“Cafe Phoenix has been an Arcata staple for many many years. This women owned cafe is one of the best places to eat in Humboldt. The atmosphere is great and cozy on a rainy winter day and especially nice on the back patio or in the yard while the sun is out. Their food is all organic, and much of it is sourced from local farmers and butchers. The food is good for the gut. And the owner’s recipes are original and tasty. My go-to dishes are the fried rice, the breakfast burrito, many different smoothies, and Phoenix potatoes. Occasionally the potatoes have been burnt and I too have experienced some dishes being over salted like other reviewers have complained about, but that’s not consistent enough to steer you away. The new addition of, Smoked is too recent to give a solid review, but it seems to have potential. Glad we have Cafe Phoenix in our little town to rely on.”

“Spacious area with outdoor seating, excellent selection of inebriants + nonalcoholic options, adjacent food truck with insanely yummy food + outdoor seating (but not pet-friendly 🥲).

On a Saturday afternoon in November the place was lightly filled, and bar service immediate. Truck food was fresh-prepared so took a bit, but you get a buzzer so no need to stand around twiddling thumbs.

I had the vegan Yogi Bowl which was outstanding (and spendy at $18, but it was enough for two meals) and thoroughly enjoyed the array of ingredients & flavors. 🥗🍚🍲

This is the only bar I’ve found so far that carries both a Belgian Tripel (in the correct glass) + cider + kombucha + root beer on tap. 👏🏼👏🏼

The only downside is that the view from the patio is basically a wire fence & parking lot (or the nearby thoroughfare), but if you angle your seating you can see forested mountains⛰️ in the background. 😉”

“I have lived in Arcata for over two years and I don't know how I haven't been here yet. On the outside it is unassuming. But to my delight I enjoyed a big burger and fries. I thought of Toni's across the street and I feel like Pepper's burgers are bigger, better quality, and CHEAPER and fries come with the burgers, duh, as they always should. The fries are also better, not the ore-ida nonsense you get at Toni's.

This place has lots of options, feels like a small town diner, and food comes in big portions and at least what I got, the western bacon burger, was pretty good.”

“What a great sushi place! So glad we stumbled upon this out of the way super tasty off the beaten path sushi place in Arcata. It’s a mom n pop shop atmosphere but the food is fine dining style. We both got a roll with salmon in it, can’t remember the names but they were both delicious. The Miso soup, tempura veggies and edamame are all bomb too. Made a mistake of ordering three sakis, they came in a nice size bottle with more than enough for the three of us. Portions are generous and the food is fresh. Got the seaweed salad this trip and it was great, nice roasted sesame flavor. This is now our favorite place to get sushi in Arcata”

“I was on a strict Keto diet, which worked in some ways and not in others. My gastrointestinal issues markedly increased and for some reason, I developed gout and my nails softened and began tearing. After a year of trying what I could I found if I raised my gluten level to 50 grams instead of 25, by eating ground whole wheat sourdough bread, all my problems vanished. For me, I found the best bread for those issues were eating Becks sourdough bread. Whether whole wheat sliced or Country sourdough, my stomach and nails are no longer ailing me. And, it's not just a "miracle cure", it's the best bread I've ever eaten. To be fair, I've never been a big bread eater. I could take it or leave it, but Beck's Bread is incredibly delicious and my body loves it. I literally crave it. There's also a rye bread Rhonda makes with added sunflower seeds that makes my body very happy. My only problem now is keeping my portion steady at 2 slices per day to maintain my ketosis.”

“Great cocktails and maybe the best king crab legs I’ve ever had. On a long Thanksgiving road trip picking up our CPH freshman, we finally ate at SALT. Had to sit at the bar because we had no reservations and too cold outside. The mixologist Elizabeth was quite friendly. I had the Lotus Eater and found it to be one of the most nuanced cocktails I’ve ever had. The king crab was same price as in Seattle but was delicate and not over cooked. The New England clam chowder was better than most seafood restaurants. The salmon cakes were tasty but would have liked a little moisture/less crumbly. After so many seafood restaurants with the same flavors, SALT stood out. Unexpected but very appreciated in little Arcata. More cosmopolitan than expected. Can’t wait to eat there on our next visit but it could be awhile since our son likes university life without parents”

Not sure why that happens so often. But great pizza. Just be sure to check it.”

You can get fried tofu subbed in any of your old favorite dishes (looking at you orange tofu and sweet and sour tofu). Good portions served family style and you always get a box of white rice with your entrees as well. Everything you’re looking for in good reliable spot to order some Chinese food. The workers are quick and professional and the food is flavorful. Make sure to check out the coconut buns and vegetable chow fun!”
