Johnny was behind the counter today - courteous, professional, and friendly. Such fast service and such tasty food. “The food was outstanding! We however went for our anniversary meal, and were wisked in and out in 50 minutes! Plates were wisked away seconds after they came, we literally twice had the food in our hands mid-bite when plates were taken away, some with food still in them. We tried to slow it down and keep food in the plates so we could talk, but as soon as we lifted a piece, whish- gone and another plate in its place. Turning over tables overtly or bad timing, I'm not sure.“

“We caught an early seating in the parklet. It's fine for a parklet, inside has much more character, but we were outside. The wind picked up a bit and the often parklet downside of windy was true.

We got their oyster, clams combo and added a special of fried cod and potato salad along with shrimp salad and garlic bread.

The oysters were really good, we had 2 each of the 3 types they had that day. Really tasty with a great layout and description of what to expect. Personally I really liked the vinegar shallot sauce.

The clams in that sauce... It was the absolute star of the evening. We booked the bread, and decided to save some for take out to make some pasta with it at home. Super good clams.

The fried cod and potato salad. The cod was flaky, but it was a bit generic in flavor. Not bad, not great. The potato salad was significantly better than the fish on this one.

Garlic bread was on the crisp side, good but a little more doughy would be better for soaking up the clam sauce.

The salad was our least favorite dish, honestly I suspect the soup is the way to go here, but we didn't try it on this visit.“

Nonetheless, John's Historical Grill is the ultimate San Francisco experience and I am happy to see it thrive. Richard Alexander would like it even more if the baseball hat and t-shirt crowd was sequestered but they seem to dominate and the customer is always right and the house was filled Saturday for dinner - a testament to its reknown.“

“Hands down our favorite go-to restaurant when we are in the city going out to dinner, or when we are looking to take out-of-towners someplace truly unique, or when we are looking to bring the most delicious dinner home. The seafood is as fresh and high quality as it gets, served in the most unique way. Start with the chowder, packed with a wide variety of shellfish, spiced just right with a little kick to it, neither New England nor Manhattan, they have invented a new broth that is both rich and flavorful while being light. The Scallops are a must try. They simply melt in your mouth with a burst of complex flavors. The small plate tostadas meld flavors and textures you just can’t find anywhere else. Although it is located on Divisadero in a multi-block long string of restaurants, the atmosphere inside has the feel of the most comfortable neighborhood bistro. Impecable service all at a very reasonable price for the quality and the creativity and joy the food will bring to your palate.“

The menu is expanded but still simple, good cocktails. The food has definitely improved a couple of levels and the prices are great for what you get. “We started with the Chips & Dip as a small appetizer. The chips were crunchy and flavorful, and the sour cream was fluffy and not too heavy.

Next, we ordered oysters and the tuna melt. The oysters were so fresh and delicious that we ended up ordering another dozen. The tuna melt was also really good, served on a sourdough roll that made it quite easy to eat.

The service was excellent, the server was friendly and welcoming throughout our visit.

We started with the oysters which were fresh and shucked perfectly. No shells, so clean.

Then we ordered the bread and butter - thick slices toasted just right with butter and flaky salt. Truly everything you wish for out of a bread and butter scenario and the snack you need after walking around the city all day.

Then the 3 best dishes we’ve have in SF:

Mussel Conserva Toast - I could’ve eaten 4 of these it was that good. Personally my favorite plate of the night. Mussels were smokey and the fennel provided a light balance. Get this if you go here! Sleeper hit

Beef Tartare - the execution on this was 10/10. Flavors were so balanced, it is exactly what you want when eating a tartare. I will dream of this. And the homemade chips with it!! No notes

Steak & Fries - the only way to describe this was exquisite. So flavorful, so tender…one of those plates that looks unassuming but your eyes go wide at the first bite. The fries were salted just right and so crispy. Again no notes

Food aside, the service was incredible, everyone who worked there seemed to genuinely enjoy themselves, were attentive, and provided suggestions on the menu. I would be shocked if this place doesn’t blow up. It’s a hidden gem (for now)“

“We had shrimp cocktail, French onion soup, wedge salad, 20 oz ribeye with a baked potato, and a banoffee tart for dessert. We split each course and the waitstaff had the chef plate it all separately for us which made sharing easier.“
