But I don’t know if that’s a new chef or what but the food is not tasting like it should no more, and their food use to taste really good ..If that’s a new chef he’s not doing something right cause it has no flavor in the chicken, and the chicken don’t taste fully cooked… I was on that toilet for two hours after eating it. what happened to the original chefs ??“

“Service: Told 2 hr waitlist by hostess. Got in at 45min mark. Was asked if community table was okay, and advised no. Sat at community table anyways. Asked to switch multiple times for a group of 3 but was advised no. Fyi, bar is no waitlist, first come first serve. Standing tables also available. Hostess alone was not vibin, short with words and unapproachable. All other staff were fantastic, including the cooks and waiters/waitresses.Food: fantastic. Classic and spicy, both can't go wrong. The classic bowl was especially deep in flavor profile. Chicken wings were crispy, flavorful, scrumptious.Minus the hostess(she needs a shot of happiness or something) everything else was fantastic.Dietary restrictions: Whole restaurant is peanut free. “Maki Kosaka has a lot of great things going for it, but has a few misses that make me unable to rate it the full 5 stars. A great note to start: I was able to get a reservation here day-of on a Friday night for 2 people easily. When you walk in, it's a 2 section restaurant with a small bar/waiting area up front, and a huge space in the back with the counter wrapping around the center chef space. Honestly surprised me how nice it looked. I ordered the grab roll set. 5 pieces rolls for $38. Most add ons are about $8-10, unless you get something more premium. While the price point for the set wasn't super high, I did expect slightly larger rolls. It was barely larger than a nigiri, just with more rice, and often too much sauce. I will say: the seaweed wraps used here are probably the best I've had. The fish - I can't say the same. Almost every fish from the set lacked unctuousness, and it felt like they were trying to make up for a cheaper cut by adding fats like avocado and mayo. I also ordered the crab and ikura roll, and the seared scallop roll. The crab and ikura was good, but a bit heavy on the mayo, and the seared scallop was texturally nice, but missing sweetness from the scallop. Uni roll was an $18 add on, and while satisfying to have uni, I've definitely had better in nyc. I think fish could've been a bit less mashed, with less sauce to really taste the flavor and textural difference. Finally, a pro and a con: service was FAST. Maybe a little too fast. The chef was pre-preparing rolls on the side in whatever order he wanted, and immediately setting the next roll on our plates before we were even done chewing the previous roll. We were able avoid feeling rushed by just not eating the roll immediately, but still felt like we couldn't wait too long if we didn't want to affect the freshness of the piece. I wish he would have slowed down to check in with us, rather than run away and get started on the next orders immediately. At least the wait staff was incredibly welcoming and patient with me and my friends' slow ordering speed. Didn't feel rushed to get out at all. Overall, good, but not great.“

The Temaki they serve is great for a 2 bite situation, making it really easy to share between 2… if that’s your thing. To be honest, coming here and getting the classic & signature is just as $ as getting delivery sushi, maybe a bit more expensive but it’s worth it. High quality ingredients & thought out flavors.Personal favorite temaki is the XO scallop. The whole entire restaurant is gluten free by the way, so that might win a lot of people over. The interior & vibe is definitely for a certain demographic and will become aged out within maybe a year or two. The interior is on the same note of that Tend instagram dentist place, and that’s not a compliment. The music they play reminds me of what they would play at like a retail store.Dietary restrictions: The entire restaurant is gluten free & can help gluten intolerance with their meal.“

“This restaurant was once awarded three Michelin stars for ten consecutive years and is also a representative of New York's fusion cuisine style. They primarily blend Japanese and French culinary elements to create an out-of-the-box and unforgettable dining experience. In 2023, due to disputes between the owner and the former chef, resulting in the departure of the ex-chef, they were removed from the Michelin three-star list, sparking considerable attention and comments from diners. From my recent dining experience at the restaurant, their removal from the Michelin three-star list does not imply that they no longer meet the standards of a Michelin three-star restaurant. Rather, it's because they are now operating as a "new restaurant" after reorganizing their chef team, which should be in a "grade pending" status. Personally, I feel that in the 2024 Michelin ratings, they have a very high chance of regaining Michelin star status, even if not immediately returning to three stars.Overall, this restaurant is highly suitable for diners interested in tasting fusion cuisine that blends elements from around the world, as well as for chefs in the food industry seeking new ideas. Additionally, the restaurant's service is excellent, even among fine dining establishments, as the staff seamlessly combine professionalism and friendliness. The dining environment in the restaurant is also excellent. Whether enjoying food preparation at the bar or having a more intimate dining experience at a table, both options provide a great experience. Here are some highlights of the restaurant's strengths:1. The seafood dishes at the restaurant are outstanding, with subtle seasoning that highlights the natural flavors of the seafood. Some small garnishes add a finishing touch to the dishes, akin to the layers of fragrance in perfume, leaving a memorable impression.2. The restaurant operates very efficiently, with each dish transitioning smoothly, akin to a symphony, where one movement ends and the next begins at the appropriate time.3. The service at the restaurant is excellent, with the staff knowledgeable about the dishes and beverages, smoothly and warmly introducing each dish, leaving a special impression on the diners.4. The desserts at the restaurant are delicious, whether it's pastries, ice cream, or fruit, all displaying creativity.5. The non-alcoholic drinks are excellent, providing a great option for those who do not enjoy alcohol.Furthermore, the restaurant may have some areas for improvement:1. The meat dishes at the restaurant seem to be less impressive than the seafood dishes, especially the wagyu beef dish, which is not cooked to perfection, failing to highlight the characteristics of wagyu beef.2. The sea urchin and waffle dish show great creativity in combining Asian and European ingredients. However, the waffle seems too soft and cannot effectively hold the uni; I almost dropped the uni while eating. Moreover, both the waffle and uni have a heavy sweet taste and soft texture, lacking impact. Perhaps replacing them with different bread and uni combinations would be better.3. While each seafood dish has excellent flavor, the seasoning and presentation seem somewhat repetitive, giving a sense of redundancy. Perhaps experimenting with more diverse elements and variations would be beneficial.4. The restaurant does not offer bread, a common feature in many European restaurants. Although bread may not be particularly expensive, I believe it is an essential part of French and many European restaurant cuisines. With bread, diners can dip it into the soup, creating a special dining experience and balancing the flavors of some heavier dishes. In conclusion, it was a very enjoyable dining experience. I hope the restaurant regains its Michelin star status in 2024 and continues to explore the path of fusion cuisine, breaking through the limitations of traditional rating systems and textbooks, and continuing to be a representative of New York cuisine and a unique restaurant in the world.“

It’s great that you can tell them you’re not into weird pieces like hearts and organs and they’ll substitute. The different pieces, though mostly chicken, all had different tastes. “My friends treated me and my wife to dinner here as an engagement present. We all had a wonderful time and thought the food was top notch. On top of the fresh fish and impeccable presentations, I really appreciated that Don was so accommodating to dietary restrictions. Many restaurants serving omakase are unwilling to make changes. I would absolutely come back again and recommend this to anyone.“

“Omakase is pretty good for the price. Most of their fish are fresh and flavors are good. Their cod, uni, and scallop were great. Their amberjack appetizer was not as fresh. I suspect most restaurants try to mask their less fresh items with sauce and other flavors and put it up as an appetizer. Atmosphere was crowded and noisy. Service was fast, taking away our plates before we were even done chewing. Didn't mind it too much but it did feel a little rushed.“

“March 2024:We went here a 2nd time for dinner. This time on the weekend. The restaurant was full. It was hectic. Unfortunately also with the service. This time the stress was clearly noticeable. The dishes were no longer always explained beautifully. That's a real shame, especially when it comes to the chef's work. You would have to take this time because it is not exactly standard sushi. The creations require explanation to be fully enjoyed. You didn't notice anything about the quality of the food. These were still at the highest level. My recommendation: one to two more people in service or otherwise accept fewer reservations. The noise level was also unpleasantly high because of all the people. That's why now only 4 instead of 5 stars.September 2023We were here for dinner. I recommend a reservation. We had the sushi and handroll menu. The quality of the sushi I selected was the best I have ever had, and I have been to many Japanese restaurants, including Masa in NYC. The quality was excellent and even with the small toppings, which fit perfectly, it was a really great experience. It was so good that we ordered some more sushi instead of dessert. The service was attentive. There is also a good selection of sake and Japanese beers here.“

“TL;DR: It was FIRE!!!This was by far the most amazing experience I have ever had. From the friendliest Chefs to the amazing flavorful melt in your mouth courses . Chef Ben and Chef Kong were very polite and educated us on what we were eating and had some lovely jokes. It was great to see everything prepared right in front of you and fresh. The pace of when the courses came out was perfect and not rushed at all. The place is small but understandable why they do the reservations the way they do it. I highly recommend going here!“

“Ordered a salmon donburi lunch set (7 pieces) for about $20, found it to be about average if not slightly above average. There was a nice portion of salmon roe/ikura included with the donburi, as well as a small side salad. I think for the price, it'll be hard to beat this quality. Nothing amazing by any means, but certainly decent and far from bad - a great value and reasonable price for sushi, I will be back to try the nigiri and sashimi!“

“By far the best omakase experience I've had in NYC. I went with my partner to celebrate our anniversary and we do omakase a lot since it's our favorite. This place blew our mind — you have to do the bougie omakase at the counter — SO AMAZING. The ambiance, staff, quality of food and chef was truly outstanding and so affordable. I'll be a regular here and can't wait to be back soon.“

“Has such a yummy and pleasant omakase experience in Astoria on a week night, thanks to That Place. The restaurant is so beautifully decorated and clean. The host/server was so attentive and sweet during the entire 1.5hr experience - my water/tea was refilled almost automatically after every sip. Same is also included in the omakase pricing which is really nice for drinkers ! The chefs worked together and created really delicious pieces- every one was super yummy. Their matcha ice cream and cheesecake were also so good ! Overall, was such a great experience and will definitely be back again for a weeknight or weekend dinner.“

“Pros: Good food! After a few visits we tried all of the small plates and rolls on the menu and everything was delicious. Fun cocktails. Cozy and comfortable. (Try to get seated on the perimeter of the space, the tables in the center of the room can feel a little claustrophobic.) Fairly priced. Cons: Uneven service. On two separate visits, the server forgot my drink. The server on our last visit was downright surly; she really seemed like she did not want to be there at all and spent most of the evening ignoring us. And, also during our last visit, we almost turned around and left because it looked like the place was closed. It was dusk, all the lights and signage were turned off, tables and chairs were stacked out front and a large pile of cardboard recycling was waiting to be picked up. I only saw that there were lights and people in the back of the space when I was out front.“

“Absolutely my favorite place for sushi. When you order the omakase you aren't just served different cuts of fish you may be familiar with like bluefin tuna but rather get a series of carefully crafted pieces combining flavors you'd never expect. Whenever friends visit New York, I always suggest Sushi “

“This is true Japan. Real Japan. A modest restaurant of the highest quality. A small space on a side street. This is authentic Japan. There are two tables and a counter - 12 seats total. The chefs are right there. The server too, all are soft spoken and focused on their craft. The food is... The food is... The food is so good. So, so good. The sashimi melted, balanced with the spicy thing. The mazeman incredible, full of umami and flavor. The ramen healed my soul :)Do me a favor if you go... Eat, enjoy and leave. Be efficient... Be respectful. Be Japanese. It's a small space, they're too nice to move you along, but c'mon, allow them to serve more people and make more money“

Of course we had to get a lobster dish which we ended up getting two orders of, the restaurant itself is so beautiful. As soon as you walk in you see a beautiful scenery. The service was good cant complain about anything they were able to accommodate for my moms birthday and bring out a cake which was very nice and there dessert selection is very unique as well! Overall I would definitely come back, this restaurant is definitely on the pricer side but it definitely worth it once you take that first bite!“

“I have been here for both dinner and lunch. I prefer the dinner menu over their lunch menu because of the bigger portions and wider variety, but the dinner menu is available at lunch as well. For dinner, my partner got the braised short rib which he was very pleased with. I got the set of four hand rolls which all tasted fresh and delicious. The hand rolls are more like open sushi tacos. There was a lot of filling so I ended up being fuller than I expected. For lunch, we had the lunch bento set which included a small portion of an entrée, a miso soup or salad, and a hand roll of your choice for about $25 depending on your entree. The teriyaki is on the milder side. Overall, I am happy to have this little gem in Brooklyn. Besides the good food, service has always been exceptional too.“
