50 Best Bakeries in Portland

“I think putting “Italian” in your name is a bit of a stretch. Leads people to believe that one would be able to find similar baked goods as a traditional Italian bakery, which would include more bread items alongside pastries. This place is more of a patisserie. The reason I say “Italian” is a stretch is bc Real Italian Tiramisu is steeped in tradition and is made using lady fingers, or Savoiardi, not sponge cake. At minimum, One should be able to purchase lady fingers from a true Italian bakery. The food is good and so is the coffee. At best, this place is an Italian inspired Patisserie, but don’t expect to walk into a real Italian bakery.“

“The gentleman who helped us was very kind and provided good conversation. He explained the choices (the ones left bc we arrived later in the day, which is a tell sign of a great establishment), he told us about the other locations, the farmers markets they sell at. He did his job well. We had the Maple Brioche Donut and the Rose & Raspberry Crumuffin (i hope i got those correct, apologies if not). Outstanding!! I don't ever go for rose, but it was subtle and not overpowering or fake. The crumb, flake, smoothness of the fillings, taste and tenderness of each dessert was 5 stars. We sat and enjoyed at the picnic tables, which where basic, but all you need! You make your own atmosphere here lol. A window to look into the bakery could be a really cool upgrade. “I've been gluten and dairy free since 2021... not by choice. That's also the last time I had baked goods that actually tasted like they were supposed to. I tried several items from Gem Bakery including: cupcakes, chocolate cake, glazed donut, caramel brownie, chocolate cookie, and bagels. Oh my goodness, they were just how I remembered them tasting! Texture was spot-on, flavor was delicious, and I wouldn't have known the desserts were gluten and dairy free at all. There were no gritty or gummy textures in the wheat flour replacement and there wasn't an overwhelming coconut flavor where dairy was replaced. I hope to return to this basket every time we visit Portland!“

“Passing through town and I needed a cupcake for my daughter’s birthday. We popped in here and had the most amazing breakfast sandwich & biscuits and gravy 🔥 The young lady at the counter (so sorry I forgot your name) was so gracious and the young man did a custom cupcake order for me while we ate breakfast ❤ I am beyond grateful for their outstanding customer service! We will definitely pop in every time we are this way.“

There is a trove of Gluten-free pastry options, along with a regular breakfast/brunch menu. I recommend the Japanese custard buns. Yummy.“

Nothing is gluten-free, but that said, the gluten is mostly limited to the super tiny sponge cake base. That means most of their desserts are edible for people who know how to operate a fork. Light, fluffy, very mousse-based

“The conchas are fresh, airy, and delicious. And their pan de muerto in October is excellent. The folks that work here are very kind and helpful. It's in an obscure location in Milwaukie but worth stopping by if you're in the area. It could not be a better shop to support“

So many options amd they all looked fabulous!
We may have just chosen the wrong things. We tried a plain mini Oreo cookie and the mini chocolate chip. The mini chocolate chip was OK, but only had 3 chocolate chips. The plain Oreo looked great but was rather bland. But we realize it's not meant to be eaten without frosting. I guess for the.price, we were expecting to be wowed.“

“I mean, if you haven’t tried this place what are you even doing. Go early if you want the full selection because they sell out quickly. Try all the things because everything is delicious. I always get a raspberry rose cruffin for my dad because it’s his favorite, but I haven’t tried anything I didn’t like. Savory or sweet you really can’t go wrong, they even have small cakes if you aren’t in a pastry mood but the flaky layers are truly something to behold. “I've never taken the time to write a review for any business, but am pretty put off and have the time. Today is my husband's and my 11th wedding anniversary. We had Saint Cupcake at our wedding with a cupcake tower and wedding topper cake in 2011. To celebrate our 11 years of marriage, we went to go pick up cupcakes. Based on online information and the sign on the door, the business closes at 5pm on Saturdays. We arrived at 4:20PM - 40 minutes before closing. Both doors were shut and locked, but there were two employees inside and cupcakes on the back counters. They ignored us, even though I attempted to open each of the double doors - they wouldn't even look up. I knocked on the door and the woman sweeping reluctantly came and opened the door and told us that they had unfortunately closed early due to some issue. I tried to explain to her we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and had had Saint Cupcake at our wedding 11 years prior. She said they didn't have much of a selection left anyway and closed the door on us. It was a shocking and weird interaction and I was really put off. I will never go out of my way to give Saint Cupcake my business again in the future. 👎👎“

We ended up choosing our own combination (lemon cake, raspberry compote, and vanilla buttercream) and did a custom cake. We provided an inspo picture, and the cake we received was better looking than the inspiration!! Not to mention the cake is the best thing we have tasted!! The whole process was seamless, and she provides specific cake care instructions that make it so easy. The best decision! Highly recommend!“

These bagels could heal the world I swear. Chewy, crunchy, and soft all in one making for the perfect texture. I always get the Porklander with bacon and cheddar on salt with butter/salt/pepper. A true neighborhood spot.“
