“It has been a long time since I’ve gone to a teriyaki restaurant because my wife has resisted it. Our friends wanted to go here and, I was excited, and my wife agreed. We both had the chicken teriyaki lunch special, which come with chicken teriyaki on a bed of white rice, a side of either sweet and sour chicken or three pot stickers, and a small side salad with a house dressing. I just assumed the sweet and sour chicken was what I receive in a Chinese restaurant. Boy was I wrong! It was like way over cooked fried chicken. It was so hard that it was difficult to eat and there was absolutely no sweet or sour flavor. My wife said the pot stickers were soft but did not taste very good. Fortunately, the teriyaki chicken was very good and adding the sauce to the rice made the rice very good. The house sauce on the salad was very good. The lunch special came with a soft drink and the entire lunch was $13.50. The lady behind the counter was very nice but speaks Japanese and very little English. I tried to tell her the chicken was almost inedible but she had no idea what I was saying. We do not live in Portland so there is almost no chance we will eat there again but I would recommend the chicken teriyaki with fried rice, which our friends had and they said it was very good.“

“On my way home, I stopped at Donburi Factory to get my last poke fix for 2025. Was greeted by a delightful young lady, Olivia who took my order. We had a very pleasant chat while I waited for my order which didn't take long .
When I got home, I inhaled my Poke Don which was of course, fresh and tasty ! Olivia recommended some spicy mayo to add to the Poke and she was spot on. So, thanks Olivia for the spicy mayo tip and for being so personable.
Happy New Year. Doug L“

“Anyone can seemingly make sushi seem better by making it more complex, but the real test is whether they can take the simple and make it excellent. Sushi-Ki-ichi does just that. They stick to the simple offerings, leading to an experience that feels less Americanized than other Japanese restaurants. That's not to say I don't love some level of creativity, but you don't need it here. That's because the family that owns Sushi Ki-ichi wants to create an authentic meal - a notion that was confirmed for sure when we had a conversation with the owner. In fact, they take quality to the next level with their equipment and efforts they take to make sure that what they serve is the highest quality, including specific freezers for the fish. We didn't try Sushi Ki-ichi for the first couple of years because we figured that the previous restaurant, a Chinese buffet that had gone downhill and fallen off the cliff, had rebranded and reopened as something new. Now I feel that for those first couple of years, we missed out. This has quickly become my favorite place in Portland. I look forward to any trips I take across town from Vancouver to Tigard, and make a point to stop in and grab a bite.“

“I picked a lunch spot on a total whim after flying in from Texas, then discovered the best comfort karē outside of Japan. Absolutely incredible, rich flavors that speak for themselves. Nothing is hidden or muddled; the recipe is full bodied, served insanely quick, and with the hospitality of an old friend you haven't seen in years (big shoutout to one-man army Mr. Makoto Yoshino). If you're a veteran that's ever been stationed in Japan, pair this up with Jinro and a Page 11 and it's like you're back in Oki! Seriously though, food was so good I had a borderline religious experience. 11/10 I'll always come here when I visit Portland.“

“The husband and I were on a ramen rampage, and the weather was our perfect excuse. Then, out of nowhere, we stumbled upon this restaurant. The service was spot-on, the food arrived in record time, and that ramen? Sheer perfection. The broth was a flavor bomb, the chashu was tender and divine, and those noodles? Freshly made and sublime. We left feeling like we just discovered ramen nirvana.“

“Conveyor belt-sushi is the best! I love watching the colorful food wander by at pace, picking and choosing an item or two every now and then. Super mellow and fun. Can be busy at lunch but if you are alone it's usually easy to find a spot at at the 'bar'.“

“Good sushi place that isn't going to break the bank. I liked everything I ordered here with the exception of the spicy tuna rolls, but that's probably more of a personal preference thing rather than a lack of quality. The sushi is great but I recommend the dragon rolls (for taste) and the California rolls (for cost). The poke bowl was good too in my opinion, but what took me by surprise was the miso soup option which I liked quite a bit.“

“Food was phenomenal. My udon noodle dish was among the best I’ve had. Truly great. The service was unfortunate, with no single employee seeming to take responsibility for the table. Food came out at wildly different times, including different components in a single dish.“

“Came here with friends for dinner and had a great time. Highly recommend the chicken karaage, super crispy outside, and juicy&tender inside! The omakase sashimi was very fresh, and the texture was amazing. They also have a nice selection of Japanese style beers, I tried matcha IPA which was surprisingly special and really good:::)))))) Loved the vibe and the food, definitely will come back again!“

“Phenomenal food. Great ambience. Incredible team. Inspiring story starting with chef Juan that expands into locally-sourced food, seasonality, and supporting women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ producers. As a solo traveler, the warmth and family-like atmosphere made this experience memorable.
It's also not as common to find a tasting menu inspired by Mexican roots, but this was one of the best meals I've enjoyed on the west coast. If you think lobster and mole won't work, you're missing out. Highly recommend!“

“Kokiyo Teriyaki has quickly become one of my favorite spots for delicious, comforting, and consistently great food. Every time I visit, I’m impressed by the quality, the flavor, and the warm service that make this place truly stand out.
The moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a friendly atmosphere and a team that genuinely cares about their customers. The service is always fast, polite, and attentive, and they make you feel welcome whether you’re dining in or picking up a quick meal to go.
Now, the food — absolutely fantastic. Their teriyaki is some of the best I’ve had anywhere. The chicken is always tender, perfectly cooked, and coated in a rich, flavorful sauce that strikes the perfect balance between sweet and savory. The portions are generous, the rice is always perfectly fluffy, and the vegetables are fresh and cooked just right.
I also love their spicy dishes — they have just the right amount of heat while still keeping all the flavor. The yakisoba, gyoza, and katsu are also excellent choices, each prepared with care and full of satisfying taste.
What really makes Kokiyo Teriyaki special is the consistency. No matter what you order or when you come in, the food is always delicious, the portions are always big, and the experience is always positive. You can tell the owners and staff take pride in what they do, and it shows in every detail.
If you’re looking for amazing teriyaki, friendly service, and a meal that always hits the spot, Kokiyo Teriyaki is the place to go. I highly recommend it and will definitely keep coming back!“

“We love this place! We eat here regularly, and truly enjoy the food, cocktails, service, and ambiance. The black cod miso yaki is our favorite dish - it's delicious and I highly recommend it. The veggie and shrimp tempura is the best I've ever had, with an interesting mix of eggplant, mushrooms, squash, lotus root, and onions - all lightly battered and served with a delightful dipping sauce (pour the dipping sauce on the black cod, it's so good). The cocktails, especially the Japanese 75 and the shiso gin drink (I can't think of the name), are well-balanced and mixed properly, and are very yummy. I tell everyone I know to try this place! Some of the food can seem adventurous if you're not familiar with Japanese fare, but it's all delicious and beautifully presented. Finally, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the owner is a very sweet and funny lady. All around, Sushi Kuni is a great dining experience and I highly recommend checking it out.“

“My partner and I have been coming to this location for 15 years. It’s consistently been very good. Sushi that shoots above its price, regarding the quality. Last night we came in and got an assortment of nigiri, a couple rolls, and uni. The chef was thoughtful about what order he prepared everything, the meal finishing with the uni. Everything was delicious. For the amount of money spent, it’s difficult for us to think of a place that would be as satisfying.“

“This place is one of the best teriyaki places in the entire area of downtown portland. Generous portions worth every single penny ❤️
The charred chicken pieces are extremely perfect and juicy, dressed in perfect homemade teriyaki sauce.
The pot stickers on the other hand, have the gingery aroma flavor, makes it more palatable and appetizing at the same time.“

“One of the best Teriyaki places in the area.
The young gentleman working the front was just amazing. He was managing a VERY fast flow of customers and kept very pleasant and professional demeanor.
Like everyone has said, portions for the price are pre-pandemic quantities and the quality of the chicken was excellent. It was cooked with prefect char.
Salad was fresh and plentiful (iceberg--but at least fresh--unlike my last teriyaki experience.)
I'll definitely be back.“

“if you want to eat fish, they have fish and definitely don't skimp on the portions. If all you care about is the food tasting good and its reasonably priced and good portions, this is the sushi spot. If you want your food to look fancy and be expensive then i would recommend eating elsewhere. I'm not saying the sushi looks bad, sometimes the rolls are a little sloppy and fall apart. I love unagi and i love dragon rolls. Do NOT order the dragon roll here it makes me sad. Their salmon is really good though. Would recommend the spider roll.
Side note:
4.7 stars on google with over 900 reviews! that would make this one of the best sushi shops in the Portland area. There are some restaurants that have 4.8-5 stars but significantly less reviews.“

“I had to use the bathroom and they let me without buying anything. I then ordered the Oregon Roll just to try. I normally don't like Sushi, but it was so good I might be into it now. I'll have to go back and try some more or whatever... It's good 👍“

“I love me some teriyaki bowl, and because I am on the road all day with my job, I get the opportunity to try several different restaurants on a monthly basis. This is one of the best, and Jonathan and his team make fantastic food and have created a very friendly environment. I will definitely be returning.“
“This place was such a pleasant surprise during our trip. The food tasted great, the prices were reasonable, and it felt like a very authentic Japanese restaurant. The rice bowl in the photo originally came with tuna, scallops, and salmon. Since I don’t eat tuna, I asked to replace it with salmon, and it worked perfectly. The portion was generous and the price was very fair.
Another must-order item is the small sukiyaki pot, which was just a little over eight dollars. It was surprisingly good, even though I forgot to take a photo. These two dishes were definitely the highlights for me.
From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, the staff greet you in Japanese, which really adds to the atmosphere. Overall, it was a great experience and a place I’d happily visit again.“

“I had a nice, relaxed experience here the other evening. It was somewhat busy but the server got my order quickly. I enjoyed some quality sake while waiting for my sushi. The wait, not so long, was worth it. I loved the Playboy roll, with seared tuna, and the Mango Tango roll even more. The miso soup was good; the decor and atmosphere was pretty cool. But the sushi was delicious. I'd highly recommend this restaurant. I'll be back for sure.“

“We really liked the service and the food quality! We were surprised they had a lot of appetizers with seafood not like other sushi restaurants near by. I liked their variety of sake as well. The waitresses were so kind explaining the menu and it was helpful to make our decision for the delicious meal! They have so many rolls so you will definitely need some recommendations and I'm sure it will suit your taste! It was our first visit and we will definitely go back to sushi avenue!“

“We went for the first time last week, when our normal teriyaki restaurant was shut for a couple weeks. Their food was excellent. Ordered the chicken and beef teriyaki and pork fried rice. It was all good, but there was a seasoning in the chicken teriyaki that I found odd. Dont know what it was, but it just didnt taste right. The restaurant itself is ok, just a normal strip mall restaurant. Nothing special but nothing bad either. Service was ok, we ordered ours to go so I cant speak to the in restaurant service.“

“As a frequent visitor to Japan, I long for the authentic intersection between food, atmosphere and service. But mostly food.
Yuzu brings a good majority of this to the table. I found myself flashing back to an izakaya in Morioka (minus the tabaco filled air). Atmosphere is a check.
I started with the karrage, which came out perfect. Using the Japanese double-fry method, it's more of a steam than a fry. This leaves you with a thin but crispy outside and very juicy, not dry chicken, with very little grease. The aoili sauce really added to the overall flavor.
The sashito peppers weren't overly seasoned nor overly spicy, but rather had a good umami flavor.
The kimchi cheese spring rolls were the only non-Japanese item I ordered. They were unique and very flakey, but the flavors and textures did not mix too well.
I also ordered the cold soba. This is one of the rare time I enjoyed a cold soba. The flavor wasn't overpowering and the texture had a somewhat firm but melt apart texture.
Finally, they have a rotating donburi and this visit I scored as they had my favorite Japanese dish - the Katsudon. This was one of the best Katsudonburi I have had in the US. The seasoning had the perfect umami balance with sweetness. The Katsu was crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle, and most importantly the egg was just set and a little runny (I prefer more runny but in the US this is a good compromise to the usual scrambled egg you get on top)
Overall fantastic food and atmosphere. The staff were friendly, quick, and attentive.
Finally, we arrived 30 mins before they opened on a Saturday night, and it was practically empty when we entered and still had tables available when we were leaving.
Highly recommend!“
