“Easily one of the best pizza shops in the Bay. However, the girl at the cash register needs to learn how to manage and triage customer requests better.

I asked for extra burrata on my pizza and was completely willing to pay for it. She looked at me dumbfounded, as if I had asked her to send a rocket to the moon. She said it was the first time anyone had ever asked for that and that she wasn’t sure if she could do it. So I asked if she could get someone who could figure out how to charge me for an extra ball of burrata. She basically ignored the request and said nothing else.

That kinda bugged me. If you don’t know how to do something, fine, but ask someone who does. I’m literally standing there offering to give you more money. I probably would’ve paid up to $8 for this ball of cheese. Make shit happen!

She did ultimately give me extra parm on the side, but she also wrote “extra cheese” on my ticket, and holy hell, they made the pizza look like Zermatt after a snowstorm with the amount of parm they grated over it.

Still would’ve preferred the extra ball of burrata…

They need someone at the register who is a little more sociable and willing to figure shit out for the customer instead of just shutting down when someone makes a slightly unusual request.

I’ll absolutely come again because the pizza is that good, but goddamn, I won’t be making any more complicated requests like “can I pay you for an extra ball of burrata?” Apparently that gets you looked at like you just asked them to commit a war crime.“

“I'm so happy I stopped here for a meal! The chef/owner was very kind and the food tasted homey. I had a veggie combo and it was portioned well with the variety. Their spiced tea was soothing and had a good balance. She was very thoughtful and added a packet of black tea on the side since I had asked for coffee earlier and their machine was down that day. “We often bring out-of-towners here because it's hard to find Laotian food outside of the Bay and Vientian Cafe always delivers. The menu is super extensive and very reasonably priced, so you can try a bunch of new things each time. We always get the nam kao and the lao sausage (which you can also take home frozen). Angel wings are also super addictive.

Food also travels well if you're looking for takeout. One of our favorite spots in the east bay!“

“Soba Ichi is my local place. Quirky, genial staff. The appetizer selection is off the chain. Try the tempura and buckwheat tea. Go early if you want to try the house-made noodles. Service is remarkably fast. Lovely choice of sake wines. You won't find better miso plates anywhere.“

But I was lucky to find this little Chinese vegetarian restaurant in Chinatown. I ate here every day for lunch. “This is a cozy little Thai spot that completely changed my perspective on Thai food. I was never particularly drawn to Thai cuisine before, but this restaurant gave me a genuinely new appreciation for it :-)

My usual order is the Garden rolls, Spicy basil wings, and Pad thai. The Garden rolls are refreshingly simple, there’s no protein competing for attention, so you can actually taste the vegetables themselves. The dipping sauce is restrained rather than overpowering, which makes the whole dish feel nicely balanced.

The spicy basil wings are probably my favorite. The sauce is flavorful and remarkably well balanced, with just the right combination of savory, sweet, and aromatic basil notes.

The pad thai, with both shrimp and tofu, is substantial enough to make a satisfying meal on its own. My one consistent complaint, however, is the seasoning. It tends to be quite heavy-handed, with more sauce than I personally prefer, and I almost always find it too salty. I think a little less sauce and a more generous amount of vegetables would make the dish significantly better.

Overall, though, this has become one of those places I keep coming back to, which says quite a bit considering I never used to be much of a Thai food person.“

“Our go-to spot for Chinese pastries and cakes. Been here forever, and although prices continue to go up more than I would like, we still continue to come.

Fairly convenient spot on the edge of Oakland Chinatown where parking isn't the easiest but plenty of folks double park so you won't be alone if you do. The have most baked good staples but also good cakes if you call ahead.

When in line, watch out for the grandma's that pretend they didn't see you standing there the entire time or the grandpa's sneaking in for a quick cup for coffee/tea.

Their cakes are great; not too sweet, the Asian way. We always try to order ahead but they usually have a couple just in case.“
