August

August 301 Tchoupitoulas St, New Orleans American • $$$$

“The next time you’re in NO, make a reservation at August! You’ll thank us, I promise. 🤤 FIVE STAR REVIEW ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The meal started out with a “gift from the chef.” A savory leek custard, topped with pumpkin mousse and a sprinkle of sweet & salty crunch, presented in a perfectly carved eggshell. We were given spoon bread as well, which was the lightest, airiest and creamiest corn muffin ever to cross my lips. The sommelier told us that the secret ingredient was sour cream. I guess the secret is out now! 😉 Our sommelier suggested Pinot Noir. Monty chose Belle Glos Las Alturas. Let’s just say that we started shopping for it online immediately after the first taste. It has a fuller body than a typical Pinot Noir, so smooth and juicy. Such a perfect pairing. 🤌🏼 Monty had the pecan-smoked venison tartare with celery root and mountain rose apple. The flavors and textures were out of this world! We combined a few bites of the tartare with a bit of spoon bread. Omg, I’ll say it again: Out. Of. This. World. 💥 I ordered the gnocchi "black and blue" with black truffles, jumbo lump crab and parmesan. Tender, yet slightly firm, with a delicate, pillowy texture, but the truffle took it to a whole ‘nuther level! They gnocchi’d it out of the park with this one. For dinner we shared duck three ways with Bayou Cora grits, foie gras, confit, chestnut mushrooms and cherry bounce. Y’all, I’ve had foie gras, but never before like this. An intensely flavorful silky texture that literally bursts on your tongue. It was absolutely divine. Dessert was hummingbird cake with creole cheesecake, bruleed banana and pineapple ice cream. I just don’t know what to say except the pastry chef knows exactly what she is doing!! This was definitely meal to remember with the love of my life, my favorite dining companion, and my partner in culinary escapades. I love our journey of flavorful adventures, seasoned with spice and a love that mirrors the diversity of a well-crafted menu. Here’s to more delicious chapters in our love story, baby, where every bite is a beautiful reminder of the incredible life we share! Cheers!! 🥂🥂”

“Stayed here from October 10th-14th (2025). Everything was amazing from the staff to the food, and also the Carousel Bar. Be sure to hit the rooftop pool and bar while you are there. Only a block from Bourbon Street and right in the middle of everything. Super easy to find when you are walking the city. The classic rooftop sign is something like 300 feet wide. You can read it from miles away. Has a very 1930s eras feel to it, and the place was immaculate. 10/10”

“First Aunt Tiki’s experience was about 15 years ago. This year my wife let me bring the kids. My 23 year old and I went to see my Cowboys get beat on Christmas Eve. Love this bar. New and fantastic every time I sneak in. Unfortunately after I left, in the rain, slip sliding over to Bourbon St. I eventually slipped my best slip and fractured my fibula, skinned my knees and scabbed up my forehead. I’m paying for it now but it was an epic adventure. Love all of you there but I’m gonna give the old liver a break for a while. 10 out of 10 if you’re cool!”

“February 19th, 2020. Husband's 50th. Wanted a Mardi Gras birthday. He went to 'Bead & Boobs' on Bourbon whilst my short self wandered in this bar mid afternoon. I found a bar stool, kicked back and let Houla introduce me to a lovely spiced rum which became my companion the rest of the evening. The bar itself was clean, bathrooms were kept up and had a slappin playlist pumping. I watched drunken drama come in and out: a young couple saddled up and in mid drink the boyfriend realized he was surrounded by gays so he bolted, a gentleman asked me to babysit his darling Yorkie while he drained his snake, but the best was watching Houla superhero himself over the bar to rescue a very intoxicated woman from a total creep. That was legend! Enjoyed my 7 hour stay. Everyone needs to be here!!”

We never waited for anything. The Hot Crab Claws and Foie Gras Torte for appetizers were divine. I ordered the Duck Cassoulet and my husband had the visiting fish, Sea Bass over Yakamein. “Our first time dining there and they didn’t disappoint! The service was perfect from the moment we walked in. The waiter was at the table to greet us immediately and promptly took our drink order. They started us off with a complimentary meatball served with a basket of garlic bread and they even put a candle in my mother’s as we were celebrating her 87th birthday. We ordered several appetizers including the crab cakes which were the best I’ve ever had. The beef carpaccio was so good we ordered it a second time and the entrees were equally as delicious. After the meal they brought out a red velvet brownie with a candle in it for my mother and the other tables in our seating area joined us in singing happy birthday to her. She was more than thrilled! We ordered a few desserts to share and the tiramisu was fabulous, in fact it was so good we ordered a second! Needless to say this was a spectacular dining experience.”

“I drove AT NIGHT. WITH AN ASTIGMATISM. all the way from DA PARISH to THE CITY for this bread pudding. Took a wrong turn down a one-way like a true local menace, didn’t even put my dentures in, and would absolutely do it again because this bread pudding had me seeing God, my ancestors, and Louis Armstrong all at once. Soft. Sweet. Soaked just right. Illegal in at least three states. Now let’s talk about the REAL MVP: the waitress/bartender with the cute lipstick. Ma’am was serving looks, vibes, and hospitality like she was born behind that bar during Jazz Fest. Sweet as pralines, sharp as a Saints comeback, and made the whole place feel like your favorite cousin’s house—if your cousin knew how to pour a drink and flirt professionally. I am currently eating this bread pudding right next to the establishment like a raccoon with a treasure, specifically to keep my husband from getting a bite. He had 45 whole minutes to get out of bed, put on clothes, and drive me here before closing—and chose violence (sleep). That’s on him. I chose dessert. 10/10. Worth the drive, the risk, the one-way street, the bare gums, and the marital pettiness. New Orleans at its finest.”

The bar was equally wonderful; the Autumn Oracle was especially noteworthy. Service was so loving and friendly; I lingered far longer than necessary just to savor and converse. If the persimmon ice cream is available, GET IT. Meril 424 Girod St, New Orleans New American • $$

“Meril, Meril how I love you This is one of our favorite spots to go for date night or just meeting some friends for dinner and delicious cocktails. Service is always top-notch. We usually have a main waiter and then someone assisting with the table. But don't take that as a stuffy, uppity place to be, it's very casual and nice to have servers taking care of the table all throughout the meals. Apps: we decided to make a meal out of appetizers, and we kind of went overboard. Definitely small plates but big enough to share with leftovers if you do it right. We decided to order appetizers and make that our meal. We chose the Bacon Braised Collard Greens from the daily specials. We also chose Smoked Fish Dip, Crispy Cod Sliders, Deviled Eggs, Korean Fried Chicken Wings and Pad Thai Cauliflower For cocktails we started with English Turn(grapefruit but not sour), Tchoup(cucumber deliciousness) and Albariño(smooth white wine). All so good! It was also our 11 year anniversary and they surprised us with some cotton candy and a sparkler! Perfection!”

“I'm 50+ years old. Have been to countless restaurants in the US and mexico (Cancun 12 times) and the meal I had tonight was the best I've ever had. The cocktails were great. The service was great. Didn't wait long because somehow we were the only 2 people in the place. It was a Tuesday, and we did have early reservations. (4:30) Not complaining cuz I was able to lie to the wife and tell her I booked the entire restaurant for her. (Yes, she knew I was joking) Now, the food was amazing. I already knew what I was ordering but saw the menu of small plates that wasn't on the menu online and decided to try those after eating a couple of the appetizers. Enjoyed every single thing I tried and after the wife tossed in the towel I still went for the Cantonese fried rice. I thought I was done eating until I was told what was in the dessert. Well worth the stomach cramps I now have as I write this review. Happily people start arriving as we were leaving. I strongly suggest to anyone who spent the time to read all my gibberish and go to this restaurant.........................FYI, this is the first time I've ever felt like I needed to write a review.”

Mr. B's Bistro 201 Royal St, New Orleans Cajun/Creole • $$$

“If there were a gold standard for hospitality, it would be JC, our waiter at Mr. B’s Bistro. We brought a group of dear friends along this time—and JC made each of us feel genuinely part of the Mr. B’s family. We’ve been dining here since 1979, and somehow JC has only grown even more remarkable with time. The food, of course, is exquisite. We started with spring rolls and crabcakes, and, naturally, the freshly baked warm French bread with butter. Truffle fries for the table were a decadent prelude to the main event. Several of us savored the filet—perfect with garlic rounds and sautéed spinach. The snapper, as always, was sublime. The gumbo and barbecue shrimp are quintessential New Orleans specialties—so iconic that I even try my hand at the shrimp at home using the recipe from the Mr. B’s Bistro cookbook. Desserts were equally delightful: the bread pudding, salted caramel chocolate cake, and, of course, the classic profiteroles. Cocktails were spot on, and the red wine we chose from their extensive list paired beautifully with the meal. Nestled on Royal Street in the heart of the French Quarter, Mr. B’s Bistro is a treasure, and JC is its beating heart. Fifty years in, and we still can’t imagine going anywhere else. Dining here is less a meal than a tradition—and like a fine red wine—or even their unforgettable barbecue shrimp—JC only gets better with time.”

Hot & Soul 2540 Banks St, New Orleans New American • $$

“We had 2 dishes; Beef Stroganoff and Grilled Pompano and Dessert was the Ginger Cake Cake. Beef Stroganoff: Imagine tender strips of beef, seared until just browned, then simmered in a velvety sauce made from sautéed onions, earthy mushrooms, rich beef stock, and a generous swirl of sour cream. The sauce is silky, slightly tangy, and deeply savory—each bite feels like a cozy hug. Served over a bed of buttered egg noodles (or sometimes rice or mashed potatoes), the dish becomes the perfect balance of textures: the soft noodles soaking up that luscious sauce and the beef adding hearty, satisfying depth. The flavors are familiar yet refined—creamy, savory, and just a little bit indulgent. It’s the kind of dish that fills the room with an inviting aroma and makes you want to sit down, exhale, and enjoy something truly comforting. Grilled Pompano: If you're in the mood for something both light and deeply satisfying, the grilled Pompano with cumin and coriander spice is a must-try. This dish strikes a perfect balance between the delicate sweetness of the pompano and the bold, aromatic kick of the spice rub. The fish is grilled to perfection: slightly smoky on the outside with a tender, juicy interior that practically melts in your mouth. It’s simple, yet sophisticated—a celebration of fresh ingredients and bold, but balanced, flavors. Whether you’re a seafood lover or just looking for something new and exciting, this dish won’t disappoint. A refreshing and light option that still delivers on taste and depth. Highly recommended. Ginger Carrot Cake: This was a beautiful marriage of warm spices and earthy sweetness. Each bite offers a perfect balance of moist, tender crumb and fragrant ginger warmth, complemented by the natural sweetness of carrots. It’s comforting, flavorful, and irresistibly satisfying—an instant favorite for anyone who loves spice-forward desserts. P.S. Ask the Chef for the story about how the Beef Stroganoff got on menu! I love how he honors his mom.”

The bread appetizer and the strawberry & beet salad appetizer as well as the duck confit main course were all excellent.
