“Anyone can seemingly make sushi seem better by making it more complex, but the real test is whether they can take the simple and make it excellent. Sushi-Ki-ichi does just that. They stick to the simple offerings, leading to an experience that feels less Americanized than other Japanese restaurants. That's not to say I don't love some level of creativity, but you don't need it here. That's because the family that owns Sushi Ki-ichi wants to create an authentic meal - a notion that was confirmed for sure when we had a conversation with the owner. In fact, they take quality to the next level with their equipment and efforts they take to make sure that what they serve is the highest quality, including specific freezers for the fish. We didn't try Sushi Ki-ichi for the first couple of years because we figured that the previous restaurant, a Chinese buffet that had gone downhill and fallen off the cliff, had rebranded and reopened as something new. Now I feel that for those first couple of years, we missed out. This has quickly become my favorite place in Portland. I look forward to any trips I take across town from Vancouver to Tigard, and make a point to stop in and grab a bite.“

“Went here on a whim with a colleague and the atmosphere is gorgeous and refined but has a taste of izakaya to it! The food was absolutely delicious! I had the shrimp tempura maki and the wagyu (from Hokkaido, not American wagyu) nigiri and it was perfect! My colleague had the sashimi bento and bao bun. She fell in love with the bao bun and miso soup that came with the bento. Staff are super nice, attentive, and ready to answer any questions about the menu. I will definitely be back!“

“Have been coming here for almost 15 years. Highly recommend them, there have been occasions where the sushi does stay on a little longer than I’d like, but I’ve never had any problems after eating their food (other than eating too much because it’s so yummy).“

“I saw the negative reviews and was dismayed. BUT when we got there and saw the amount of people who were enjoying themselves. This amount of people would not have been and I was heartened by this. First off the service people. When we asked they were prompt. The sushi filled me up. The variety was astounding. I tried most of their different prepared vegetables dishes. Beef dishes as well. My wife ate her fill of various shellfish and other different kinds of seafood. The little dishes of ice cream was a nice touch for desert. It has a bit of everything for everybody. I highly recommend this restaurant. This is our favorite restaurant. Easy to find. Easy to get to. Lots of parking room.“

“Had my second visit to Kaede yesterday and it was just as incredible as the first. The omakase was outstanding — everything fresh, seasonal, and prepared with amazing attention to detail. The space itself is intimate, stylish, and has a quiet, understated elegance. “Large menu with high quality assortment of entrees, noodles, bento, and beverages. The traditional Japanese design aesthetic includes a sushi bar and table seating in a comfortable ambience perfect for quiet dining for individuals and groups. Service is attentive and prompt. The Chirashi Bowl is my favorite because fresh lemon, wasabi and shoyu sauce highlight the assorted sashimi and rice. As in Japanese cuisine, where it’s believed to have digestive benefits, a small vibrantly-colored Dendrobium orchid blossom is an edible, delicately-flavored garnish on each dish. 🌸“

“This hands down is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland OR. It the same quality of other top spots in the US like Nobu , O-Ya , and Morimoto . The location is perfect located in the Pearl district. The chefs are high quality and the fish is extremely fresh. They have a great but simple flavor approach. The service is warm, helpful, and appreciative. I always ask for Joy as she is a true professional and loves providing an exceptional experience on every visit.“

“It has been super hard to find good sushi near where I live, but this place delivered! And it's an authentic Japanese restaurant ( our server was Japanese and very nice, the back of the menu was also in Japanese). My boyfriend got their katsu curry and it looked, smelled and tasted just like the curry I had in Japan. Super happy with this place“

“We love this place! We eat here regularly, and truly enjoy the food, cocktails, service, and ambiance. The black cod miso yaki is our favorite dish - it's delicious and I highly recommend it. The veggie and shrimp tempura is the best I've ever had, with an interesting mix of eggplant, mushrooms, squash, lotus root, and onions - all lightly battered and served with a delightful dipping sauce (pour the dipping sauce on the black cod, it's so good). The cocktails, especially the Japanese 75 and the shiso gin drink (I can't think of the name), are well-balanced and mixed properly, and are very yummy. I tell everyone I know to try this place! Some of the food can seem adventurous if you're not familiar with Japanese fare, but it's all delicious and beautifully presented. Finally, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the owner is a very sweet and funny lady. All around, Sushi Kuni is a great dining experience and I highly recommend checking it out.“

“I was so happy to stop in here with my husband the other day on our daily walk around the city! We had passed by the day before and the staff (maybe the owner?) approached us, chatted with us, and invited us in! We had unfortunately just had our lunch and were sad to have to say we couldn't.

The service on our visit was lovely --- warm, inviting, and quick (but not too quick). You can tell a lot of love and pride goes into their restaurant and their food. The restaurant is small, but cozy. They have a cozy little outdoor seating area as well.

We ordered their Special A:
• salmon, snapper nigiri
• crunchy roll
• spicy tuna roll

We split it for our little brunch date, and we were so happy with how fresh everything tasted. Not just that, but every single item was noticeably different and flavorful in its own way. I'm not normally a big fan of nigiri, but this wasn't overly chewy or fatty. They had a wasabi paste that actually caught me by surprise with how delicious it was!

This was such a pleasant experience, and I'm looking forward to many more visits and sushi rolls. 💚“

“I would love to give this place five stars. They're are often not open during their scheduled business hours. I've been here multiple times in the last few weeks at 12:00, which is when they say they open yet they are closed. I'm sitting here right now at 12:15 and their food truck is closed.“

“A simple and quick place to get some hibachi for takeout or dine in. The menu is fairly simple with both sushi and hibachi items. We were in the area and needed something quick and had the chicken and noodles and the steak with rice. The food came out pretty quick. The steak was nice and tender.“

We also had the mushroom kara'age and the lobster kara'age and they too were exceptional and so different from any I've seen elsewhere. “Visited twice since I been here in Portland. Great vibe, nice, and friendly employees. I had been suffering depression all week and hadn't eaten. Stop by after doing my laundry. Had some miso soup, calamari, and Jack Daniels jack and jingle to drink. The bartender, the music, the ambience, and food was really good. Changed my mood and I got out later Saturday night and had a great Sunday. I highly recommend this place. My co-worker says the spicy tuna and jalapeno poppers are awesome. “Every time I come it’s unfortunately late like 30 min before closing late, but the lady who I believe owns the store or is a very dedicated worker is always there with a smile on her face ready for a customer, her kindness goes beyond food, she puts 110% into the customers and into the business.
