“I had a great experience at Maki Sushi while I was in town for work and happened to stumble in for dinner. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered the Sushi Deluxe, which came with 10 pieces of chef’s-choice sushi and a roll — I went with salmon and avocado. Everything was fresh, well prepared, and thoughtfully put together.

Pete, who is both the sushi chef and the owner, was excellent. We struck up a genuinely good conversation while I was eating, and he was friendly, complimentary, and clearly takes pride in what he does. Sitting at the bar felt welcoming and relaxed — the kind of place where you actually enjoy talking to the person making your food.

One small but really impressive detail stood out: Pete noticed I like a little wasabi with my tuna and offered me fresh wasabi without me even asking. For a sushi spot of this size, having fresh wasabi on hand is always impressive — it’s a great little treat, and usually something you only get if you know to ask. That kind of attentiveness says a lot.

The quality of the fish here is excellent. My favorite bite of the night was the salmon belly — rich, buttery, and delicious. The sushi here is definitely geared toward a more classic and approachable palate. It’s simple, clean, and done well, and the quality of the fish and service really shine.

I’m really glad I found this place and will absolutely come back next time I’m in the area. Thanks for a great experience, Pete — maybe next time I’m in town you’ll have some toro on hand just for me.

“For a long time, sushi was considered exotic and maybe a little scary. But now one can find it practically everywhere, even in the grocery store. Sushi is a Japanese dish referring to the sour flavor of the vinegared rice.

Translated from Japanese, meaning “looks beautifully flavored,” my partner and I decided to stop for a quick bite at this establishment situated on a busy Boulevard in Hasbrouck Heights.

Upon entering this clean and relaxed vibe as first-timers to Oishi Sushi, we had the entire place to ourselves and decided on a table by the window. They also have a small stool area in front of the sushi chefs.

Their extensive menu comprises a range of sushi rolls, sashimi, and bento boxes.

We opted for the Seaweed Salad, Avocado Roll, and Vegetable Lover Roll.

Food was excellent, presented well, and using the freshest quality ingredients. The Seaweed Salad was a tad salty; otherwise, everything tasted deliciously good. The price and portions were reasonable. The service was quick; the staff was friendly and courteous.

I appreciate Kimika’s creative menu with plenty of vegetarian options. Our waitress Kara/Cara was so friendly and helpful. I started with a Spritz that I think could’ve used some more bubbles, but the flavors were on point. The food was good but I felt like there could’ve been a bit more flavor. We tried the Truffle Carbonara, Soy Butter Bigoli, and Eggplant Katsu - I think the Bigoli was my favorite (think elevated lo mien). For dessert, we tried the lava cake, matcha French toast (would get it with ice cream if I were to over come again) and the Nutella Bombolocini (very creative - think mochi stuffed with Nutella).
Overall, I loved the concept of Kimika and the service, but I think there could’ve been just a tad more flavor in some of our dishes. Definitely a place to try once!“

The ramen was so good. Broth tasted amazing. Everything we got was perfect! Calamari, sushi all great.

I was a big fan of the seating area too. The paper cranes on the ceiling were a cool addition! Staff was also very nice. For a Saturday Lunch, there was no wait.“

“Ended up here accidentally on a layover: Hands down, the best ramen I’ve ever had (springy, slurpy perfection), amazing cocktails (if you like gin the Japanese 75 is a must try!), and whatever the whipped cream, creme brûlée’d banana dessert was tasted like heaven. I even ordered another tonkotsu ramen to go (all the way to Florida) to bring back to my fiancé. They separated all of it, packaged it so it wouldn’t leak, and wrote directions on specific timing for heating up each item! Very impressive service. I’ll be back again!“

“We came to Shogun Omakase to celebrate my birthday. It’s not our first time having Omakase but this was certainly the best experience. Chef Nick took such amazing care of us with a carefully curated menu to suit our preferences and explained not only the source of the fish but also some of the tweaks he made to bring out the flavor profiles of each piece. Some pieces just melt in your mouth and all the flavors are very well balanced. I wish I had more pictures to share but we were so immersed in the conversations and the tasting that time just flew by. It was truly a top notch omakase experience. Thank you Shogun Omakase! I decided to treat myself to celebrate the end of my doctorate program. It was a totally spontaneous decision, so I didn’t spend much time choosing a place. I opened Resy, typed “sushi midtown,” picked one of the top-rated spots, and honestly—I’m so glad I chose Sushi Yolo.

The food was great, but what really made the night special was Alex, the host. He was incredibly attentive and welcoming. I ended up having such a fun and meaningful conversation with him and another guest, Jerry—which is rare for me since I don’t usually talk to strangers. We talked about all kinds of things, and the vibe was just so easy and genuine.

Alex also kept pouring complimentary sake on the house, which was such a generous and thoughtful touch. This is one of those nights I’ll definitely remember—the atmosphere, the food, the conversations, and the company.

“Before I start my review I just want to add a tidbit about actually finding Kono. It's in a dimly lit, long, but narrow corridor, similar to streets you might find in Japan. If you think you found it you're probably right. It took me a minute to venture down this little alley.

Let's start with the atmosphere, it was a small venue but despite that you could easily have your own conversations. If you're sitting on the side like myself, you're in for the pleasure of watching them prepare all the food over the charcoal grill. Who doesn't love dinner and a show.

All of the food was fantastic and midway through you can even order some Alla carte items that may have not been on the chefs selection for that experience. Everything was cooked and seasoned to perfection. I really appreciated they also took the time to explain each cut and which seasoning or none may go with it.

All of the staff were not only friendly but just very professional and helpful. The hostess at the front was also extremely kind and friendly.

I would totally recommend this spot for a date, taking a client, or even just solo dining. Truly a hidden gem, I'm shocked this flew under my radar for so long.“

“The food was rich and flavorful. Some of the best eel, it was very tender. The sweet potato roll was crunchy and had so much flavor. The broth in the Ramen and Miso soup was not salty like most places and had a taste that complemented the dish.

The crunchy rice roll was the only dish that was average. It smelled much better than it tasted. The tuna and salmon tasted great but the actual fried portion on the rice was overpowering.“

We could hear extremely well the server which is uncommon in Japanese restaurants (maybe too much sake). The deserts looked amazing and the decorations were immersing us into anime culture. They have goku, pikachu, floating fish reminding us of a Japanese garden. The sky decoration comes to life when the New York breeze enters the Japanese chambers. “We went on a random weekday and had to wait in line for an hour to get in. But the food, music and atmosphere were all worth the wait. The music was amazing, very old school jazz with lots of improvisation. They have different artists every day so the experience is probably different. The music is not very loud and you can easily have a conversation. The menu is extensive, lots of interesting food and a separate section listing all their vegetarian options.“
