“GC gets docked a star for two reasons: 1) limited access because the line is so long (reservations are only taken for parties of 6+) and 2) the kung pao chicken is disappointing. As an institution, GC has been the best Chinese food in the area for decades. It was once so small you could shoot an arrow from the front door to the back wall. Its corner spot now on Oxford & Bancroft is massive in comparison, so now more people can wait to get in. The space is modern and bright, but the food is thankfully not fusion or fanciful. The food is exactly what it says on the door: Great China. From the plump (but crisped-skin) potstickers to the mu shu pork to the spicy green beans to the Peking duck, it is deliciously predictable. When I order ma po tofu, I know I'm going to get silken cubes of tofu in a thickened shiny spicy red sauce with ground pork in perfect proportion. Service is as friendly as Chinese gets and effortlessly efficient and fast. Parking sucks; it's downtown Berkeley, people. But if my San Fran friends long to come here, you know it's worth the hassle.“

We had ordered hot and sour soup, sesame chicken, spicy eggplant, chicken chow mein and spicy Thai fried rice in a clay pot. All dishes were excellent. The standouts were the sesame chicken and the soup. A friendly staff and a welcoming ambiance. Glad they are open again for indoor dining as we will be back more often in person than carrying out.“

You can add beef or lamb in your order at the counter (not available at the self serve area). I aimed for a medium plate of food and accidentally got myself a large plate by the time I got to the end of the self serve table. I just kept piling on item after item, oops! I did end up with leftovers, which I packed and happily finished for lunch the next day. I like heat, but the lowest level of heat for the stir fry was just about enough for me. Anymore heat and I don't think I could enjoy the food. I'd love there to be a level or two below this lol. I was expecting a mild, tinge of spice, but this felt like a full on medium. I liked my plate, but my stomach didn't like me afterward. Their strawberry tanghulu was good! Wanted to try a tomato version but the one left in the box didn't look really fresh. Looking forward to coming back to try more!“

“Solid Cantonese bbq spot in Oakland Chinatown. I've only ever gotten various meats for takeout from here, but everything I've tried was pretty good. My go to is their roast duck, which is $17.50 for half and $33.95 for a full. It's not cheap, but the meat is more flavorful and moist compared to some of the other bbq shops I've tried. Both the siu yuk (roast pork) and chasiu (bbq pork) go for $12.95/lb, so prices are reasonable. I don't like chasiu so I've never had that here, but their siu yuk is good as well. The best deal here is their spiced duck feet and wings, which only go for $3.95/lb. I love snacking on them! There's also seating here so you can order and eat here, but I've never eaten here as I prefer to bring the food home to eat.“

I called about an hour later because I really wanted Chinese food and the people in the lobby said I wouldn't be disappointed. I was NOT! Ordered 5-6 items, which were ready in less than 30 minutes. The only reason it is 4/5 is because this is a city parking lot and you have to pay to get a parking permit. Although it is very cheap. We paid like $1.50 for almost 2.5 hours!
