“Came for the Father’s Day brunch with husband and kids. We sat outside on the patio overlooking the marina. Very calming ambience. I was pleased to see there was a kids’ menu even though the restaurant has more of an adult vibe. We ordered the sushi flight, Caesar salad, taco trio, and Caesar mushroom wrap. The kids got guacamole, cheeseburgers, lemonade, and a big cookie. All the food was excellent and generous portions. I was expecting very small portions so we ordered way too much food and will have leftovers for dinner. I wish I had taken pictures cause it was all so pretty! We will be definitely go back again. “We’re big fans of Omakase and have also been to the Culver City location, which is just as good. Both spots consistently deliver an incredible experience.
The sushi is amazing- super fresh, beautifully made, and you can tell a lot of care goes into every bite. The Santa Monica location keeps that same high standard we’ve come to expect, with great service and a chill but still elevated vibe.
It’s one of those spots you just know you’re going to leave happy every time. Highly recommend if you love really good sushi and a solid omakase experience.“

“Probably some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever had. There was a flyer left on a car at the park in Torrance and I was craving sushi so decided to go try it wonderful sushi very good. “Super cute! The food was fast and fresh for weekday late lunch. Ample spacious seating and friendly staff! I did not try the scallop or watch trio bc I didn't like the teriyaki or mayo/onion on the salmon. I wanted the scallops plain or with the salt sauce, but it wasn't available. But otherwise, the fish were a good temp, well portioned (cut), and delicious. I order various salmon sashimi, nigiri, yellow tail, and tuna dishes.“

“Just moved to the area and walked in for dinner around 8pm on a Monday. We got the $120PP omakase as well as some appetizers. Being sushi aficionados (but from New York) we were very pleasantly surprised with the high quality and price here.

The pieces of sushi were expertly cut and the rice was perfect. Each piece was a 10/10. My only regret is that we didn’t get MORE. I can’t wait to be back and am planning to be a regular here :)“

“Not that I've eaten at a ton of high-end omakase sushi restaurants, but Sushi Sonagi is one of the best omakase restaurants I've had in the world.

Chef Son seems to do a seasonal menu, but sources and prepares fish uniquely that not only tastes absolutely amazing, but also in a way that I didn't taste at several other, Michelin-starred omakase sushi restaurants. For example, I personally do not enjoy the taste of salmon, but the one Chef Son prepared (he described it as a 1 in 1000 salmon) did not have a strong salmon flavor at all, and it ended up being one of my favorite courses out of the whole meal. It should speak volumes of his skill that he could turn one of my least favorite ingredients into a dish I hope I'll be able to eat more of.

While I'm not a big sake person, the waitress (I assume his wife but I don't know for sure) was happy to recommend a sake based on my taste preference and she really nailed it, it was one of the best tasting sakes I've ever had as well.

Chef Son was also very conversational, and as a local South Bay resident he was able to chat with all the customers about a ton of stuff. Mostly food and cooking of course, but also other things as well. It was a much more relaxed and casual setting than other places at the $200+ price point, which I appreciated.

These types of restaurants are usually one and done for me no matter how good they are, but Sushi Sonagi is the first one I'm seriously considering returning to, and sooner rather than later.“

“My dinner at Kanpai Sushi in Santa Monica was nothing short of extraordinary. Chef Yoshi is a true master sushi chef. While he may not be new to the craft, his skill, precision, and deep understanding of traditional sushi brought me back to a time when sushi was simply done right.

In fact, Chef Yoshi could probably serve me a shoelace, and it would be the best thing I’ve ever eaten.

Everything was exceptionally fresh. The wasabi had a vibrant freshness that elevated every bite, and the ginger practically melted in my mouth. I sampled as much toro as I could possibly eat, along with an incredible selection of fish that showcased Chef Yoshi’s mastery and attention to detail.

The Kumamoto oysters were so delicious they made me want to kiss my fingers and thank the heavens. The uni was phenomenal and remains one of my favorite bites of the evening. However, the biggest surprise was the seared salmon belly. It was my first time trying salmon prepared that way, and it absolutely blew my mind.

Instead of ending the meal with dessert, I finished with a hand roll that combined fresh tuna and crispy shrimp tempura, topped with eel sauce. The contrast of cool, fresh tuna and warm, crunchy shrimp tempura created an unforgettable bite and was a complete game changer.

I’ve been eating sushi since I was 18 years old, and now well into my 50s, I can confidently say this is the best sushi restaurant I have ever experienced. Beyond the incredible food, the staff was attentive, professional, and genuinely respectful throughout the entire evening.

I have officially found my favorite sushi spot.

I have had the good fortune to visit Echigo on a number of occasions over quite a few years, it has always been exceptional, Chef is a true master of his craft. It’s a low key place, not fancy, just great sushi and lovely friendly service. Order whatever the chef wants to make for you and enjoy mouthful after mouthful of delicious sushi. I’m looking forward to returning next time I’m in town.“

“Finding an authentic sushi spot in the US run by a Japanese chef feels increasingly rare these days. While I don't believe a chef's nationality strictly dictates their capability—by that logic, only French people could cook French food—the scarcity of these traditional spots made me search even harder. That extra effort led me to Toshi Sushi in Gardena, and it was entirely worth it.

I have visited twice now, both times for Saturday lunch. A huge plus was that it wasn’t overwhelmingly busy, allowing for a remarkably peaceful and relaxed dining experience. On both occasions, the ingredients were incredibly fresh, and every plate felt meticulously prepared. They even garnish the dishes with beautiful Hawaiian flowers, which the staff thoughtfully let us know are completely edible.

Sometimes, hyper-traditional spots can be a bit too conservative with their portions of wasabi and ginger, but Toshi Sushi provides a generous amount. It’s a smart, necessary adjustment to cater to the American palate, and it made the meal much more enjoyable without the need to constantly ask for refills.

However, the exact moment I knew this place truly cared about quality came down to a single, overlooked detail: the soy sauce. Real soy sauce should always be refrigerated to preserve its true flavor profile, yet countless sushi joints leave it sitting out on tables at room temperature for weeks, simply topping off the bottles. At Toshi Sushi, the second we placed our order, they brought out a chilled bottle of soy sauce straight from the fridge. Absolute respect. That standard alone speaks volumes about their discipline.

I will definitely be heading back soon, and I'm already planning to feature this hidden gem in an upcoming review video. If you appreciate genuine quality and strict attention to detail, Toshi Sushi is highly recommended.“
