50 Best Bakeries in Richmond

“Sub Rosa is THE bakery in Richmond! I live about 2 hours away and always make sure I stop by when I’m passing by. It’s about half a mile off the highway, so it’s easy. There’s no parking lot, so finding parking can be an issue, but don’t let that discourage you!

The bread and baked goods are as close to being in Europe as I’ve found (I lived abroad for 8 years). Crusts are light, flaky and leave a little butter on your lips. Everything is fresh and full of flavor. Staff is always friendly and welcoming.

They serve and sell both Recluse and Afterglow coffee - both are excellent local beans.

I spoke to the manager (if I remember correctly, her name was Faith) and she could not have been any nicer or more professional in straightening out our problem. Crumbl is lucky to have such a pleasant person working for them, and taking the time to help me out....

“Such a cute biscuit shop! I got the special biscuit of the day, cheddar cheese, and the strawberry iced matcha. Both were good, and the biscuit was enormous!
Was very busy, but food and my matcha came out fast. Service was lovely.

“I recently stopped by Pies and Cakes in Richmond, and it’s a charming little bakery that really impressed me. The shop is small and cozy, but the desserts are packed with flavor. They offer a rotating selection of pies, cakes, cookies, and cupcakes, so there’s usually something new to try each time you visit.

“I come to IH all the time, right on my street. This morning I got the mixed berry galette and it is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. Not too sweet, perfectly flaky, with the slight crunch of granulated sugar washed on the dough. It is absolute perfection. Please consider making it a regular 😍 Thanks for all you do. Great bakers, great staff, love the music. Thankful you’re always there for brekkie when I’ve been too lazy to grocery shop.“

“Our go-to for desserts, and they just happen to be vegan! Flavorful, beautifully prepared, unique items you can't find elsewhere. The savory options are amazing too, they are magicians with seitan. Don't miss their seasonal offerings for holidays! Most recently we had a delicious box of items for high tea from their Mothers' Day menu and everything was perfect and fresh. We are really lucky to have Sunflower Gardenz in our city, a hidden gem for sure“

“Our experience with getting our wedding cake from Sugar Magnolia was the best! After submitting an inquiry, we worked with the owner, Ella, to confirm flavor, design, and all logistics. On the day, the wedding cake looked exactly like the inspirational photos we had sent over and it tasted even better than it looked. The price was great and we got lots of compliments. “The tamales are awesome. I had banana leaf wrapped pork tamales that were awesome, country of origin recipe undetermined. It wasn't a traditional Mexican variety, but it was next level good. The Mexican tamales on my second visit were good as well. I had a language barrier issue that I will definitely overcome with my translate app. I'm going to have them call me when the banana leaf wrapped tamales are available again. Seriously next level.“

“I found these folks at Ashland Train Day. I broke my rule about not buying anything until walking the whole event. And boy am I glad I did! their food is so good! I got some cheesy roll things, a garlic cheese style bread, a blueberry scone? I think it was, and a fruity pebble style rice krispie treat. Everything was so incredibly yummy! They really helped us narrow down our options and speak to the way in which each flavor and icing style would present aesthetically so that we could help coordinate our choices to fit our wedding! They also were extremely patient as our guest count fluctuated and allowed us to edit our guest count accordingly up until the very end! The cupcakes and cake turned out BEAUTIFULLY! People were absolutely raving about how delicious the wedding cake was — some even said it was the best they’ve ever had! They also helped facilitate our design plan of incorporating edible flowers into our desserts. It looked so cool and unique! I would totally recommend them to anyone in the market for a wedding or event. They’re great!“
