The Elysian Bar 2317 Burgundy St, New Orleans Cafe • $$

“According to the hostess, this was originally an old rectory that they renovated and turned into a charming, warm and inviting space with kitschy seating. Upon entering, there is a dining space similar to a front room that leads into a livingroom complete with a fireplace. If you walk down the hallway, there is a curtained dining nook as well as an indoor patio and a lively bar area. They also have a super cute outdoor, open air dining space with plenty of seats. The house made focaccia was very delicious and a must! The oysters were good as they were from the east coast. We really enjoyed the roasted gulf shrimp, but we were not told that the heads would be on nor is it written in the description on the menu; so be prepared. Our main dishes consisted of the chicken under a brick and the daily fish of halibut. Both dishes were delicious! They only have two options for dessert and our chocolate tart did not look like the photo on their website but it was still good. The lavender semifreddo was fire! I couldn't stop eating it!Our waitress did a good job but there were a few things overlooked, like not being cognizant of empty water glasses, letting dishes pile up and not changing out our silverware and plates, however, she was in training, so we didn't say anything. This is definitely a neighborhood gem and not to be missed.”

“We spent some time in the French Quarter and decided to try a couple different spots to find the best sandwich we could. The fried shrimp poboy from Verti Marte blew all of the competition out of the water. High Grace NOLA 733 St Peter, New Orleans Bar • $

“A very nice escape from the Bourbon St madness. This place somehow manages to be a dive bar, and trendy at the same time. It's a friendly, intimate environment, with comfortable lounge furniture tucked away in a few corners, and a beautiful courtyard out back. I know a few other reviews mention the bathrooms, and they are certainly quirky; however, for me it was in more of a made you smile type way. They were extremely dark, only lighted by a pink neon sign. There is no mirror, so don't go in expected to tidy up your appearance. I have to assume these were conscious decisions made by whoever designed/decorated the place. What better way to say we don't care what you look like, and neither should you than to give customers no mirror or light to check their appearance in. There isn't much signage out front, so it'd be easy to miss when the doors are close. They just have a small hanging sign that says something along the lines of "last stop before the tourist traps" which I found to be both clever and true. I wouldn't say the drinks are cheap, but the quality is excellent and they are relatively affordable for what you'd be asked to pay at most any other bar near Bourbon. The bartender was extremely nice, and the drinks were finished quickly. I didn't get to spend nearly as much time here as I would have liked because we had a busy afternoon ahead, but High Grace will certainly top the lists of bars I stop off in next time I'm near the French Quarter.”

Shaya 4213 Magazine St, New Orleans Middle Eastern • $$

“Surprisingly, a fusion that really works is Israeli and Southern food at Shaya. Located along Magazine Street, it's a small restaurant with inviting staff. Booking a reservation on a Monday at noon, our party of four walked in and were served in no time.To feed myself, wife, mother-in-law, and seven-year-old daughter, we ordered the fried chicken hummus, mushroom hummus, pide, and three dips (labneh, beets, and moussaka). We were literally full from noon to the next morning. The pita bread comes out hot unlimited and it's filling!Literally, every dish was great, but I found the sweetness of the date salsa verde and the savory of the aleppo pepper worked well on the fried chicken hummus. (The hummus is so smooth!) My wife and mother-in-law loved the mushroom hummus best.Don't sleep on the drinks. The pomegranate lemon soda was refreshing, Lebanese iced tea sweet, and the mint tea comes with a pitcher of more.If you love good food, go here!”

Takeout Restaurants

“I stopped here on the way home from New Orleans, only 2 miles off I-10, so not really out of the way. We have a long drive, so I selected a steamed char sui bun, Pate Chaud, meat pie, Crawfish pie, coconut macaroons, mochi, and a pineapple bar. Omg, the Crawfish pie! It had so much filling, Crawfish, bamboo shoots, scallions, and seasonings I'm not sure of, but it was very spicy and delicious! I'm trying to find a recipe for it in my Vietnamese cooking group, because Google turned up nothing. The Pate Chaud was delicious too, but not as much filling as I wanted. The coconut macaroons were amazing, and surprisingly made without sweetened condensed milk, but you would never know that except for the ingredient list. The pineapple bar was not too sweet, as it looked, perfect for me. The mochi were delicious, with the all familiar chew. Have two more pies to sample, but I have no doubt they will be delicious too!”

This was kind of the crowning jewel of our trip to New Orleans. A lot of lackluster experiences down there but Manolito truly was a masterpiece. Small bar, historical atmosphere, very traditional cocktails (haven’t seen thrown cocktails in a while), incredible food, and a great bartender. Best bar experience we had while in town. Will definitely make it a point to stop back by. Hope they get the expansion the bartender was describing to us.P.s. - We have had MANY croquettes in our time and the ones here were among the best we’ve ever had.”

I ate half my plate and I had energy to do other activities afterwards. I walked the French Quarter and didn’t feel tired. I finished the rest of my plate for dinner and instead of feeling tired and sleepy, I decided to come here and write this post. Worth every second of my time. Eating vegetables are an exciting experience, especially when you can eat them and feel good.”

“From the moment you step into Chemin à la Mer, you're enveloped in an atmosphere of refined elegance. The restaurant's stunning riverfront location provides breathtaking views of the Mississippi River, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. But the true star of Chemin à la Mer is its exquisite cuisine. The menu features a delightful array of French-inspired dishes, each prepared with meticulous attention to detail and bursting with flavor. My personal favorite was the quiche, which is undoubtedly the best I've ever tasted. The buttery crust, the velvety custard, and the perfectly cooked bacon harmonized in a symphony of textures and flavors that left me speechless. Our server, Mandy, was an absolute delight. Her warm smile, attentive service, and genuine enthusiasm for the restaurant's offerings made us feel welcomed and valued. She expertly guided us through the menu, providing insightful recommendations and ensuring that our every need was met with utmost care. The other breakfast items we sampled were equally impressive. The omelets were fluffy and flavorful, the pancakes were light and airy, and the fresh fruit was impeccably ripe and juicy. Each dish was a testament to the chef's culinary expertise and commitment to using only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients. To top off our exceptional dining experience, our daughter received the utmost attention from Mandy. With her engaging personality and genuine love for children, Mandy made our daughter feel special and entertained throughout our meal. Emeril's 800 Tchoupitoulas St, New Orleans American • $$$$

“I’ve never reviewed my greatest restaurant ever but I will start now. In October my wife and I went to Emeril in New Orleans. Not an easy reservation but worth the time, effort and long trip from our home in Hawaii. Our experience was great. . We knew that there were plans to shut down Emeril for a total redesign from top to bottom. We waited for the exact date to try to get a reservation and luckily secured one. We had absolutely no idea what to expect. The experience we had proved that the “new Emeril “ is the best restaurant we’ve ever been to. I will not describe each dish since it would take up too many words but know that each dish was outstanding. Now I will explain why Emeril is #1 in the eyes of both my wife and myself. Online you will see that there are two Tasting Menus, no a La carte so we were at least prepared for what we were going to eat. We were not prepared for the following total mind bending and culinary experience. When entering Emeril you are greeted with a true Aloha greeting. We sat at the gorgeous bar since we were early and had a Vieux Care our new go to cocktail. The mixologist continued with the Aloha Spirit and made an exceptional Vieux. The bar area was awesome. In a very short time we were greeted by a hostess who escorted us to the brand new dining room. It totally blew our minds. Twenty or less tables with a huge space between them. You almost feel that you are the only guests there. The table we sat at had a large banquette that just added a new dimension to comfort. Large gorgeous pillows supported our backs. Almost directly in front of us was a huge glass enclosed kitchen. This was pure culinary theatre. Almost immediately a chef came to our table and asked us if we would like to see the inside of the kitchen. We didn’t bat an eye and followed him into the most gorgeous well thought out kitchen we’ve ever seen. The chef gave us a brief description of the kitchen, introduced us to the staff and the entire team offered up a special hello. We both felt like the greatest VIP’s. He then showed us to a small table next to us that had two champagne flutes with what he said was a rhubarb juice. Also on a plate was a cube of some unbelievable jellied concoction to showcase the ingredients. Back to our table and the party began. The two tasting menus were explained, one Classic and the other Seasonal. Then the Amuse Bouches started arriving. We expected only one or two. Nope, two sets, one group of cold, the the other warm. Each one was as great as the seven small main dishes. The beauty of the entire experience was that we both left feeling sated, never full. The service was impeccable. Never hovering but always there and totally knowledgeable about every dish and that includes ingredients. The sommelier was the antithesis of what many sommelier’s are. Being Wine Educators and Consultants we really appreciated his knowledge and communication skills as well as his passion towards wine. We had a dedicated service team who I would love to take with us to other great but not perfect restaurants. Jason Burse, the Assistant General Manager made the whole experience into a perfect culinary tour de force. This is why we both feel that Emeril is the Best Restaurant we’ve ever eaten at. Although expensive, it did not break the bank. Can’t wait to return next October.”

“We had an amazing experience ! We got into NOLA later than expected and we’re starving. We had walked around and a lot of places were closing. Liz was outside treated us in the most friendly manner and we got a table right away. My 5 year old was already freaked out by bourbon street and was being stubborn. They made a grilled cheese especially for her and got her feeling better. The food was amazing and the service and hospitality were impeccable! I highly recommend pasta, gumbo, or the sandwiches. It is a bit pricey but your taste buds will thank you and Liz will tell you anything you need to know about visiting the city, and make you feel like family. Oh and did I mention homemade biscuits and to die for French bread?”

The Black Manhattan is excellent — except is was stirred long enough so it was nearly lukewarm when brought to the table. Great flavor, but disappointed at how warm it was. “We were looking for a non-touristy spot after seeing an amazing jazz performance at Preservation Hall. The bartender prior to the performance recommended a few places including The Grapevine. We sat at the bar and were greeting immediately and the bartender Michael was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They start out every meal with individually warmed baguettes and specialty whipped butter, that night it was cracked pepper and truffle. We shared a couple items off of the specials (an artichoke soup that was to die for and a roasted marrow bone topped with Creole style crawfish tails) and then the caprese which may seem simple but was done to perfection with a NOLA flair topped with seafood. The price point was also amazing for both food and alcohol. This was definitely our most favorite eatery experience while in NOLA.”

Her kindness and attentiveness were a true reflection of the restaurant's commitment to providing exceptional service to all its guests. “The service was great. It had a nice bar and a peaceful feeling. We ordered pork belly, pork shoulder, octopus, beet salad, roti bread, spaghetti, and rice. The pork belly was by far the best dish. The pork melted in my mouth and tasted like heaven. The pork shoulder was great. The inside was cooked well and the sauce was okay. The only issue I had with the sauce was that it was too sweet. The octopus was also good because it had a nice and crispy outside and soft juicy inside. Definitely one of their top dishes. The best salad was refreshing and on point. The rice had a nice buttery garlic seasoning and the bread was nice and warm. The spaghetti was a little bit spicy but the flavors and taste were excellent. Deserts- chocolate Pana cotta with a strawberry jelly was brilliant. House made ice cream- blueberry rose, passion fruit, and banana fudge rum. The blueberry rose was my favorite as it had bold flavors and brilliant taste. The others are good but could be better. I definitely recommend going here and will come back!”

“All of my senses were OVERWHELMED with pleasure at Criollo's Jazz Brunch! The service and food was superb Michelin level quality. The live jazz band kept me entertained as I was coursed out. The chef elevated the fried green tomatoes and chicken biscuit to an award winning level. The chicken biscuit was smothered in jalapeño's, scallions and the best rue I have ever tasted so I sent my compliments to the chef. Every delectable bite forced my eyes shut so I could deeply enjoy the freshness, flavor and texture. While I was enjoying coffee the chef sent complimentary Rosemary & Lemon Custard Madeline's. It was an innovative way to approach this classic pastry. My only critique is the custard on top was so good I wanted more. Very light, fresh, and balanced melody of flavors. The consistency was reminiscent of a fusion between a scone and puff pastry. You can tell the French invited fries by how well the fries here complimented every dish. It was such a phenomenal experience, I found myself making reservations for the next day halfway through brunch and I am happy to say the food, service and entertainment are consistently great here. The fancy French atmosphere at Hotel Monteleone was fit for a Queen and the bathroom attendant cleaned the stall prior to each guests use. This is a must try spot in The French Quarter.”

“I read an issue of Southern Living Magazine which listed best barbecue in each of the Southern states. The magazine rated Central City Barbecue in New Orleans as the second best barbecue restaurant in Louisiana. We decided to give it a try. Upon entering the restaurant, we noticed a television screen advertising a Beef Rib Special offered on Weekends for $29. I knew I had to order that. In the Bay Area, beef ribs normally sell for $40-55. When we placed our order to share, I was pleasantly surprised when we were asked what two sides we wanted with the rib. "We get choice of sides?" Never back home. We ended up ordering so much food, adding a three meat platter and a two meat platter, that we took enough leftovers home to provide an additional meal for each of us. The sides were all quite good, although the mac and cheese could have used a touch of salt. All the meats were mouth watering. Fall off the bone pork spareribs, burnt ends, beef brisket, pork belly, and of course the aforementioned beef rib which was huge and perfectly done. As Schwarzengger would say, "WE'll be back!"”

“My friend and I experienced the Chloe for lunch last week 10/12/23 and it was absolutely the best lunch from start to end I have ever had. The goat cheese, pepper and garlic starter is so full of flavor I can’t even describe how happy it made my taste buds. Every bite of food I had was simply perfection. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful in their recommendations. I honestly am planning another weekend trip simply to dine here again. This is a MUST eat while in town. Thank you all for this memorable experience.”

Our server Catherine (who I sensed handles greater responsibilities) was cordial and informative, including her wine selections. We went with classics tonight: ceviche, mofongo, arepas, ropa vieja, and everything was perfect. I love this place so much.”

“The shrimp fried rice was amazing. The sesame chicken sauce was just as good. But I wasn’t a fan of the meat itself. Weird taste. But that’s not my problem. My problem is them not taking debit/credit cards. It’s 2023 I hardly ever carry cash. I was hungry and had my mind set on this place so I had to go to an ATM. Adding extra time and wasting gas. But overall. Everything else was great. I really did enjoy the Rice.”

Asuka Sushi & Hibachi 4600 Washington Ave, New Orleans Japanese • $$

“Best sushi in the city. Now mind you, I grew up in San Francisco and have lived in Los Angeles for over 25 years. I KNOW good Pacific quality sushi. This town blows for sushi. Gulf seafood is amazing! Pacific seafood is laughable. If you, like me, know and lust after something better... this is your answer. Ordered online through their website, tip, payment. Done. Walked in like a boss, said my name and walked out. Perfect pickup experience. I had places to be. They respect that. First time eating here so I danced around on the menu. My lady is diabetic, so rice free rolls are our litmus test. Can't hide behind that rice shield, dawg. They have two rice free rolls. Now I'm a gentleman so I take less than half the rolls we split, just so I can woo her with, "Please! This one is all yours!" I look like a boss. That's a pro tip, guys. She always does that delicate flower move of, "I'm so stuffed! Take the rest!" You know how it goes. Not this time amigo! I had two of six and she's going after that fourth like it's Mardi Gras. The other was a rice paper thing with a cucumber hat and a touch of spice... had it's own special subtly sweet citrus dipping sauce. Insane! Talk about balance. Speaking of... tempura appetizer. Yeah, you already know what it looks and tastes like just by saying those words, right? Nope! A slice of lemon in the dipping sauce. Mind. F'ing. Blown. Seriously, why are you still reading this and not going there right now to eat their food!? I work ten minutes away. I'm seriously making this place a regular weekly lunch thing. If they aren't yelling my name, like Norm in Cheers, as I walk in for lunch, I'm taking that as a personal failure on my part. If you see me there shoveling rolls into my fat face, give me a fist bump and a knowing nod. You're welcome.”

“Our servers, Jesse and Latisha, were wonderful and made us feel very special. They were attentive and warm and welcoming. We had the shrimp Romoulade and the crab appetizers, ,which were excellent. My husbands shrimp creole was also very good. The side of fresh asparagus was perfect my cooked. Unfortunately the Pompano Pnochatrain was a disappointment. It was supposed to be grilled with abutter poached lump crab and a white wine reduction. It was very dry and tough with no sign of any sauce. The baked Alaska was not flamed table side and had minimal signs of having been flambéed in the kitchen. Overall an uneven experience but the evening was definitely saved by our two servers.”

“Pretty good food. I was not wowed by anything, and I definitely think you can get better quality food in a smaller mom&pop environment, but I’d go back for sure.We started with some cocktails that were pretty good, not too crazy. The entree platters were surprisingly big. I did not get to try them but my friends enjoyed. I had the gumbo and Peruvian scallop which were both tasty. Not wow, but good. 8.5/10. They also brought my friend a little dessert for her birthday which was so sweet! A burger was also ordered along with shrimp and grits, a bisque, and halibut I believe. I tried the shrimp and grits and it was GOOD. That stole the show for me. Overall not my favorite place for creole food, but still worth a visit.”

I was dining alone but seated close to two different couples who did not know each other but struck up a conversation due to their proximity and I enjoyed their conversation as one couple was Swedish and the other was from AL but had Swedish roots. it was a really cool place to eat since I would call it fine dining but a comfortable feel. 10/10. “Meril, Meril how I love you This is one of our favorite spots to go for date night or just meeting some friends for dinner and delicious cocktails. Service is always top-notch. We usually have a main waiter and then someone assisting with the table. But don't take that as a stuffy, uppity place to be, it's very casual and nice to have servers taking care of the table all throughout the meals. Apps: we decided to make a meal out of appetizers, and we kind of went overboard. Definitely small plates but big enough to share with leftovers if you do it right. We decided to order appetizers and make that our meal. We chose the Bacon Braised Collard Greens from the daily specials. We also chose Smoked Fish Dip, Crispy Cod Sliders, Deviled Eggs, Korean Fried Chicken Wings and Pad Thai Cauliflower For cocktails we started with English Turn(grapefruit but not sour), Tchoup(cucumber deliciousness) and Albariño(smooth white wine). All so good! It was also our 11 year anniversary and they surprised us with some cotton candy and a sparkler! Perfection!”
