Oakwood Pizza Box 610 N Person St, Raleigh Pizza • $$

“While visiting Raleigh, we decided to order from Oakwood Pizza Box, and it did not disappoint. The pizza was outstanding—perfectly blistered crust, fresh mozzarella, bright tomato sauce, and basil that tasted incredibly fresh. Every bite had that authentic, wood-fired flavor that pizza lovers look for.

The quality of the ingredients really shines through, and the balance of sauce, cheese, and crust was spot on. Even as visitors, we can see why this place has such a great reputation.

If you’re in Raleigh and craving exceptional pizza, Oakwood Pizza Box is absolutely worth a visit. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in town!”

Ajja

Ajja 209 Bickett Blvd, Raleigh Mediterranean • $$$

“Modernized Mediterranean – A Flavorful Twist to Classic Dishes Restaurant Review: Ajja – Raleigh NC I have been searching high and low in the Raleigh-Durham area for a restaurant that I could truly say has it all, with no reservations. Ajja is the first to fall into this category – from Ambience, Staff, and Culinary Creations – the restaurant has now raised the bar, challenging local restaurants to really push the envelope. Over the past 20 years, I have traveled to more than 68 countries, 33 states, and six continents. Often, the restaurants that truly rank higher are those you least expect. Restaurants that are set in more "local" areas, peculiar places, or just not in the typical outside setting that you would think when thinking of 5-star or Michelin-level culinary experiences. Ajja is nestled in the heart of the Five Points residential area, across the street from old-style craftsman homes. Walking up to the restaurant it presents an inviting local vibe, welcoming friends, family, and couples to come together in an environment where you feel free to talk, laugh, and enjoy the company you're with. The service was on point. The waitress brought excitement, personality, positive energy, and knowledge that allowed us to enjoy the overall experience with our family truly. We started with some of their curated cocktails, followed by a series of amazing dishes, including the Trout Dip, Ajja Mezze Platter, Sweet Potato & Peanut Masabacha, Charred Cabbage and Broccoli, BBQ'd Short Ribs, and the Whole Fried Trout. Rather than going dish by dish – my broad overview is that Ajja has taken some classic foods and really pushed the envelope with flavors and ingredients that create a culinary journey in your mouth that goes beyond amazing. There wasn’t a single dish that disappointed, even when combining flavors that you wouldn’t necessarily think would work well together. If you're looking for a culinary experience that truly makes the evening unforgettable, you must try Ajja in Raleigh!”

Poole's

Poole's 428 South McDowell St, Raleigh American • $$$

“My friend and I ordered and enjoyed a lot of food: - Pimento Cheese w/ Fried Saltines - Roasted Beets w/ Pickled Kumquat, Siano Burrata & White Balsamic-Thyme Vinaigrette - Baguette w/ Cultured Salted Butter - Crispy N.C. Shrimp w/ Marinated Newly-Dug Potatoes & Pickled Ramp Remoulade - Roasted Airline Chicken Breast w/ Herb-Scented Whipped Yukons & Smoky Triple Chicken Jus - Macaroni Au Gratin (the best I’ve ever had, at least four unique cheeses. If you don’t order this Mac ‘n Cheese, that’s your fault!) From the moment we walked in, I knew we were in for something special. The rainbow “Don’t Forget Kindness” window etchings, the upscale modern yet retro decor, the attention to detail, and then learning the history, dating back to 1945 — it’s all so impeccable! Oh, and a fantastic cocktail. The 1806 — Orange Infused Bourbon, Brulee'd Brown Sugar, Bitters! Suffice it to say that I will make it a point to be back, often 🏳️‍🌈 Highly recommend!”

Dampf Good BBQ 6800 Good Hope Church Road, Cary Barbecue • $$

“I first tried Dampf BBQ many years ago when they were still out at the fairgrounds, and I can honestly say it has remained the best and most consistent barbecue I’ve had both in this state and across the country. I’ve traveled extensively during my military career, which has given me the chance to try some truly great barbecue spots nationwide. Even with all that experience, Dampf BBQ is still my number one. The meat is always incredibly tender, packed with flavor, and cooked with the kind of care you can taste in every bite. Beyond the food, the people here make the experience even better. This is a dedicated, family-owned, local business that clearly takes pride in what they do. I’ve seen comments about wait times and pricing, but in my opinion, anything truly good is worth waiting for, and anything made with real quality is worth paying for. I drive an hour just to get this barbecue, and I’ve never once been disappointed. It’s consistently excellent, every single time. If you’re on the fence… don’t be. It’s 100% worth the trip. Give it a shot.”

Mr. Keith on the grill absolutely nailed it. The food was cooked perfectly. Everything came out hot, fresh, and exactly how we ordered it. It was one of those meals where you take a bite and just know the person cooking cares about what they are doing. I have never had a Waffle House meal this good.

“Miso Ramen bar is undeniably delicious, and my son considers it his favorite ramen spot. Situated conveniently near Downtown Raleigh, the restaurant offers ample parking. I recommend arriving a bit early as there may be a short wait (reservations are not accepted), but there is bar seating available. Upon arrival, you can add your name to the waitlist, which is a nice touch. The restaurant is consistently busy, yet always well-maintained with clean facilities. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu and go the extra mile to ensure a welcoming experience. Whether dining with friends or adults, everyone can find something appetizing on the menu. Here is what we order on our most recent visit: Karage Wings $12 Pork Belly Buns (2) $9 Kids Miso Ramen with Chicken and Eggs Grilled Chicken Rice Bowl $12 The food was delicious overall, and I particularly enjoyed the wings and the pork belly bun. A tip to keep in mind: it's best to finish the wings while you're at the restaurant. If you have any leftovers and take them home, they don't reheat well.”

This is a nice ice cream shop with a good selection, but honestly, their cakes were the highlight for me. They were fresh, rich, and absolutely delicious. The desserts were perfect after a spicy meal and definitely satisfied our sweet cravings. Overall, a great spot to visit if you’re looking for dessert after dinner. “It’s a beautiful bakery, with kind staff and was overall a good experience. In my personal opinion the croissants are the absolute star of the bakery. The pimiento cheese croissant is what southern dreams are made of. The peanut butter cookies were good, as was the baguette (a little more salt and it would have been great, but that’s just being nit-picky). The cinnamon roll was a little on the dry side, maybe could have benefited from a little more glaze, but had a good flavor overall. The shortbread was the heartbreaker for me, but only because I really love shortbread and had high expectations. Shortbread is supposed to be very buttery, and I tasted very little butter. The glaze overpowered it a bit, and I think it messed with the texture as well. If it had been a bit thicker, I doubt the glaze would have affected it as it had. It’s still such a cute cookie, and it’s not the end of the world. Especially with the friendliness of the staff and the variety they had, I know it’s a lot of work and everyone is going to like different things. For me those croissants will be something I dream about, and I can’t say enough good things about. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.”

“Came out to lunch here on invitation from my friend. I didn’t expect to find halal option but was pleasantly surprised when I asked and they confirmed that their chicken ramen was halal! Oh boy was that a treat! I had the chicken curry and the broth alone was marvelous. It was rich, and thick and the hot spice option gave it a nice kick ( nothing too crazy). I would definitely be coming back!

I do wish they made it more clear that they had halal option, I know they’ll be opening up to that section of client for their business. Either way, just confirm whenever you go that their chicken ramen is halal or other halal options. (Not sure if that was a one time thing or if it is a staple on their menu)”

“15/10 would recommend! I was in Raleigh for a week work trip, and ended up here multiple times to eat. Ms. Patty the chef, and face at the counter made the experience that much better! She was kind, as homey as the food tasted, on top of it and boy, can she cook! You can taste, see, and hear her passion and love for food! I love some good BBQ, and prefer to support a small business vs a mediocre chain, and am SOOO glad I stumbled upon this place. Yes, it's a resturant in a gas station ; which always tend to be the hidden gems (IYKYK). This place did not disappoint. The pulled pork sandwich was TOP NOTCH. Those hushpuppies on the side were soo good. All the sides looked sooo good; I struggled to decide on which ones to choose: mac n cheese was cheesy and dreamy, baked beans were packed with flavor, the slaw paired perfectly on the sandwhich, and the broccoli salad was also super delicious!! I wish I could of tried every side, next time I am back in the area, I will be coming back and trying more. The brisket on Thursdays, also sooo delicious 😋. Price point was great, I would easily pay more than I did for what I got and how tasty it was! For sure finish your meal off with the banana pudding 🤤 this place is a hidden gem, and Patty too! I am already dreaming of coming back for more! If you're looking for some good eats- for sure try this place out!!! 🙌❤️”

Figulina 317 S Harrington St, Raleigh Italian • $$

“Farm to Table Italian cuisine with Southern Twist, with the perfect combination of ingredients and Flavors I had the opportunity to dine at Figulina in Raleigh, NC, which offers freshly made pasta with strong Italian influences, bringing in new flavors, ingredients, and spices. The overall restaurant created an atmosphere that catered to a variety of patrons, including couples/dates, families, business colleagues, and small to large groups, with an equally spacious outside patio. The service was also a step above the rest, with curated descriptions of all the cuisines and attention to detail. They surely made the night one to remember and a reason to come back. Having traveled the globe to over 69 countries, including spending an extensive period in Italy, what really impressed me was how they took very Italian-inspired dishes but made them more elaborate and exciting for a one-of-a-kind tasting experience. We started with some appetizers and small plates, which included #1 Stuffed dates with Gorgonzola Dolce, Medjool dates, hazelnuts, hot honey, #2 Whipped ricotta with roasted muscadine, prosciutto, pickled celery, farro piccolo, and verjus, and #3 House Focaccia. The Stuff Dates was a combination of the deep sweetness of the dates, soft creaminess, and flavor from the gorgonzola, complemented by the crunchy hazelnut, and the sweetness of the honey, which produced an amazing one-bite, flavorful experience. The Whipped Ricotta goes beyond sophisticated with its rich ricotta at the bottom, farro for texture and traction, roasted muscadines that burst like little pockets of jam, and prosciutto bits for a slight salty-sweet flavor, leaving you with the desire for more. Finally, the focaccia wasn't really groundbreaking. In fact, I have had much better focaccia in other places – it wasn't exactly worth eating as it just fills up your stomach unnecessarily. We followed up with 3 entrees: #1 Rigatoni with red wine–braised eggplant, capers, oyster mushroom, and bottarga crumb, #2 Triangoli with braised guinea hen, sweet pepper tagine, charred okra, goat lady chèvre, preserved lemon, toasted pistachio, and #3 Mafaldine alla carbonara with guanciale and pecorino romano. The Rigatoni was an intricate pasta dish with a red wine braise that softened the eggplant to a silky, confit consistency, featuring subtle tannic complexity, capers that brought flashes of saltiness, and oyster mushrooms that introduced a satiny, woody texture that played off the eggplant. The bottarga crumb is the coup de grâce: sea salt salinity and sandy crunch that sticks to rigatoni ridges, salting each bite. The Triangoli was an excellent blend of Mediterranean and North African flavors, with the triangoli laminated and cooked just past al dente to accommodate the tangy chèvre's tanginess and creaminess inside. The guinea hen provides a juicy, savory, and spiced flavor profile, while the sweet pepper tagine adds warmth and sweetness. The charred okra brings smokiness and a faint grassy note, and the accompaniment of preserved lemon provides the perfect combination of sweet, savory, and citrus. There was a minor execution issue with the dish. It was too spicy. Unfortunately, when using fresh ingredients from local farms, there are always challenges in what you will receive. They believe that the peppers may have added too much spice to the dish, which made it a little overpowering. While the Mafaldine alla carbonara was a perfected classic, with the silkiness of the fresh pasta, the emulsion of the egg, and the pecorino romano, it also brought a feeling of refreshment with each rich bite. I found the dish to be a little lackluster in terms of complexity. I feel that this dish could have added dimension to make it more interesting with some different garnishes or added flavor elements, such as caramelized onions, wild mushrooms, peas, or even more impactful pancetta, which could elevate this dish to the next level. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone without reservations. The way this restaurant ad”

“Had a great dinner here. Extensive drink menu with something for everyone. Eclectic menu that hits many different genres and somehow gets them all right! Very flavorful and well spiced food- the only exception was the Parmesan truffle fries. They really need some kind of dipping sauce or something on the side of those. I believe there was not enough Parmesan on them, because they were quite bland. Would definitely benefit from a dipping sauce. We put the dipping sauce from the Brussels sprouts appetizer onto them and that helped a lot. The Gardein option is amazing for vegan and vegetarians!”
