They were bold and surprising and our two non-vegan guests ate every last morsel and then some. The non-vegan nights are equally as extraordinary! Friendly, professional staff (Bas was out server tonight and he was great!) and just a fabulous experience!!! I love the fact that the head chef is a woman (as an aside)!”

“We had a great evening at Penny's Wine Shop - we enjoyed the full flight of featured wines by the glass and paired them with several of the shared plate selections. Oyster mushrooms conserva and potato dauphinoise were our top favorites with the Bolet Cava and Patience Blanc white blend, but everything we tasted was delicious – oh that Basque cheesecake! “I spent New Years Eve here and while the space was amazing, the planning and execution of the event was not. We paid extra for a VIP experience - the food was FANTASTIC! Probably the best thing of the night! The evening included a 90s dress contest, a 90s band and midnight champagne toast....Well, the contest winner was not even announced nor was added to their Instagram - there were 4 pictures posted out of everyone dressed up. Up in the VIP room, there was NO count down or anything - it was 2024 and we didn't even realize it - so much for our special midnight toast in the VIP Lounge! While I didn't know one song the band played, I was assured they were 90s songs. the advertisements should have said ONE STYLE of 90s music.. this event can be great....Just needs some work to it ... especially when people are paying extra!”

Each dish was nuanced, layered with flavor and texture. The crab cakes were indeed all crab, and the potato leek soup was absolute velvet, wonderful and creamy. “Dinner at Alewife was the highlight of our five-day visit to Richmond. First off, it was a relief to get out of downtown Richmond with its huge empty parking lots, boarded up storefronts and deserted streets. The historic Church Hill section, with its 19th century row and other houses and interesting looking restaurants and shops, was such a pleasant change. Parking near Alewife was a bit of a challenge, but we quickly found a spot just a block away.The restaurant itself has a fascinating vibe, part friendly neighborhood spot and part disarmingly upmarket dining room. You just knew the food would be interesting, and it was. We started with a gin and tonic and a non-alcoholic beer. The menu is fairly short and apparently changes nightly, or at least frequently.I would never in this world think that I would enjoy an appetizer of raw oysters, bright green pickle juice, creme fraiche and fresh dill. But it was an amazing flavor combination. My partner's appetizer was equally interesting -- lox on thick, toasted rustic bread.As mains, we had the arctic char, with grilled carrots, and the skate, both perfectly prepared and delicious. Service throughout the meal was just right -- friendly, attentive but not overly so. Our charge for two, including tip, was around $150, well worth the price. Thank you for a great meal experience!”

I was going to get the firecracker shrimp but they had some Reuben sandwiches left from Saint Patties Day so we both had them and we weren’t disappointed! It was my BFF’s birthday dinner and they sent over a yummy chocolate cake for her. Thank you. “I very much enjoyed the experience at Uliveto. The service and ambience were warm and inviting. As for the food, I enjoyed the olive bread and octopus special. Though I would have preferred the olive bread served warm. They reminded me of my many culinary experiences in Europe. However the portion and presentation when it came to the flounder entree was poor. The portion size was much too large and the presentation needed work. I thought the fish was cooked well. I think this restaurant has the opportunity to become a staple in the community. My hope is the menu options are decreased by half or more. A focus on a few dishes that are executed on well in taste, portion, and appearance would not only help customers avoid decision fatigue when choosing their meal, but would ensure consistent quality of food. Having a smaller menu would also help keep costs down by helping the restaurant have less food inventory which should ensure ingredients are consistently fresh. I would also consider having a separate wine bottle menu that is offered on request, while shifting wine by the glass to the cocktail menu.”

“I ate here with a good friend of mine and the atmosphere was very nice, we got a wonderful booth next to the window and they work on a reservation system so heads up on that! The food overall was pretty good, my friend is a big fan of their broccoli but for me nothing stood out to me. Its a very Richmond hipster restaurant with taking elements from different cultures but with their own twist. The dessert however was great and the staff is wonderful so it makes me sad to see disrespectful costumers.”

They keep it as clean as humanly possible and 2 minutes later it will be trashed again by street people doing their thing. I can't imagine what the employees have to deal with on a day-to-day basis here. Cut them some slack. They're doing the best they can with what they have to work with and don't get paid much to deal with your grief and/or impatience. I've always had great service here and the lady at the register today was singing in the rain on an early Sunday morning while ringing up my coffee. Thank you, Sister.”

“These bagels are the undisputed champ in this part of the world! They get everything right. Somehow a buttered bagel completely misses the mark we sadly found out. This bagel is perfect but if you’re expecting butter this misses the mark completely . For context, in the bakeries in the Northeast a Buttered bagel or roll has BUTTER, not as much as a cream cheese smear but doggone close! That’s buttered! We could hardly see the butter between the slices which was very disappointing AND pricey since butter is $1. So please give me butter I can see, I’ll fix it if it’s too much, but I can’t do anything about it if it’s barely there. My advice? Stick with the cream cheese smear until they’re brave enough to really Butter a Bagel!”

“I was there for a pottery pop up market, advertised as part of a pot-pub crawl in conjunction with the NCECA Pottery Convention in town- I of course had to pop in for a cocktail! I got the Blackberry Smash- which was delicious, even if I was freezing and wishing for a hot drink! lol. I also was intrigued with their specialty simple syrups- I sprung for a blackberry vanilla simple syrup to take home for cocktails! The bar was brightly lit, fun menu boards and quick service! “Having not been to this location in over 10 years, I was very pleasantly surprised with my first time back. My dining compatriot and I arrived around 7:15 and we were lucky enough to choose a seat in Deborah's section, a seasoned waitress who knew how to take care of us, along with the rest of her section, and didn't stop for a moment. She was awesome! We encountered a small issue with a lack of signage at the grill which led to am embarrassing moment brought about by one of the staff, but the manager TJ was more than happy to come sit with us and hear about our experience. He didn't jump to the defense of the employee and acknowledged the lack of signage which led to the issue, agreeing with us that this was a great learning experience for the employee. The fact that he took the time to hear about the concerns and even chatted with us for a few moments spoke volumes about his abilities as a manager. As soon as he left our table, he was right back to ensuring the place was spic and span, giving directions to the employees who weren't busy at the moment, jumping in to assist customers wherever possible, and in general doing a damn fine job of managing the place! Despite the minor hiccup, we had a great experience dining there this evening and will certainly be coming back, hopefully seated in Deborah's section!”

“We were in town visiting for a conference, and we found the restaurant online. We headed to the restaurant, but when we got there the owner explained that the restaurant had just closed for the evening. He gave us a few recommendations on other places to eat, and we started to search for an Uber. A few minutes later, the owner, Tysean, opened the door and offered to go back in the kitchen and cook something for us. We couldn’t pass that offer up. We waited for a few minutes, and he brought us out some of the best chicken I’ve eaten in a long time along with some, nicely seasoned potato wedges and hot buttery honey biscuits. Along with some honey mustard dipping sauce and sweet tea to wash it all down, we had an amazing meal. I’ll definitely be back, and you should visit if you are in Richmond.”

We will continue to patronize the restaurant and will ask for the manager the next time.”

The young woman who took my order was friendly. The ambiance of pulling into the drive thru was a little cramped. It is understandable though because of the location. I wish it had more than one entrance and exit. As you try and exit you block those coming in. The combo I got was good. I live the cane sauce it really set off the chicken.
