Mitch a bearded man in a wedding dress due to a lost bet is humiliated in public. Mitch, although blushing and sheepish in his bridal gown, was an excellent sport, embodying the saying that a bet is a bet, with all the grace and humor one could muster. “Ok, so this place is what some might call a “hole in the wall.” Anyone who’s ever eaten at a true hole-in-the-wall knows that’s usually a very good thing.

The food is great.

My wife is Salvadoreña, so I’m probably a little biased about what makes a really good pupusa. Theirs were good, but the filling tasted a little more like it was sitting inside the masa rather than becoming part of one unified bite. They didn’t quite fuse into that soft, balanced texture that a truly great pupusa has. You generally shouldn’t see the filling separating from the masa when you bite into it or “butterfly” it open to add curtido, the lightly pickled Salvadoran cabbage slaw traditionally served with pupusas.

That said, they were still tasty and clearly made with care.

Now let me say this: I tried several different meat preparations there, including shrimp, and every one of them was excellent. I don’t know exactly what marinade or seasoning blend they use, but it is fantastic. This was actually my second visit, and those dishes are what brought me back. The second trip absolutely held up.

My wife and I also ordered the plantains and fried yuca. The Salvadoran crema — a soft, silky cream sauce with a flavor somewhat like cream cheese, but richer and deeper — was excellent with the plantains, though honestly it pairs well with almost everything there.

The prices were reasonable too.

One thing I always look for in a good hole-in-the-wall is whether working-class locals actually eat there regularly. This place passed that test easily. You see young and old customers coming in for lunch breaks, after work dinners, or meals with family and friends. That usually tells you everything you need to know. The food is hearty, flavorful, and clearly supported by a loyal customer base that probably judges it against home cooking.

That’s a very good sign.

“2.5/5 stars The problem is the service and food level deterioration as the lunch buffet window, 1130-230, progresses into the later portions. The first and previous time, we hit the buffet right at opening at 1130 am. Everything was hot, fresh, and plentiful. Was really impressed with staff, decor, and ambience. Food was well above average. It's clear they are trying very hard. My/our 2nd visit, party of 3, was at ~130 pm. Few items were out. Sadly, the other 2 in the party found the experience below my earlier top billing. Most of my fav dishes: The few tandoori chicken remaining were stone cold. The butter chicken ran out. The goat curry ran out the 2nd trip to the table. What came subsequently was not the same taste, subpar. Perhaps the management can address these issues and consider this as genuinely helpful feedback. Restaurant biz is notorious for these issues that slowly creep in. I did note the manager talk and motion to his employee to keep up with replenishment in a timely manner on my request. Given the great first visit, and two carry-outs from their 2nd location, we would consider another review after management addresses these issues. The most recent visit was a letdown. Cheers!!”

“We just tried El Patriota for the 1st time today, and we loved it!! It is a small shop with BIG sandwiches that are absolutely delicious. I had the Patriota and my wife had the Tripleta. Both were fantastic. This is a definite keeper.”

“I went to Red Panda on Monday, 11-17-25. I had egg soup the first time I went and this was my second time going. I had the egg soup again and the chicken fried rice. It was simply delicious!! They served with excellence every customer. It was a pleasant relaxing environment as well. The music was just right and not too loud like some places you go too. People could sit and talk and enjoy their meal. I did the lunch special which is a savings!! I will be back!!”

“I have driven to the Hulen St. Unrefined location for 4 years to order my nephews’s special corn and gluten free vanilla cake with strawberry frosting for his birthday. My sister told me Cookies, Crust and Crumb bakery was now owned by Unrefined and it was in Hurst and much closer for me. Ordering was a breeze and the cake was the best one we’ve had. They said they quoted me a much lower price than normal and would honor that price. I wear hearing aids so didn’t hear the price quoted and told her I was prepared to pay the correct price and she insisted I should only pay what she quoted. I was very pleased with the service and the cake got rave reviews from all who ate it even our server at our restaurant celebration raved about the cake. We should have picked up cards from the bakery to hand out! Great experience all around. Highly recommend.”

“This place has delicious eats. BUT, my husband went by there after work to grab 3 burritos and 2 tiny soft tacos, and it was over $50!! I know everybody’s trying to make a living, and I’m all about supporting local businesses, but we’re also trying to live out here. We would go by there a couple times a week if it was about half that price for some burritos and tacos. Hopefully there’s enough people in Hurst the mid cities willing to pay that to keep this place open. I hate to see local businesses fail!”

“I love this place. For anyone who has had a negative experience here I would suggest that you give them another try because I can guarantee you that bad experienced here are few and far between. Not only is food always super fresh and delicious but the portions are very generous. Especially the burritos. Their chili relleno burrito is the best and biggest burrito that I’ve ever had and it’s only 4.50. You could buy nothing but two burritos and feed a family of four. I also love that they stay open so late. I happen to be out and about late tonight and around 11 pm I had a serious craving for good TexMex and this place didn’t disappoint. I had the giant chili relleno burrito and I also got nachos with a side of rice and beans and it’s enough for a few meals but I couldn’t make up my mind and have plenty of yummy leftovers. I topped it off with a large horchata and it just made my night. I plan to continue to eat here and I tell everyone that I know in the area about it all of the time.”

“Since my wife and I recently found Black Rock Coffee here in Hurst, it's been our go to spot for coffee and caramel lattes just edging out Sc----ters. The protein caramel latte's are always done perfectly and the wife's hot caramel blondie is fantastic. She's having fun getting all the lightning bolts to earn more freebies I guess, she loves it! The service it always with a smile, pup cups on the ready and hardly any wait time even in the drive thru! Other places, just can't say that so much. I highly recommend a trip to Black Rock if you haven't

“I've come here every once and a while off and on for about a decade, the service is always amazing and the food is always great, I was torn about leaving a review that was in poorer taste because this is a really amazing place to eat. I've noticed lately though the portion sizes are diminishing, I ordered the OMG appetizer with jalapeno, cream cheese, crab, ect, (half of the portion I got was already gone by the time I took the photo) and it's delicious! Definitely worth getting, but I was just a little disappointed that all the sticks are about the size of my pinky finger, definitely a one bite and done kind of deal. And in the Philadelphia roll I ordered, there was genuinely barely any smoked salmon except for 1 piece and I took the photo after eating a piece and realizing, though what was there was absolutely delicious! I just wished there was a little bit more for an even amount between the other ingredients in the roll. The last thing I'll add, and I hate to admit it, is I was relieved that I ordered for pickup because when I walked in to grab my food I was immediately hit with a strange sort of sewage smell as soon as I entered the doors, I'm not sure if they were just having some plumbing issues or what, but a friend of mine mentioned when I told them I was ordering that they smelled the sewage smell last time they were in the restaurant too. But the servers behind the counter were very very sweet when I picked up my order, they always are, nothing was missing from my order and everything tasted so fresh and so yummy! I'll definitely keep coming back!”

“I can here for a queso crunchy double chicken bowl. There combination of overhead music, loud kitchen, and a fast but quiet speaking cashier meant it took a little bit to get the order across. Also I wanted the red salsa which I always remember getting at a salsa bar but they don't have the salsa bar here, even though you can tell where it's supposed to be. The same combination of noise and communication means I gave up on trying to get it, I wound up getting some super spicy picante sauce instead. Oddly enough the next customer was handled by another cashier and I could hear and understand her from my seat 25 feet away. Also there's only one napkin dispenser and they keep it almost behind the counter. I understand wanting to control costs but there's not going to be any customers if you treat them all like they can't be trusted to even get a napkin or some salsa.

“They have different sauce selections. I loved the Chipotle sauce which is not spicy. Food was delicious but 2 of our meals had the wrong meat. Cashier did read back the order and it was taken correctly. The taco price seemed a little high for me I think it was $4 and some change for each taco. Burritos and other meals range from $11- $16. They had churros which I wish I would have tried. Those were 1-$3.50 6-$19 and 12 for $36. Seemed a little high for me. But I also don't know how big they were to see if they justified for the cost. Overall I will be going back for their Birria Pizza.”
