day. I am a Rueben sandwich nut and it's so hard to find a really good, authentic one and they nailed it. Fresh corned beef the right amount of sauerkraut and the thousand island was perfect. My daughter got the Cuban and it was also made to perfection. I understand the importance of word of mouth and reviews and if you haven't been to Sweet Magnolia's you've got to visit, you won't be disappointed. Now that I have found them, it will be my go to when I am craving something healthy (great salad menu) or just a fresh sandwich. Oh, the potato salad was so fresh and great as well. Thanks to this great place for changing the way I will be experiencing lunch, I'll be bringing members of my team here weekly as a reward for their work. Looking forward to coming back. The menu is on a big chalkboard. I told my friend there was no use in trying to translate just order for me. He ordered the Gorditos for me. I also had the cucumber lime water. It is very refreshing. I must admit the green gordito was spicy. I drank a lot of my cucumber lime water to put out the flames. The red gordito was mild. I really enjoyed the food.

“We got there right as the place opened for dinner and were politely greeted. We were seated in a corner booth that was intimate and in a nice little spot for a date, but the table had chunks taken out of it. It was a bit off putting for me not to be able to look around too, but I’m sure if I’d asked they’d have moved us. The table being messed up wasn’t a great impression, though. We were given ice water.
We ordered the Spring Roll & Tom Kha bowl as appetizers. The spring rolls came in a set of 2 & were the same basic generic spring rolls you’d get at many other restaurants- they were quite good. The soup was tasty and made me feel warm & toasty inside.

Masaman Curry is my favorite Thai dish and I try it everywhere I go to eat this kind of food. This one was a winner- the sauce was thicker than I’ve ever had it anywhere. This dish came with a first on the side for me (avocado) and the coconut milk base curry was sweet and mild with a hint of peanut flavor. In it was mixed potatoes, carrot and cashew nuts; I opted for tofu as well. My only regret is that I wish there had been more. It came with a heaping side of rice.
We got the Spicy Basil mild, and the stir fry came our tasting of a grill, mixed with onions, basil leaves, bamboo and sautéed mixed vegetables. I didn’t realize it wouldn’t have any kind of sauce. I asked about it and they advised it comes dry. I hinted at wanting some sort of sauce on the side to my date but he said we have sauce at home and so this dish is waiting in the fridge to be doctored up and eaten (we were full after sharing the other things).

There was Halloween candy at the front of the store. They charged a card fee, which I wish they’d told me about in advance. I didn’t use the restroom there so I can’t attest to that. The service was adequate and they were very nice, but nothing wowed me. The table being all chunked up was kind of yuck too.

Either way I would definitely eat there again- there’s not really any other options for Thai in Gainesville except one other spot with hours I never seem to make. Also the Masaman was really great. I spent a little over $40 which is decent. It was a truly okay experience.

We ordered the all star breakfast, which comes with your choice of grits or hash browns, choice of meat, and waffle. And we order the two eggs and meat breakfast which comes with hash browns, and your choice of meat. It also comes cheese, but we subbed onions and mushrooms. Service was pretty good, our server was fast, and joked here and there. Kept the atmosphere light despite the chaos of customers coming in and out, the cooks and servers, busboys cleaning… overall, a good experience. If you’ve never been to a Waffle House, don’t expect it to be super clean, because they are open 24 hours. But if you’re down for breakfast all day, or a whit bite at any time of the day, this is the spot for you. Great for small or large groups. Till then, let’s eat!”

I had no idea what kind of empanadas I was ordering, I didn't ask the cashier what it had in it. Omg the empanadas were amazing 🤩. The arepas are really good. They have awesome food!!! “From Blairsville, had been by Yonah Burger many times but had not eaten there in several years. Stopped by today on a whim to grab lunch. Burger was good, kind of expensive, but so is about every place else. What really struck me, though, is the friendly greeting, they take your NAME for your order, not a number!..asked everybody ordering how their day was going and how they were, and when everybody leaves, told everybody thank you and have a great rest of your day..that is SOOO rare these days...usually a short, insincere greeting and rarely a thank you nowadays at most places..this place is a breath of fresh air! Will be back..BTW, I remember Yonah Burger as a kid back in the '70's..and I know it has survived at least one fire, and has been grazed by a tornado during those many years..I hope it continues for many more!”
