You must come here - the server we had (Umida) was insanely amazing and super helpful - she really elevated the experience and made sure we didn’t order too much food!“

“First thing first, the sushi is really fresh. We got the toro, salmon belly, and the yellowtail belly. Saba is a little fishy. The rice is a bit mushy but good enough.

The cooked food is not as great. The agedashi tofu has too much breading and taste average. Kaiju tar tar is okayyy.

The service however took forever, and they never come to check up on us. Servers reach over to get dishes for other tables. Maybe they are short staffed but they should still handle us probably.“

“okay i could write an entire novel about my experience here, but i will keep it brief. my sister and i came to the WeHo Uchi to celebrate my birthday after hearing lots of buzz about it. When we entered, we were immediately greeted warmly and had a lovely exchange with the host. The ambiance was beautiful, everything was pristine and curated, and everyone member of the staff were friendly and comfortable to speak to. Our waiter—whom i sadly cannot remember the name of— truly went above and beyond with his service. We ordered the omakase for two and a few other small dishes, but he threw in two on the house— one being wagyu as a “birthday present” and the other being nigiri. We were choosing between the nigiri and a roll, and when we ultimately chose the roll, our waiter brought us both dishes anyway. Everything felt incredibly thoughtful and personal; there was even a little handwritten card wishing me a happy birthday. The food came out very swiftly—and speaking of the food, it exceeded our expectations. Everything was fresh, beautiful in its presentation, and very unique. This is one of the few sushi places in LA that I think truly lives up to the hype surrounding it. thank you for a great birthday dinner; we will be back again, again, and again!“

“My dinner at Kanpai Sushi in Santa Monica was nothing short of extraordinary. Chef Yoshi is a true master sushi chef. While he may not be new to the craft, his skill, precision, and deep understanding of traditional sushi brought me back to a time when sushi was simply done right.

In fact, Chef Yoshi could probably serve me a shoelace, and it would be the best thing I’ve ever eaten.

Everything was exceptionally fresh. The wasabi had a vibrant freshness that elevated every bite, and the ginger practically melted in my mouth. I sampled as much toro as I could possibly eat, along with an incredible selection of fish that showcased Chef Yoshi’s mastery and attention to detail.

The Kumamoto oysters were so delicious they made me want to kiss my fingers and thank the heavens. The uni was phenomenal and remains one of my favorite bites of the evening. However, the biggest surprise was the seared salmon belly. It was my first time trying salmon prepared that way, and it absolutely blew my mind.

Instead of ending the meal with dessert, I finished with a hand roll that combined fresh tuna and crispy shrimp tempura, topped with eel sauce. The contrast of cool, fresh tuna and warm, crunchy shrimp tempura created an unforgettable bite and was a complete game changer.

I’ve been eating sushi since I was 18 years old, and now well into my 50s, I can confidently say this is the best sushi restaurant I have ever experienced. Beyond the incredible food, the staff was attentive, professional, and genuinely respectful throughout the entire evening.

I have officially found my favorite sushi spot.

“We visited this restaurant as a couple. Unfortunately, reservations are not accepted, so we had to wait on the street for about 45 minutes to get a table.

Normally, I would not be willing to wait that long, but I had been told several times that the food was well worth the wait because of the restaurant's outstanding cuisine.

After entering the restaurant, the first thing I noticed was the rather high noise level. The interior design also seemed quite simple and functional rather than particularly cozy or stylish. On the positive side, the service was attentive, friendly, and pleasantly unobtrusive.

The quality of the food was excellent. Every dish we ordered impressed us with its freshness and flavor. Particularly noteworthy was the selection of seafood specialties, including some items that are not commonly found in many restaurants.

Overall, we were very impressed by the food, and it was ultimately the main reason why the wait was worthwhile.“

“Just moved to the area and walked in for dinner around 8pm on a Monday. We got the $120PP omakase as well as some appetizers. Being sushi aficionados (but from New York) we were very pleasantly surprised with the high quality and price here.

“Katsu-ya is my neighborhood sushi spot, and it is a good one. This is not the place you go when you want the best sushi of your life or a meal that is going to blow your mind. This is where you go when you want good, consistent sushi any day of the week.

It is the Toyota Avalon of sushi restaurants, on the upper end of reliable, and I go there constantly. They are always busy and have many celebrity clients, if that matters to you. Service is consistently great as well. If you want a table, it is best to make a reservation since they are often very busy.“

“I highly recommend this restaurant! The food is great and the sushi is absolutely amazing — super fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. Every roll we tried was delicious, and you can really tell they care about quality.

The only downside I can mention is the bathrooms. They’re unisex and were veryyy dirty when we visited, which was disappointing compared to how good everything else was.

We loved the little bites we got. For two of us, it came to about $180 (we ordered about 8 things so not bad). Our favorites were the yellowtail cilantro roll, crispy shrimp & yellowtail sushi. A little bit of a backup when we first arrived (drinks came after our apps came) but I guess they got a rush that they didn't expect.
