“We went on a busy Friday night. The food quality was excellent, and we especially enjoyed their marinated beef. They have a sauce bar as well. They have a unique system where every 10 minutes you can order additional food items for the table, it worked great for us. I literally set a tomer until we were full. This included dessert.
My only complaint was that we had to choose between soup OR grill, we couldn’t do both. Many of the vegetables we got were clearly not cut to be grilled, but grill them we did. The mushrooms oy came out about 3 pieces at a time, and they were thick.“

“Usually these kind of shops are usually very not organized and not sanitized well. When checked the place the food stalls were nice and clean and there were no cross contamination.
Can be bit pricey than you expect because the food is weighed but other than that I am very pleased with the organization and sanitization. The taste of the food is good and very filling, if you want to a hot meal I totally recommend this place.“

“The food here is delicious. I like to eat this dandan noodles the most, the noodles have a little bit of QQ. The xiaolongbao here are delicious.
It's also very beautiful here, with many cat paintings.
I will definitely come again next time.“

“This is the only restaurant in SF that I know to serve lamb back bone hot pot. I crave their broth every time its get raining and cold in the bay area. This broth is not msg broth. It's full of flavor and you can taste that they cooked for a long time. Just minus 1 star because it's kinda expensive. I'd suggest the owner adjust the menu price to give customers selections on hot pot size. That's way, with 2 people eating there will be option for smaller hot pot size.“

“Second time here and it was just as good as the first! Came in on a Monday night for dinner and they were packed, but no line which was great.
Went with their pork broth and I gotta say it had great flavor and their beef ribeye was tender! You can taste the quality in their meats. The grill and side dishes are always a plus.
The restaurant is on the smaller side but awesome atmosphere, attentive service and good people there! Will be back!“

“This place was fuller than I expected, but we didn't have to wait too long, which was great. I liked that they do individual hot pots, so if you don't like what others like, you're separated and can do your own thing. That said, I'm not a fan of starting from pre-built options, since many of the items on the veggie plate are not my thing, and I feel bad throwing away food... Would recommend, but come prepared“
“We're so happy that they're open again. We recently saw Lydia Pense & Cold Blood and we had a great time. We had dinner here, which was really good! We had biscuits, creole jambalaya, shrimp & grits plus some wine.
We met Tina, who we talked to before and after the show, and she was extremely nice. We'll be back!“

“My favorite hot pot place in SF! Wide variety of offerings for an AYCE place. They offer 10+ soup base flavors (try the tomato!), an abundance of hot pot ingredients, and even small appetizers/desserts. The sauce bar is generous too, and their house sauce is delicious (albeit unconventional). Will definitely be coming back!
Service is fairly minimal, but I don't go to hot pot places for the service. This place is well priced, and the ingredients are fresh, abundant, and delicious.“

“The food was amazing. Spicy broth was the best, meats were amazing although we did notice a slight difference between the cuts of Wagyu steak. Service was okay I feel like they were not busy enough to be as forgetful as they were but never the less the overall experience was amazing. Was a bit pricy but for an all you can eat for 90 minutes I’d say it’s worth it!“

“Our family has been coming to eat for almost 2 years. Food is always good. Everytime we came our baby grandson, who is almost 21 months old, didn't have to pay until today. The waitress insisted that we have to pay $7.50 for our 21 months old baby as long as he eats. She said anyone 5 and under will have to pay $7.50 unless he or she doesn't eat any of their stuff. We really don't know how they can justify charging $7.50 for a 21 months old baby. In fact we were there less than a month ago and the waiter didn't charge our 21 months old baby. It's not the money we care about it's the principal. So bare in mind don't let your baby eat any of their stuff or else you'll be charged $7.50.“

“As a Vancouver (best city for authentic Chinese food) native, you gotta trust me when I say this is what true hot pot is like. The king oyster mushrooms are sliced thinly to perfection, the bean curb roll offerings are generous, they give you lots of the leafy part of napa cabbages, and when you need more item you simply wave down the waiters instead of writing it down on paper with your other orders. The best part? The unlimited free drinks and chicken feet!“

“Came by on a busy weekday with a hungry appetite. Gave this place a try since other places were packed. Was seated quickly and scrolled through their menu. The service was alright since they only had one server for a busy night. The dishes we chose were good but nothing special but filled the hunger.
Vegetarian options: Non-meat options available
Parking: Parking throughout the area
Wheelchair accessibility: Stand opened door for easy wheelchair access“

“This is a nice addition to Clemente Street for spicy hot pot of various varieties. Malatang the numbing Chinese flavor was our draw in to the store, but they have many other versions of soups such as laksa and tom yum. The beef broth was a little weak, but the numbing flavor was quite strong. You pick all of your ingredients and we enjoyed all except we found we didn't like the yam noodles. The staff was really nice and helpful and the interior was modern yet with a little bit of classic Chinese art. Really looking forward to trying this place again and trying the other flavors and ingredients. We are omnivores but we would like to come back and try it with totally vegan soup and ingredients option.“

“Food was great but I can’t get over being seated at a table for four when we had a party of six! Table was very crowded with hot pots appetizer dishes! Finally Emily was nice enough to move us to a decent table but then we had to wait for all our food to be transferred to our new table. A big inconvenience for our surprise birthday guest. Besides that the spicy miso and regular miso broth were very delicious and fun to cook for my first experience at hot pot. Atmosphere was great and was very packed but does get quite hot inside after a while. They did have an all you can eat which is great for large groups.“

“Based on the reviews, it's hard to determine if Old Mandarin is among the best or the worst restaurants in SF. So I decided to check it out for myself.
From the outside, it has a simple vibe and is very up-front about being a Halal restaurant (which I appreciate as a Muslim). Stepping inside, I can admire the variety of decorations and artwork that cover the walls. My party is quickly guided to a table and provided with menus. The waiter wasn't particularly chatty, but he was friendly, professional, & prompt, which is all I look for. He collected our orders and within a few minutes, the food was ready.
For entrees, I shared the Cumin Lamb Stir-Fry and the Eggplant in Spicy Garlic Sauce, both of which were recommended in . The lamb was flavorful and satisfying, while the subtle sweetness of the eggplant was beautifully complemented by the sauce. A simple side of white rice was all else that was needed to complete my meal.
I will now touch on price, which seems to be a contentious point in many reviews.
Firstly, a few have called out the "hidden" fees that materialized on the receipt, like the gratuity. However, the menu was pretty upfront about what they included.. (Now you may have an opinion on the existence of those fees, but that's probably outside the scope of a review..)
Secondly, I am stumped as to why the prices are considered higher than expected. I have never considered SF a "cheap" place to eat, and there are far worse offenders that should be called out before Old Mandarin. My guess is that this is more expensive than other Chinese "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants, but I cannot classify this as "merely" hole-in-the-wall due to the quality and the exclusive usage of Halal ingredients. I was pretty satisfied with the portions, and the per-person cost was ~$30, hardly the worst for an occasional dine-in meal.
One point I will agree with is that they should offer free water in a glass, instead of assuming "water" == $2 bottled water. I suppose Europeans would be used to this..
Overall, I was happy with my meal at Old Mandarin and look forward to future visits. Maybe I will have to revise my review but I hope not.“

“We went here for our one year anniversary! We ordered the Shabu Shabu and the Sukiyaki, both of which we felt were great tasting and well portioned. We saved our egg and some of our included rice for the rice porridge at the end of the meal, only to find out that they include an egg and rice specifically for the porridge! Our server, Isaac, did an amazing job at crafting a delicious porridge right in front of us, using one of the soup bases to do so (I think he should get a raise!). Overall an amazing experience and we will be recommending to others and coming back!“

“We came over to the hot pot side of HL Peninsula "Garden" and got our choice of tables at 11am for dim sum. HL Peninsula "Pearl" next door is the busier side. Note the tables on this side have the hot plate facilities. If you are like me, with long legs, you will be constantly bumping your thighs on the low hanging table due to the hidden hot pot bump on the table. We started with the crispy HK seafood pan fried noodles $23. It came drenched in gravy. The chef ruined this dish. Although it came with premium ingredients, the dish is called "crispy" noodles not "soggy" noodles. Why pan fry it in the first place when the gravy will negates the rich wok smokey flavor of the burnt ends? Rookie mistake. It is supposed to be soft in the middle and crispy on the outside. As for the other dim sums, they were fine - shrimp dumplings $7.80, abalone siu mai $13.80, stick rice chicken $7.80, spareribs $6.80, chicken feet $7.80 and chiu chow dumpling $6.80. Supposedly, there's a mandatory service fee. When I checked my receipt, it was not applied. I had to wave over the host and ask about it. Somehow it was not applied and I'm glad I checked. I'm not the type of customer that stiffs the service staff. Service was excellent with awesome views of the bay on a nice day.“

“Came here with a group of 9 and we got seated at two different tables. Each table had one giant pot to split.
Good:
- You can choose 2 soups that you want - I loved the tomato soup base since it was nice and savory but not too salty
- I liked how much variety there was in the AYCE options - the Ferris wheel of course is the most famous thing here
- The appetizers were pretty great - there were glass noodles and tons of sauces
- The mango coconut dessert was delicious!
- Nice and private back area for groups
Bad:
- Overall more expensive, about $45pp after taxes
Overall a really fun group activity!“

“Amazing Tai Shan restaurant!!! Recommendations:
1. Taishan beef bone soup (we also were told coconut chicken soup is their specialty) - this wasn’t salty, perfectly herbed, so yummmmmmyv
2. yellow eel clay pot rice - fresh water eels!
3. pork noodle roll - house made!
4. purple potatoes sesame balls - rare find usually it’s red bean
They said all dim sum is made in site and they use free range chicken - don’t get preserved pork cake
There as only 1 waitresss who was also the host and cashier. She was amazing and kind - management should hire at least 1 more person
And of course this place has less stars cuz it doesn’t cater to westerners but their is the obligatory kung pao plate but just ignore that. All the surrounding restaurants have tourists whereas this one is filled with Taishan people.“

“BEST coconut chicken hotpot I’ve ever had in the bay!!!!!
The soup was made with fresh coconut - they cracked the coconut and added the coconut water into our soup. We could also eat the coconut meat inside - it was so fresh.
And then they added chicken - the soup was just HEAVENLY. As a person who is from the region where coconut chicken was originated, I 100% approve its authenticity!!
And the price was soooo good too - $35 per person!“
