“I’ve been here only a few times in the last few years but I came in last week and I was pleasantly surprised!
Stand out fish is the Smoked Ceviche. It is a must if you come here $35 is a little pricy but the amount of fish they gave you is 💯 worth it. Normally it’s just smoked salmon wherever you go but I loved the mixed fish option here.
Nigiri’s sushi are comparable to Haminohana and Hatsayuki but I do think the prices are a little higher. Black cod and Salmon Belly are chef’s kiss!
I didn’t try any sushi rolls, no comment there.
Hand rolls are also equivalent to the restaurants I mentioned above.
Ube ice cream is good. I believe it’s sourced locally.
So, if you’re in this area I would say give it a try. Prices are higher but there’s more seating which is nice.“

“This was my third visit, and I have not been disappointed by any aspect. The service is great, the staff are friendly, the food is fantastic - try the spicy edamame! - and the price is very decent. My wife chose this visit to help culminate her birthday, and it didn't disappoint.....again.“

“Victor was our waiter for both our first and second times eating here, and he has always made our experience just that much better. The food here is ridiculously curated to exceed expectations no matter what you order. Highly recommend for a casual night out or a celebratory dinner.“

“I finished a long shift at work and I was in search of fresh quality sushi for a solo dinner. It was after 10pm on a Tuesday, Yellow tail sushi bar did not disappoint. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I sat at the bar and asked the Bartender for sushi recommendations. I ordered 2 rolls , sashimi and an appetizer. Bill was about $90. I have had some sushi places at half the price with equally high level of fish , but most of those places I frequent close at 9pm. I would definitely return on another hungry night. I highly recommend trying Yellowtail sushi bar and appreciate the chef choosing to stay open late.“

“What a phenomenal meal. Maji has the best rice of any sushi spot in Dallas which, believe it or not, has such an impact on flavor. Their fish is fresh, their avocados are amazing. There is clear intention behind their ingredients that translates into a wonderful meal.“

“We had an amazing experience at Yujo. Tony went out of his way to make my birthday special from complimentary appetizers to desserts. The fish was so fresh and sushi rice was on point and better than any Japanese restaurant I’ve frequented in Dallas. They spent 4 hours just making their sushi rice. Highly recommend and will definitely be back!“

“I’ve lived in Texas for over eleven years and watched the dining scene change considerably. Through all of that, I keep coming back to Chef Otaka-san. There’s a reason.
These days, many new restaurants seem more focused on rankings, expansion, and hype than on staying true to their principles. I respect Chef Otaka-san for doing the opposite, staying focused on what omakase is supposed to be and what he genuinely cares about. Japanese people aren’t eating sushi three times a day; they enjoy yakitori just as much. That, too, is their culture, and Chef Otaka-san’s inspiration comes from that authenticity, not from California rolls designed to please the masses. For diners who care about the essence of a true omakase experience, mabo is a place you should not skip.
This is not a restaurant chasing influencer hype or free publicity. It’s for guests who genuinely value the experience who are willing to pay for his talent and creativity so he can transport you, for a couple of hours, to another part of the world without leaving Dallas.
Back in my earlier days here, there were more places that felt this sincere and grounded. As things grow more superficial, I almost feel sad that restaurants like this are becoming rarer. That’s part of why I felt compelled to write this review: sometimes the quiet achievers deserve to have their value recognized.
I’ll admit I hesitate to share my hidden gem. I don’t enjoy competing for reservations, and a selfish part of me wants to keep this spot easy to book, especially compared to some overvalued places out there. But when I think about how long Chef Otaka-san has been in Texas, nearly four decades, he deserves far more recognition than he’s received. He has been an ambassador of sorts, giving those of us in Dallas the opportunity to experience this level of omakase for years.
Today was my fiancé’s birthday, and I brought him here because I wanted him to experience what I think of as the “Teppo feeling” I had when I first moved to Texas. For me, it was more than just dinner; it was reconnecting with a memory and a standard of sincerity that has become rare.
I hope more people come to understand the depth of what Chef Otaka-san has given to this community and that he, in turn, recognizes his own value rather than feeling discouraged by the rankings and metrics that third-party reviewers throw around. He may not be the most talkative showman (which I appreciate, sometimes I don’t want conversation), but if you ask him a question and approach him as a genuine human being, I think you’ll understand what I mean. I hope this helps someone else experience what my fiancé and I had today.“

“I made a reservation for my daughter and her boyfriend to celebrate her 21st birthday. I called and spoke to the manager and told him what the occasion was and asked if they could make it special for them The staff exceeded my expectations. They had some appetizers waiting for them when they arrived and brought out a birthday dessert. My daughter said it was a great experience and the food and service were excellent.“

“I had the omakase. and was disappointed with the fact there was a heavily fried dish of shrimp and corn that came out mid point of the experience. The sashimi was pretty good but, not too much thought was put into it. Other than the two kind of misteps my overall experience was amazing! the staff was helpful and the flavors were fun! I highly recommend the sesame mousse for dessert and the sea bass melted in your mouth and the soba noodles with the various dipping sauces were to die for ♡“

“This was my second visit for take out/drive through lunch and I am still shocked at how delicious, fresh and well priced the food is at this unassuming restaurant. They made a tiny mistake with my order and were so generous in making it right that they are now stuck with me as a customer and cheerleader. If you’re traveling on 635 in east Dallas, this is such an easy stop. Do yourself a favor and try it!“

“First time here. Ordered takeout due to pandemic. Came on a Friday evening around 7:30pm. Ordered 4 rolls: rainbow roll, dragon roll, Greenville roll, & spicy tuna kiss roll. Presentation is nice. Fish quality is smooth, creamy, and does not have a frozen multiple times texture. Flavor is nice. Roll pieces are actually bite sized and -just- fit in your mouth. (I have a small mouth, so they may fit better in an average person’s mouth). Kind of disappointed with the minuscule amount of wasabi & ginger that came with each dish, but wasabi taste fresh & has adequate spice. Pickled ginger is quite sweet. Overall, everything was good. I’d recommend & I’d come back.“

“This is one of my favorite spots. The owners are so warm and personable—they’ll remember you if you visit often, which makes the experience feel special. It’s a cozy, intimate sushi spot where the owner prepares fresh sushi right behind the bar. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful, perfect for unwinding, and the pricing is very fair.“

“So glad we found the BOGO Omakase deal that they were having. My husband and I tried this place out and it was so good! We got the 15 course option, and loved everything served. The cocktails and mocktails were also on point. There is free parking nearby in the underground garage. This place is in the Dreys Hotel bar area. Would definitely come back and recommend!“

“Hibiki exceeded all expectations! Our server, Shade, provided exceptional service—attentive, professional, and friendly throughout our entire visit. We ordered the Who’s Your Daddy and Holy Moly rolls, both of which delivered the perfect level of spice and flavor. The sushi was impressively fresh, beautifully presented, and truly a highlight of the evening. The restaurant’s ambiance was warm and inviting, with a distinctive New Orleans-inspired atmosphere in the heart of Deep Ellum. Every detail, from the quality of the food to the attentive service, made for an outstanding dining experience. Hibiki is highly recommended for anyone seeking elevated sushi, bold flavors, and impeccable hospitality.“

“After a busy day of moving to a new place, I saw this place on the way home. Had to stop with my boyfriend and I’m glad we did! The lady working was so kind. She let us know she could make our bowls spicy if we wanted. I got the Bibimbap bowl and it was sooo yummy, fresh and such a big portion. My bf got the chicken & beef teriyaki bowl. We both enjoyed our choices. Today is a heavy leg day and we really needed a high protein option. We’ll be back!“

“I really wanted to like this place. We got an appetizer, drinks, and 3 rolls. The Crab Dynamite and the mt axiom rolls were really good but we also got the crunchy salmon and it was burnt. We asked to have it taken off the bill and was told no but we could have a to go box and 20% off the one role. Definitely won't be returning.“

“First time here. Four of us to try a variety of sushi.
Food - We ordered different rolls, miso soup, and my son ordered a tuna tower. He judges a sushi place by the quality of the tuna tower. One of the best he's had. All the rolls were good and fresh. Very nice presentation (sorry about no pics, we were very hungry). Miso soup was average. Pretty standard sushi rolls and sashimi across the board, but they do have no rice options for the keto crowd. Panic roll was delicious. No alcohol and just canned sodas and bottled drinks. Prices were very good.
Service - You order at the register, no table service. Very quick to deliver our meals, but we were the only table. English language a bit of a barrier with the staff. Customer service not a strong point, but not unfriendly either.
Atmosphere - Quintessential hole in the wall. Clean restaurant and restrooms. Just a handful of tables and a small sushi bar seating area. More of a take-out vibe than a sit-down restaurant.
Overall - Will definitely be back, but for take-out instead of table dining. It's on the way home and easily accessible off of Arapaho.“
